The governor of Illinois should say that the state will no longer tolerate ICE and its blatantly illegal activities. They have 24 hours to close up shop and leave the state or face arrest as the criminals they have become.

Jay Kuo's avatar

He sadly wouldn’t win this fight due to the Supremacy Clause. But he can enforce state law against those who violate it. He is already demanding the state to investigate the treatment of children at the assault. Child welfare is traditionally a state function so he will have greater powers here.

Richard Friedman's avatar

That federal law prevails over state law does not authorize a federal agency to go rogue and act like the Gestapo. Let ICE raise that as its defense and let’s see if it passes the straight face test.

Linda Weide's avatar

The governor of Illinois should get a militia together and not allow ICE of any Federal troops in as being Federal overreach of states rights.

I am just back in Germany from Chicago where I carried my passport on me the whole time and told my brown skinned nephews to either carry their passports or their birth certificates. When I read this article by Jay, I was sitting on a bus going to meet a group of friends for a Friday evening celebration of the Day of German Unity and I realized how much trauma I was holding in from having been in Chicago, which Trump is attacking and I began to cry. Just then I got off and saw a group of friends, and I felt better. Here are some of the pieces I wrote while I was in Chicago.

This from all of the immigrants making what we were doing possible which was moving.

https://lindaweide.substack.com/p/view-from-chicago-no-ice-no-fear?r=f0qfn

This from learning more from our contractor about what the people working for us were facing.

https://lindaweide.substack.com/p/view-from-chicago-life-with-ice-is?r=f0qfn

This from reading that Trump was going to "clean our city up."

https://lindaweide.substack.com/p/view-from-chicago-is-chicago-being?r=f0qfn

This from reading that Trump was sending troops into Portland as well.

https://lindaweide.substack.com/p/the-view-from-chicago-we-have-empathy?r=f0qfn

I was sitting in the airport when I first read the Sun Times story about this horrid raid in roughly my part of the city. But, whereas my neighborhood is a wealthy, racially diverse neighborhood, this one just to the south is predominantly Black, but they also had a lot of immigrants placed there when Florida and Texas started sending people north to sanctuary cities. So, I can picture the area and the trauma to the people, particularly the naked ones, being tortured and degraded and made to suffer physically outside at night, where it gets cooler, even if their insides were too hot. We have an evil Nazi running our country, along with his evil Nazi henchmen.

Another boat blown up in the Caribbean. Trump is afraid of Putin, but so brave with small, unarmed boats.

Celeste Myslewski's avatar

There should have been SOMETHING local police could have done when they handcuffed CHILDREN, let alone arrested innocent people in the middle of the night! I'm sick of no one standing up to Trump's insane BS. JB!!!!!!!!!!!

Susan's avatar

Yes....where was Governor Pritzger?

Celeste Myslewski's avatar

I trust that he knows best what he can and can't do, but ICE aren't law enforcement. JB should have had Chicago or state police there saying, " what's going on here?" They left those people totally defenseless! Kicking in their doors in the middle of the night! For nothing! I am fucking sick at the way this country's LEADERS, all of them, are rolling over and playing dead! And there's 80+ yo Bernie Sanders traveling the country, informing people in rallies. The only Dem in our govt with balls, the only one

ira lechner's avatar

This happened without notice in the middle of the night so please don't blame the Gov or the Mayor.

Celeste Myslewski's avatar

But didn't anyone call the police? No one? I find that really hard to believe. And you would expect the police to be on guard for trouble. Those people will have nightmares over this--imagine someone kicking your door in in the middle of the night. These are NOT NORMAL TIMES. It's the police' job to protect us. Right now, no one with any government job is protecting us.

ira lechner's avatar

These folks obviously and reasonably thought the intruders were the police!

Stupid Old White Hippie's avatar

3 days have passed. Where are the mayor, governor and St. Obama?

Susan's avatar

Celeste I totally agree with you. It's sickening.

Stephen Brady's avatar

I’ll just bet he is now deep in discussions to do that. Anyone know if it is possible to email a SCOYUS justice? They need to be called on the evil that they have unleashed.

Erica Wolf's avatar

Where is SCOTUS? Shame on them, above all others. They have sold out our Constitution.

Fitful Musings's avatar

They are incapable of shame. They are belligerently proud of their inhumanity.

Punkette's avatar

With the exception of the three female liberal justices (Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson), who are horrified and distraught, yet have no power. I can imagine what they are feeling now and my heart aches for them.

Fitful Musings's avatar

Yes, thank you. I should have clarified I meant the six "conservative" jerks.

Ben Prickril's avatar

Perhaps “among many others” more accurately describes SCOTUS’ take on the Constitution. I no longer see the justices as actually just. They are now merely another arm of a thoroughly corrupt Executive.

Munchygut's avatar

Some of them bought and paid for.

Fitful Musings's avatar

Six of them, in fact.

Richard's avatar

They have had a decisive hand in moving us towards autocracy. Their hands are covered in the blood of the innocent, and those brutally denied due process.

Kathleen Fernandez's avatar

They are making themselves irrelevant.

Richard's avatar

They will persist, if only as the fig leaf to cover up the blatant corruption which they have facilitated.

Ann Rock's avatar

So much for the supposed “pro-life” SCOTUS. They better get a look at what Pope Leo is saying…

Kevin Falk's avatar

I couldn't believe they called him above the law. But it ain't over, or else "we" would already be gone.

Jacobs-Meadway Roberta's avatar

Six of them have, anyway. And they only need 5 to gut our Constitutional rights so long as the GOP has neither spine nor brains, having left them on the altar to their Supreme Leader.

Gail Dragoo's avatar

We’re not getting any help from them. Only three of them have not sold out.

Deborah Hecht's avatar

It seems to me that the Supreme Court Justices who have allowed Trump’s unfettered unconstitutional behavior, with their shadow docket mockery should be held to account as much as Trump and his blatantly unconstitutional if that glorious day ever comes.

Jay Kuo's avatar

Expand the court. Set term limits.

Riversong Pond's avatar

Call me crazy, but I feel like it’s been well-established that MAGA-bought justices on Roberts Court are not going to protect anyone but themselves.

And, I’m pretty sure that telling Pritzker or local police what THEY should be doing is not effective. The question for us is: What are WE doing to respond to the violence and lawlessness of this regime?

The people of Chicago (like the people of LA and DC before them) will find their own local response to the direct attack on their community.

The rest of us need to focus on our own actions. Show up at a No Kings event on October 18. Organize an event if there isn’t one in your community. Demand your Congresspeople respond. Don’t just call them, show up at their local offices and ask them: What the hell are you doing to stop this? Join your local rapid response team to document ICE abuses and support the families directly affected.

This is an emergency and it’s going to take all of us doing everything we can think of to win back power for the people. Let’s do it!

Looking forward (and hoping I live long enough) to see the US version of the Nuremberg Trials. Even the first five years.

Susan's avatar

I would love to see trump, all the Republicans and scotus hauled away in handcuffs and orange jump suits!

Kate's avatar

It's appalling - but where is the law?

Why aren't police being called to arrest these people? Why aren't they coming if called? Why aren't pro bono lawyers suing these people into oblivion? Is this a tacit admission that rule of law & habeas corpus are already dead in US?

Jay Kuo's avatar

It can be frustrating and sickening to see abuses go unanswered. Lawyers are suing in other cases already. But to sue you need plaintiffs willing to take on the government. Most poor and/or immigrant families don’t have access to legal services and aren’t willing to put themselves at risk in so doing. And direct solicitation of clients isn’t ethical.

It’s why the fascists go after the most vulnerable who have the fewest rights and protections.

Kate's avatar

That's true. I hope that lawyers working in this area are already making contacts with communities at risk so that those wanting help can receive it promptly. Otherwise the law is useless.

Fitful Musings's avatar

LOL, what law? Law has no meaning to mindless thugs.

Hannah B's avatar

The ISP (Illinois State Police) are actually working WITH ICE at Broadview, controlling protestors. Pritzker is in charge of the ISP, he could pull that cooperation at any time. So I'm skeptical that he is any more than a fart in the wind about standing up to ICE. Actions, not more useless talk!

Marshall's avatar

I think you are misreading it - the ISP, if anything, were trying to keep it as peaceful as possible I'd expect to keep ICE from getting what they wanted. I'd reach out to the ISP spokespeople and ask instead of speculate. Pritzer is very not onboard with all this based on his repeated comments on the topic.

GW B's avatar

The thugs that were illegally searching and seizing should have been arrested. If ISP were aiding and abetting in this violation of constitutional rights they should also be arrested, charged and tried. Trying to keep the process of illegal search and seizure as peaceful as possible by contributing to ensuring overwhelming force is presented against unarmed citizens is not a thing, it is just being a participant in a criminal act.

Pritzker dropped the ball. Nobody should have been able to leave the location, which was a crime scene. CPD and State Police with should have surrounded, arrested, taken statements, collected identification details and impounded the helicopter. But nothing, zero, zip, nada. This crime took hours to play out and was on TV, but he didn’t realize he needed to send police to stop the crime in progress??? They played him for a sucker and he filled the role perfectly even after all his big talk for weeks. He’s been fooled once now. If it keeps happening it will be clear which team he is playing for.

Hannah B's avatar

I hope you are right. I really do.

Susan's avatar

Yes but where was the governor when this was happening? Did he come out and condemn these actions?

Ann Panda's avatar

When I taught at a community college during the first regime, I had a student who was ex-military who the faculty nicknamed "Charlie" as in Charles Manson. He was maybe 30 years old, his eyes were completely dead, he hated women, and the other students avoided him. He wrote in one of his group posts that he wished rump would bring back concentration camps because he wanted to be a guard. One day I came in to the room to hear him say, "And that's how you electrocute a puppy." I think of him a lot these days when I hear about ICE and especially about stories about things like that you talked about today, Jay. He would fit right in.

Fitful Musings's avatar

That matches up with what one of the thugs said when confronted with the inhumanity of zip-tied little children rounded up in the dead of night: "fuck those children."

Lisa's avatar

That's the point of indoctrinating people who are wired differently. No empathy, no compassion, no feelings of emotion. Sociopathy, psychopathy, plain evil. They don't see others as human beings. They see them as the reason they themselves are such pieces of shit and that's a major trigger for cruelty. The more innocent, the better for torture.

Susan's avatar

How awful! That guy is pure evil.

Frau Katze's avatar

Yep, he’d be a perfect recruit.

Schmargaret's avatar

Where is the GOP? Are they down for this? What if Dems were doing this?

Fitful Musings's avatar

Of course they're down for this. This is their wet dream coming true. This is who Republicans are, and always have been.

Jacobs-Meadway Roberta's avatar

The ones that would not stand for this were run out of the GOP. See Cheyney as the parade example of a decent actual (not MAGA) conservative who said: no and stood up to Trump. See, also, Kinzinger.

Frau Katze's avatar

They’re making no fuss in Congress.

Chris Batchelor's avatar

There is no GOP anymore, it's just MAGA now.

Stephen Brady's avatar

Psychopaths have a rather prominent role in the Regime.

Punkette's avatar

Nazis, more like. The GQP has morphed into the American Nazi Party.

Karen Bentz's avatar

You're absolutely right. How can they close their eyes to this?

Hannah B's avatar

We can't wait until the 18th No Kings, or for midterms, we need action from leaders NOW. If ICE is doing this right in Chicago against US Citizens, it's time for them to get booted from the city, and from Illinois. Time for Pritzger to call in the National Guard to defend his people against the American Gestapo brutalizing unarmed civilians for no reason at all except these disgusting thugs get off on it. I'm so tired of "strongly worded social media posts" that do NOTHING to actually stop the problem.

It should be clear to everyone by now that rules and rights are not part of the equation here. I've seen the post going around telling people what their rights are with ICE and "what to do" - are these people for real? Do they have any idea how out of touch their advice is? ICE does not care about laws and rights! They could not be any more clear about that - "f*ck them kids". It's clear now that trying to talk with these thugs is pointless, they'll just beat you up and zip tie you anyway, even if you are a CHILD being grabbed from your bed in the middle of the night for no reason at all. The only choices with ICE are to run, barricade yourself somewhere they can't get to you (and a door they can't kick in, because they are obviously happy to do that), or to fight. And people are getting closer to the fight all the time; I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened already.

Jay Kuo's avatar

I understand the impulse to react. It’s horrifying. But we need to be wise to their plan.

Pritzker can’t call in the National Guard against federal forces. Even if that were legal, it’s exactly the response Trump wants: escalation and violence.

The Dems have refused to lend their votes to open the government. Beyond this they don’t actually have much power other than to make their political cases to the public.

We need a massive PUBLIC response. We hold almost no political power so we must deploy public opinion.

GW B's avatar

Jay - Nobody needs to be “activated”!! The municipal and state police just need to do their job when a crime is being committed in their jurisdiction on live TV for hours. The CPD with help from state police should have isolated and closed down this crime scene, identified all suspects, interviewed victims and recorded everything - this is what we pay police to do - detain criminals and interview victims and refer to justice. This is not a new concept. Where were they? Not to be seen. Embarrassing and a dereliction of duty to protect Chicagoans. When police stand down in a situation like this, there is a specific name for these kinds of attacks.

Since CPD didn’t do it, how will the criminals, invading peoples’ homes without cause while deliberately masking their identities, be identified now? Strongly worded letters to DHS? Please, pretty please let us know which masked men were criming in our city that day? Left to citizens to try to request data through their civil actions and pay attorneys to file requests for what CPD should already have collected?

We have put so many dollars into enhancing the facilities and equipment police have access to since 9/11. Shouldn’t that equipment have been on the scene to control exits from the neighborhood, while police preserved and recorded the scene of the crimes? Where was it? Parked in a beautiful new public safety building that cost millions of dollars protected from even the slightest dust in a massive attached garage?

The only reason people are trying to come up with their own actions is because all the services we pay for are standing down while crimes are being committed in front of our faces and our leaders shrug shoulders and say that they believe that they strongly object in their hearts while refusing to actually use the resources we have bought them to stop these crimes. It will be great to get the 911 reporting to find out how many hundreds of calls were made to 911 services during this assault and completely ignored by CPD. If that’s the case, any good Russian immigrant would tell you, that would be the methodology of a pogrom!

Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose father was an actual National Socialist Party of Germany member in the 1940s, warned after Jan 6, 2021 that we had just witnessed a kristallnach in America. He probably wouldn’t have imagined that four and a half years later we would be watching even more similar scenes!

Melinda strauss's avatar

I agree. This is a crack in the fascist regime’s takeover. We need to peacefully protest and inform others to spread the word about the cruelty that has and is spreading.

DLJohnson's avatar

Crystalline truth - they're counting on present reactions to buy time.

VT_Maid's avatar

They're also counting on a violent reaction as a pretext for escalating their violence.

Hannah B's avatar

They don't need a pretext, they just need us to line up before opening fire. Then they'll lie and tell whatever story they want, and the bought and paid-for media will assiduously promote their lies, just like they are doing now. I honestly worry that is what's going to happen on the 18th to some degree.

Melinda strauss's avatar

No violence on our side or we’re sure to lose democracy. They are rabid for martial law. Peaceful protests are essential. Thank you all for staying educated and engaged 💕🙏

Denise Donaldson's avatar

EXACTLY, DL. They're correctly assuming that the non-MAGA part of the country will, at most, simply keep filing lawsuits and marching with signs. We play by the rules, while the orange tyrant and his private army terrorize citizens and commit endless crimes.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Thank you for telling it like it is, Hannah. Wet noodles to a gun fight.

Apple just disappeared its ICE-related App. Budget is renting trucks to ICE, etc. More US companies assaulting US citizens. General Strike, now.

I had downloaded ICEblock on my iPhone, but now it’s gone. I had used it about a month ago to alert neighbors that ICE was in my church’s parking lot.

Jay Kuo's avatar

Apple removed it from the App Store under pressure from the DOJ. Cowards.

Kimberlyanne's avatar

These thugs are NOT "agents" or "officers" or "military"! News media needs to stop calling them that. This is Trumps personal army illegally killing, abusing & kidnapping people & children.

Celeste Myslewski's avatar

Blatantly illegal and unconstitutional. So what? There is nothing or no one that can or will stop Trump. We are going over the cliff. I heard an interesting comment from a DC journalist when he was asked about troops in DC. TWICE he said people are getting used to seeing them around, it's not a big deal anymore. Hey guy, that's EXACTLY Trumps plan--get them used to a militarized state. He knows everyone WILL fall in line eventually. Welcome to the Trump Reich.

Lance Khrome's avatar

This is taking tRump's "[military] training in American cities..." to its literal conclusion, with all the accoutrements of an IDF commando raid upon a Gaza apartment complex. The writer Garrett Graff also

called the Chicago assault a "Kavanaugh raid", and likening it — and the climate that spawned it — to the "Palmer raids" from 1917-21, which up to this point were the worst systematic transgressions against Constitutional and human rights in the course of modern US history.

tRump, Noem, and Homan are reviving the Palmer raids, and adding their own twists to them as amply described by Jay here, with the most ominous factor being the Scotus endorsement of "guilty of being Brown until proven innocent", turning the Bill of Rights on its head.

Read more here on Graff's commentary:

Sharon C Storm's avatar

This raid is a clear violation of those people’s 4th Amendment rights. All of the thugs participating in that violation should be arrested and held for assault and battery.

Are there lawyers who would be willing to work pro bono to help these citizens and non citizens alike whose rights to just live their lives to get to a better place have been attacked? This should be a shame on the entire regime, but since they are toadies to the felon, they don’t understand “shame”.
