I’m off today in honor of Juneteenth, which falls on a weekend this year. For me, the commemoration gives time to reflect on how things once were in this country for so many enslaved people. It reminds me how far we have come from that point, and how far we have yet to go. Justice and liberation are a long, twin roads we must continue to walk.
I’ll be back with one piece on Monday before heading on my annual summer vacation. This year we’re visiting the Amalfi Coast in Italy then spending a week sailing around Sicily with friends. I’ll be the chef below decks again.
Have a great weekend!

Happy Juneteenth from Galveston, Texas where it all started. Maj. Gen Gordon Granger promulgated the 3rd General Order freeing the enslaved people here on the 19th of June. I have the great honor to portray General Granger in the Juneteenth events here - Let Freedom Ring!
Enjoy your trip! Safe travels.
