Given the volatility of the Middle East, that this administration's right hand doesn't know what their left hand is doing is grossly unsettling. I have nightmares of DJT and Hegseth nuking Tehran in their mutual, confused incompetence.
I just saw on CNN a little thing that makes me even more concerned. Turkiye reports that NATO shot down an Iranian missile headed for its airspace. Turkiye is a member of NATO. Article 5, anyone?
It was probably headed for Incirlik AFB, which the US uses for fighter strikes, and is still one of the few places US planes can land after the rest of Europe has shut their bases. The other military bases in eastern Turkiye (Diyarbakir, for example) only have small runways, so I think the thing was aimed at Incirlik.
My daughter lives in DC, right near the Navy Yards, which isn't far from Capitol Hill. I think Tehran have better luck going after Trump if they bombed the Mar-a-Lardo golf course.
And I live between your daughter and the WH and wonder how Russian intelligence (reported to be aiding Iran in every way - guess the “bromance” of the “dear leaders” is over) is advising of the whereabouts of Trump and other key personnel. I think DC is in danger and so far no one seems to be noting it. I hope we will be safe. 9/11 was pure luck for DC. Drones weren’t prevalent. Tell your daughter to consider evac routes.
To the best of my understanding. Iran does not have long range weapons (meaning the ability to strike the US proper). That's the reason they are striking bases within the region.
What do you think the odds are that there’s a ship out there in international waters smuggling a hold full of these drones? They have about a 1500K range - a ship is well out to sea at that range to hit Mar a Lardo or DC
The really pathetic trump statement/lament is concerning "second, or third choices" for new Iranian leadership having "already been killed"...the irony is that his erstwhile partner-in-war crimes, Netanyahu, actually is stage-managing the IAF "decapitation" sorties, and it's the Israelis systematically removing power centers as quickly as their intelligence locates their hideouts. trump is left looking stoopid and bereft of any meaningful fallback strategies as to who remains in Iran as viable and significant interlocutors to discuss cease-fire conditions and everything beyond that point.
Maybe trump needs to sit down with Bibi and beg him to spare any remaining Iranian political, military, or religious figures capable of negotiations moving forward.
I am using your comment to pose a question, because you used the word “receipts”. I have noticed a tendency on the part of both columnists and commenters to suddenly favor certain words or phrases. Now receipts is in fashion, was “cosplay” and also POV. Why does this happen? And “receipts is used in many different contexts that aren’t traditional uses. Can someone explain what the term means now?
Hi Pam. I believe it means having the documents to prove ownership as in the paper receipt for your purchase. Nowadays that may be digital but still conveys chain of title as is produced for a property transfer. And words matter especially when recorded and replayed.
English is changing very quickly these days. Yes, "Having /bringing the receipts" means having proof of something somebody did or said. Marco Rubio said one thing two days ago, and the exact opposite today, and we have recordings of both statements. The reporter "had the receipts" on Rubio's previous statement, so he couldn't deny it.
The "cos" in "cosplay" is short for "costume," and I think "play" was added because the person referred to is dressing up in the costume of something but isn't actually one of those things. Kristi Noem likes to dress up like an ICE agent with the bulletproof vest and a hat saying "ICE" on it, but she's definitely not an ICE agent (just an idiot.) She's just playing a role that she think makes her look tough. Anybody who shoots a dog because it was acting up is not tough.
Years ago I read a Stephen J Gould article about a textbook describing a particular dinosaur as being the size of a particular breed of terrier (I don't remember which). Within a short time, almost every textbook was using the same size comparison. Whether it is lazy textbook writing, or lazy reporting, it is a common human trait.
The term "receipts" as is used here means you can prove what is said, you have paperwork, or video/audio proving it is true. it has been a political term for as long as I can remember.
Cosplay is more recent, roughly from the 90's, it refers to dressing in a costume to play act as whatever identity one is assuming, such as, but not limited to, a Manga or Anime character. There are entire conventions made up of such attendees, the most famous being San Diego's annual Comic-con. Look it up it is quite fun.
POV is point of View and has been around for quite a while it is used very often in conjunction with video games. It means how you see things from your location, or political stance.
So to sum up, as new generations bring video game terms into common use, for example NPC which means non player character, someone who is a background character, that adds to the story but is not the main character, or discover old terms like receipts, they enter popular usage.
Thanks, to all who replied. I guess I sounded like an ignorant dope but honestly I’m 78 and very well educated and I know what receipts and cosplay mean, anybody can look it up. I just was struck by how words are used in a trendy way. I’ve been reading the news and political news for years, decades maybe and suddenly everybody’s using cosplay and suddenly everybody’s using receipts. So I didn’t say it very well but that’s what I was really commenting on, that it’s very trendy now to use those words. I’m grumpy at the world in general right now so I guess I’m grumpy about people using trendy phrases.
What an administration-everyone chosen for their loyalty to the orange freak , not for their integrity or intelligence.
Thank god we have Substack writers and others who write about what is really happening .The mainstream media is still protecting him -As someone said before “The mainstream media is in a self-induced coma. The only thing, that will bring them out of it, is a democrat president. Then, they will miraculously awaken and cover him very critically.”
Thom Tillis has not only found his voice, but he's also finally found a spine and a couple of other things. too... I'm so looking forward to Roy Cooper being our next senator from North Carolina!
Finally, a congresscritter with the balls to step up and tell it like it is, let some of the fire and passion and outrage that so many of us have spill into full view. I'm not a Tillis fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I do appreciate his calling out the incompetent and corrupt Noem like that, even if belatedly (and politically invulnerable because of his announced retirement).
May _all_ congresscritters, including _every_ Republican except Tillis and with the possible exceptions of Raskin, Warren, Goldman, Moskowitz, and a handful of others, take a huge object lesson from Tillis's "performance review" of Noem, find their own balls/ovaries, and step into the friggin' fight with the same fire and start throwing heavy blows.
Republicans don't ever speak their mind or go against the approved talking points unless they are retiring or dying. Tillis was probably just as outraged at many other things that were happening, but never spoke up. He and other Republicans who act like this are the reason we're in this mess. They have had the power all along to stop the worst of Trump's behavior, but didn't. They could have been heroes, but chose to support a deranged dictator instead.
Tillis co-sponsored the SAVE Act and was proud of doing so. He told me that in an email a couple weeks ago, before it headed for a vote in the Senate. He's not all that great. He just happens to train dogs.
Exactly - how often has he - or any other Rethuglican congress critter - voted against Trump’s agenda. This jerk voted to end the health insurance subsidies. To deny children and low income adults FOOD and HEALTHCARE!! He is a scumbag. That was just performative
Back in the day when more attention was paid to dependents and those who registered w/ Embassy, my mom and I were evac overland from Amman to Beirut, put up in hotel for Suez Crisis. They sent the 6th Fleet. July 1958 UAR was forming, King of Iraq killed [Jordan's King Hussein's cousin] we convoyed overland Amman to Haifa, ship to Genoa, train to Rome. School went on as per usual. 1967 Six Day War was half way to Amman but halted in Athens to meet my evacuating Mom - once my dad ev'ed we ended up in Kabul which used to be really cool. Dec 1970 whatever # Pak-Indian war, bombing Islamabad, led 3 busloads w/ Red Cross painted on top and Indian govt informed, 90 dependents to Kabul, which in those days was safer. Have pic taken from middle of Attock bridge being strafed by Indian fighter jet. Was in lead bus to guide the driver who did not speak Farsi Or know where US Embassy was . But having lived there, I had been thru Khyber Pass x times and could bazaar haggle in Farsi. My dad was in war zone in Dacca as East Pakistan broke away with India's help. In those three cases we had civilian contractors and the odd tourist who knew the drill. Think my mom had another evac I missed. Dept.of State HAS known how to do this for centuries !! This seat of the pants garbage by failed congresscritters etc is pure incompetence !
In The Exorcist (1973), the dialogue regarding the number of demons possessing Regan is a brief exchange between Father Karras and Father Merrin.
Karras initially believes there are multiple, saying "So far, I'd say there seem to be three"* to which Merrin replies "There is only one."
So far this year the United States seems to have been plagued by multiple emergencies, including the threat of Iran developing nuclear weapons, an invasion by a Venezuelan drug cartel, an invasion over an "open border," law enforcement loss of control of violent American cities, an "emergency" trade imbalance that needed to be rectified with tariffs, and rampant voter fraud. I may have missed a few.
In fact, there are not multiple national emergencies occurring in the United States right now.
Thank you Jay. Watched the overly bloated manosphere of stupidity Hegseth this am at the Pentagon’s press conference. As he said. “We are accelerating, not decelerating … More bombers and more fighters are arriving just today,” he told reporters, adding that the US would be using a “nearly unlimited” supply of 226kg (500lb), 453kg (1,000lb) and 900kg (2,000lb) bombs.
The US and Israel, he said, would sow “death and destruction from the sky, all day long”.
Good lord, this blowhard Fox couch potato needs to find a bar stool and just park it.
Also the Comer’s House committee that Waltz and all out of Minnesota testifying on alleged misuse of Federal Funds in Minnesota. What a crap show daily that there are the likes of Nancy Mays who can’t get over questioning people on “what is a woman” everytime her pie-hole has a microphone in front of it.
As for Rubio there was “no plan” in getting American out of the Middle East. Those Americans weren’t even a thought process. They were seen as sacrificial lambs to slaughter, not even a blip on the radar by any of these cretins in this regime. Have nothing to say about Johnson, Tuberville, Cotton or Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) who btw has no idea how to say the word “war” or even has the ability to correctly identify where our service members are dying. Mullin is confused are we in a “conflict” with Iran or Iraq. For him God only knows.. what an asshat.
Noem, well just give her a new outfit an oversized hat to cover up all the plastic surgery, the Botox injections and hair extensions and another $140+ Million to have her in front of a camera to continue to lie about all the “domestic terrorists” dying at the hands of ICE agents who have a millisecond of training on anything legal when it comes to immigration or having an American citizen die at their hands. Seems Tillis is coming into his own while not running again for office. Guess that’s when anyone in the MAGA cult is able to get enough calcium to create a spine.
Honestly there are many endless nights of lack of sleep as to who has the ability to push the buttons to unleash nuclear weapons between all of these inept, incompetent, imbeciles ..
This whole thing smells like a bunch of supposed adults playing war games with no thought to real people's lives. Hundreds of innocent children obliterated while in school? It's just a blip on a screen to them. It's disgusting.
Of course, he would toe the line while he still wanted to get re-elected, but now that he's retiring, he can say what he wanted to all along but didn't. Republicans don't go against Trump unless they're retiring or dying, and don't care what gets destroyed in the process.
Even in his blasting of Noem, he still called it Biden’s disastrous border policy. Completely ignoring the fact they voted against the bipartisan border bill trump had them vote down so he could keep it as a campaign issue.
Wow senator Tillis! Way to go!!! It's so satisfying to hear someone especially a republican articulate things we've all been thinking about Noem. Her incompetence is glaring. Send her to Iran. She's often decked out in military attire anyway. She's a puppy murderer and that I won't forget.
Despite all of Trump's attempts to distract us, even starting a war with Iran, once we find Epstein's videotapes, we will inevitably find one with The Donald raping a young girl. Do ya' think that will finally get him impeached????
Before GOP Senators like Tillis are given too much credit, remember they all voted for Trump’s inept administrators. You’re supposed to understand these people ahead of letting them loose in any department, much less Secretary of State or DHS. I’m glad one seems to have awakened, but I’ll reserve any better judgement of him until I see actual action.
According to Tillis, "what we've seen is a disaster under your leadership." I would use the term "leadership" quite loosely here. There is no leadership anywhere in this fascist regime. None of them, DonOld in particular, could lead a Boy Scout Troop out of the woods following a path.
The senate is going to vote to approve of Trumps war. I wonder how many Democrats will take a knee and vote with Republicans. I don't think anyone will win the Profiles in Courage award this year.
The winner is Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa. Hopefully, when his term is up he will lose the primary to a candidate who actually pays attention to current events.
Given the volatility of the Middle East, that this administration's right hand doesn't know what their left hand is doing is grossly unsettling. I have nightmares of DJT and Hegseth nuking Tehran in their mutual, confused incompetence.

They do that, and DC as well as Jerusalem will be parking lots - don’t know who’ll do it, but SOMEONE WILL
Do you think they will also take out Mar-A-Lago as well?
My daughter lives in DC, right near the Navy Yards, which isn't far from Capitol Hill. I think Tehran have better luck going after Trump if they bombed the Mar-a-Lardo golf course.

Scary thought that rings true. Nightmare scenarios “Unknown unknowns” and Rumsfeld said back in the day. At least he had actual thoughts.
See my reply above to Betsy L. Russia and others are aiding Iran. And it takes just a few backpack-wearing angry people to do great damage.
Trump and his sycophants time and time again seem to be intent on violating any norm, any law and any constitutional limits.
...and are too stupid to understand why those rules exist.
The President said pretty much that the war he started is too complicated for him……
He told the truth? Wow!
Amazing, right? I should save the date of that broadcast to remind myself that miracles never cease.
Yes, he’ll just deny he ever said it, in typical Orwellian fashion, say exactly the opposite!

Add to that the religious insanity that this is THE war, being said by multiple military leaders
Same :-(
I do enjoy digesting this drama with the written word. Occasional video receipts are helpful too. You strike a nice balance, Jay. Thank you as always.

I think the date stamps are also important.
But don't they actually have the video? Or is that not sufficiently new & cool?
One kind of receipt in this context.
Years ago I read a Stephen J Gould article about a textbook describing a particular dinosaur as being the size of a particular breed of terrier (I don't remember which). Yeah, too bad Tillis did not find it before he announced his retirement.

And, geez, thanks a lot Tillis -- why did you not show up until the harm was done ! ?
He actually voted for her confirmation.

Probably not. Fake news.
Remember we can’t believe what our eyes see.
It was "a misspoke." 🤔 Methinks it might've been a miseducation.
Haha! That remark was nails on the chalkboard!
That quote from the Princess Bride has come to me so often lately!! ie, 'exonerated'. Thanks for referencing one of the best quotes ever!
