Jay, you have provided the best overview and explanation of this reprehensible and illegal act by Trump and his 'bend the knee' minions. Thanks so much. I'm sharing far and wide!
Yes. I had heard from Olga Lautman and Julie Roginsky that they are deporting people who were seeking asylum in the US, and there is no proof of them being gangsters. We should be getting upset, because Trump and Bondi and the rest are goose stepping their way to Nazi horrors with a place in the history books that Trump won't want, but won't be around to stop, unless he aims to be hated like Hitler. I call the El Salvadoran prisons, Nazi death camp prisons because they say people who go in don't come out alive.
We should do what we did during COVID - at 7pm every single night we should bang our pots and pans loudly into the evening for at least 15 minutes ....
Banging pots and pans was a tactic used by local Catholics during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, when British troops were in the area. It was very effective because then any IRA fugitives in the area had warning to escape.
So, if ICE arrive in a particular neighborhood then banging pots and pans is a very effective way of warning people who may be afraid of deportation, to go and hide.
A fellow protester was doing that at a TeslaTakedown my hubby and I attended, and all that piercing racket did for me was make me want to grab that pot and throw it far, far away. The hundreds of people driving by us, honking and waving in support, were already quite well aware we were there. PLEASE DON'T BANG ON POTS AT PROTESTS, FOLKS
Great idea! The ICE Gestapo must stop. These are crimes against humanity. The Orange Hitler and all who heeded his orders will pay their crimes to the ICC.
Hitler didn’t either. And so do autocrats like Syrian Bashir Al-Assad, North Korean Kim Jung-Un. It’s obvious why they don’t, and it won’t matter when the time comes.
"The lack of specific information about each individual actually highlights the risk they pose."
This tortured logic recalls the words of General John DeWitt in early 1942, arguing for the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans despite the fact that there had been no incidents of espionage on the West Coast: "The fact that nothing has happened so far is more or less . . . ominous," he said, "in that I feel that in view of the fact that we have had no sporadic attempts at sabotage that there is a control being exercised and when we have it it will be on a mass basis." (quoted in Stetson Conn, et al, Guarding the United States and Its Outposts (1962), p. 121.
Same overall vibe, but the legal basis is actually different -- several thousand Japanese, German, and Italian nationals were rounded up right after the U.S. entered the war in December 1941 under the Alien Enemies Act (the one the Trump Administration is invoking in this case). Significantly, most of those internees were afforded some measure of due process and the ability to contest their internment, unlike what appears to be happening now.
DeWitt here, a few months later, was calling for the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans, both citizens and non-citizens, which was authorized under Executive Order 9066 in mid-February, 1942.
Just for the record, the immigrants who come illegally and use fake soc security numbers will pay in and never be able to get a dime out. They are supporting your benefits and you begrudge them even civil treatment.
How are undocumented workers getting Social Security when they don’t have a Social Security number? In addition, one must be retired or disabled or have a child whose parent died, or be able to receive 50% as a spouse in order to collect Social Security..
From the Cato Institute which is at least as conservative, if not more so, than you identify yourself as being.
"Undocumented immigrants in the United States generally have a lower crime rate compared to native-born Americans, a trend observed since at least the 19th century. Various theories suggest that this may be due to selection effects and the comparison group effect, where immigrants are less crime-prone than the general population."
Deporting every undocumented immigrant would result in a nano-fraction reduction in rapes and murders. The vast majority of crimes including rape and murder, are committed by American-born criminals. Perhaps you believe they, also, should be "deported" to foreign prisons.
Quite a few of those deported without due process have been documented as having *legal* residence documents (green cards) and at least one had a court order that he not be deported to his country of origin because he was credibly at risk of torture and murder if returned.
But they’re not even checking to see if their citizens or anything! they’re just throwing them in a van then a plane and sending them to El Salvador, which is illegal as fuck, come on! I mean, if you want to imprison them because they’re illegal (which still seems harsh to me) do it here until they’re ready to be deported
In part, Venezuelan President("radical socialist, Trump-hater"etc.) balks at bootleg, rando, air-drops of 'migrant thugs'(lol), & convenient, doc-free 'hell-hole' in faltering 'state' in transit for deposit, why not? says 47.
You have to be physically present in the USA to request asylum. That is the process.
“To obtain asylum through the affirmative asylum process you must be physically present in the United States. You may apply for asylum regardless of how you arrived in the United States or your current immigration status.”
From the USCIS website. Barrios was waiting for the hearing he was entitled to when they kidnapped him. It’s also not deportation when you send them to a prison camp in a random country that has nothing to do with them; that’s human trafficking. If you’re such a stickler for laws, why are you okay with the government breaking them? By all means, change asylum law if you can get the votes, amend the bloody constitution if that’s what it takes. But don’t just ignore the law when it’s inconvenient to your agenda.
What do you not understand in this quote "You may apply for asylum regardless of how you arrived in the United States or your current immigration status.” Note that it states "apply for asylum", not that asylum is guaranteed to be granted. Due process in an immigration court is required to determine whether or not asylum is granted.
"If a person arrives on US soil and claims asylum, does the US have to deal with their claim under international law?
Yes. Not only does the US have an international legal obligation to do so, based on the requirement of complying with the object and purpose of the 1951 Refugee Convention, and implementing legal obligations in good faith, it has an obligation to do so under its own domestic law.
The executive order cannot displace domestic legal obligations. So those who, with great difficulty, manage to reach the US will have to have their asylum claims examined. The duty not to return a person to a state where they may face torture or other serious harms is absolute under the UN’s Convention Against Torture. The US has signed and ratified this convention."
It’s not immigrants that are the no. 1 killer of US kids. Its Americans w/guns. I’ve heard that if you can’t tell propaganda from facts about Soc. Sec. you’re not worth arguing with. Try facts. G’night!
Cruelty is the point. Steve Bannon said that if some innocent gardeners get swept up in the deportations, he's fine with that. Cuz shit happens, just not to him.
Oh, I would absolutely LOVE to see ol' "looks-like-a-drunkard-on-a-two-week-bender" Steve Bannon get swept up in a "rendition" of unhoused folk. He could protest all he wants but that wouldn't make a bit of difference, would it? He fits the profile, so away he goes.....but hey, shit happens, right Stevie?
I paid plenty of attention. You didn't pay attention to the rest of the conversation. But thanks for weighing in. Comments like yours are what make social media such a joy.
That phrase jumped out to me as well. I have been "mom" to a generationally feral cat for 16+ years, and even now, he trusts me and has mellowed somewhat with age, the feral Instinct remains strong at his core.
thanks for writing this. The description of the man - the gay barber - who was sent to the jail and *called for his mother* kept me up last night. Reading this today gave me a little bit of hope that the admin will be held accountable. It reminds me of George Floyd and my friend's protest sign that said "When he called out for his mama he summoned all the mamas!"
Thank you, Jay! As always, yours is the most complete and clear report and analysis of this horrific miscarriage of justice. Calling my congresspeople (again) to demand they introduce legislation to stop these renditions even though I realize this is more of a judicial issue.
Fascist Regimes are supported by pillars like Homan and The Bondo Bimbo and all the utterly unqualified MAGAts in his cabinet. It is up to the people of the Tarnished States of America to rise up and say in one voice - tRump is wrong! On April 5th large protests are being planned all over the Country. Look on the link below to find one near you. And please attach the link to every post you make for the next 2 weeks. We have to stand up, stare the fascists in the eyes, and shout them down. And keep it peaceful, Folks! tRump is looking for any opportunity to invoke Martial Law.
I just don't understand how so many [republicans] in Congress continue to support this travesty of an administration. It astounds me how many in a position of power fold so easily and advance the abject cruelty of Trump/Musk actions and rhetoric. It sicken me.....
You have to understand the history here. The "sane" Republicans had been hemorrhaging voters since well before George Bush, because they had nothing to offer for Main Street Americans. Their corporate sponsors didn't want them to do what Americans wanted, such as universal health care. So they had to look for new voters. The proto-MAGA (then called Tea Party) came to the rescue. Now the Rs are stuck doing their bidding.
Unfortunately, now the Democrats are caught in a similar quandry, the Republicans just there a few years earlier. That's why the Dems lost the trifecta, even Harris, who on her own was quite popular, and why we get people like Schumer.
I have (soon to be HAD) a friend who before the election made the proclamation that "all of her immigrant friends supported frump and his policies". Now I'm not sure how many immigrant friends she has or where they are from but I soooo badly want to ask her if they still support these "policies" knowing that at any time they can be detained for weeks in inhumane conditions even if they are here legally. I can't ask her though because she's made so many clueless and ignorant posts that I just can't take her anymore.
Clearly what is happening is inhumane and horrible.... and honestly this is what I predicted when he bragged about all the people he was going to deport. There was no way this was going to be anything but a shit show.
Yea it seems irony is lost on these people. I did assume some of these immigrant friends were now citizens and could vote. And I do know there were big pockets of immigrant populations that did support his policies even if they couldn't vote. It's all about believing all the lies he was spewing
There are thousands of Venezuelans in South Florida.Rubio will be the scapegoat although he has no one to blame but himself…
“Venezuelan Republicans in South Florida aren’t happy with the president, either. Gustavo Garagorry, head of the Venezuelan American Republican Club of Miami-Dade and an ardent supporter of Trump since 2015, said a lot of people are extremely worried, including him.”
‘I’m really embarrassed by what’s happening to Venezuelans, that’s my community that’s being affected,” he said. “More than one is on the verge of a heart attack over this.’
Wonder if Garagorry will now withdraw his support for the Donvict. Nahhh....probably not. Unless he or a close relative is rendered.
It also appears that, per the linked article, these Florida Repub representatives only care about illegal, brutal deportations of Venezuelans. Everybody else is fair game, apparently. Hypocrites!
I have a former colleague who is both an immigrant and an immigration attorney who was cheering Trump's victory. Hope she doesn't end up on a plane to nowhere with a bunch of her clients.
Not to defend, but is it possible being an immigrant and having immigrant friends she feels compelled to loudly proclaim her support of the Dumpster so she’ll be left alone? 🤷♀️
She is not an immigrant. She was a person who proclaimed to not have voted for him in the past 2 elections (which I do not believe) but turned her support to him this time becasue she felt Harris was running on "nothing except being a black woman". Yea, don't get me started on that. But when questioned about policies and such she made that statement about all her immigrant friends. But I don't think she would feel the need to proclaim anything to be left alone (even for them) because she has spewed a lot of praise for him.
What’s the government’s intention regarding the people illegally being held in El Salvador, if they had their way? Even if everything else were kosher, what’s the detainees’ status? How does the govt justify removing them to El Salvador rather than to Venezuela?
Venezuela refused to take them and El Salvador is getting paid for agreeing to imprison these people. They won't kill the goose that laid he golden egg. These people will likely languish there forever or until Trump is gone.
The president of El Salvador already stated that he will keep them for a minimum of one year. Of course, that's yet another unconstitutional thing: giving somebody a prison term without a criminal conviction is clearly unconstitutional. Deportation detention is supposed to end the minute the person can actually be deported.
Every single person who assists in this despicable Trump-ordered deportation process IN ANY WAY should ultimately be arrested and charged with crimes against humanity as specified by The Geneva Convention.
You seem to have gone out of your way to not name the DOJ lawyer who was excoriated by Judge Boasberg for their lack of candor to the court. Why not provide the name? If it’s damage to reputation that is supposed to be the “stick” that helps keep lawyers in line, don’t we all deserve to know the name?
Jay, you have provided the best overview and explanation of this reprehensible and illegal act by Trump and his 'bend the knee' minions. Thanks so much. I'm sharing far and wide!
Yes. I had heard from Olga Lautman and Julie Roginsky that they are deporting people who were seeking asylum in the US, and there is no proof of them being gangsters. And that will do as much good as screaming into the void would do. Resist. Persist.
You would be surprised at the power of banging pots and pans.
That’s a sensible strategy, not just performative.
Also a good release for mental health!

The hundreds of people driving by us, honking and waving in support, were already quite well aware we were there. PLEASE DON'T BANG ON POTS AT PROTESTS, FOLKS
From your windows is one thing, in your ears is another. Gotcha.

Nope. We didn’t sign on cuz we needed to protect GWB and Dick Cheney
The United States does not recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and is not a member of the ICC.
Hitler didn’t either. And so do autocrats like Syrian Bashir Al-Assad, North Korean Kim Jung-Un. It’s obvious why they don’t, and it won’t matter when the time comes.
GWB, and Cheney who arguably was even worse than Trump, got away with war crimes.
One crime doesn’t nullify the other or even comparable.
And we are in peacetime, not in some trumped up reasons of “invasion” to invoke the Alien Enemies Act.
It sounds like a plan!
Yes !!! Great idea. Loud and clear for all to hear !!
Funny that both instances use the same law to round up the (mostly) innocent.
Same overall vibe, but the legal basis is actually different -- several thousand Japanese, German, and Italian nationals were rounded up right after the U.S. entered the war in December 1941 under the Alien Enemies Act (the one the Trump Administration is invoking in this case). At least we were at war then
I am still questioning how the illegal alien act can be invoked when we are not at war
Congress only has the power to declare war.
Of course the FFOTUS have never let facts or law interfere with their nefarious decisions
George Takei speaks often of this “logic” that was a no-win argument for his community
Note what difference, John W?
Yes, that's pretty clear.
They are still entitled to a hearing.
Just for the record, the immigrants who come illegally and use fake soc security numbers will pay in and never be able to get a dime out. They are supporting your benefits and you begrudge them even civil treatment.
That's got nothing to do with what we're discussing, which is the lack of due process -- which even applies under the Alien Enemies Act.
How are undocumented workers getting Social Security when they don’t have a Social Security number? In addition, one must be retired or disabled or have a child whose parent died, or be able to receive 50% as a spouse in order to collect Social Security..
Yeah, 🙄 we shouldn’t be doing it just because FDR did it. 2 wrong don’t make a right.
From the Cato Institute which is at least as conservative, if not more so, than you identify yourself as being.

No human is illegal.
I'm ok with deporting real criminals who receive due process but not nazi gestapo behavior towards innocent people ...
They are the Nazi goose steppers.
If they were Venezuelans why El Salvador?
Rhetorical question

Exactly! That is the AMERICAN way.
It should be, but immigration law is unlike criminal law here, and very much stacked against the accused.
Yes!
No, it applies to absolutely anyone within the United States who has been charged with a crime.
Entering the US illegally is not a criminal offense. Entering the US to request asylum is legal.
You have to be physically present in the USA to request asylum. That is the process.

From a comment from Heather Cox Richardson’s commenters: “Trump is an auto pen”
tRump is a noisy frontman for a cabal of fascists and theofascists who intend to impose the Republic of Gilead on the USA.

That was exactly my thought as well! And he complained about Biden using auto pen. What an idiot he is and he’s a coward on top of it.
Every accusation is an admission. It’s laughable (if it weren’t so dangerous).
I just don't understand how so many [republicans] in Congress continue to support this travesty of an administration. It astounds me how many in a position of power fold so easily and advance the abject cruelty of Trump/Musk actions and rhetoric. It sicken me.....
Because they want to keep their cushy jobs and not get primaried.
To the elected: Do the right thing and show you represent your constituents.
Else you get primaried either way.
And don’t bet on trump and co. They’re bankrupt morally and someday financially when they pay to reBuild Back Better our government with the grift.
