Well, the "travel ban" did push off the front pages all the Elno argie-bargie over the — can't bring myself to type its full name — "OBBB", so there's that. As you noted, Jay, the Orange Felon has held the ban in reserve pending a "strategic release", and here it is.
BTW, in many overseas precincts, the US has taken on the mantle of "shithole country", thanks to non-stop enshittification of daily life for virtually all of us here, foreign or native.
This is not about immigration, this is about racism.
Trump has loudly broadcasted his racism since, at least, the 80s. It’s past time to be honest that everyone who ever voted for him did so because of the racism, not in spite of.
I was recently told that a second vote for Trump didn’t mean that person was political.
If your vote is an endorsement of a candidate and you know that candidate is an actual criminal, but votes your way then his way IS your way. His morals and standards are yours. Period.
How about wearing this "Keep the immigrants, deport the racists" t-shirt in front of bigots? 🤔 👇
Some might argue that the difference between "white nationalism" and "white supremacy" is merely semantic and not worth quibbling over.
I disagree. The former soft-pedals and to an extent euphemizes the virulent racism at the core of white nationalism. It also attempts to wrap unequivocal racism in the flag, as if to somehow legitimize and present as "patriotic" an abhorrent desire to dominate all people of color.
Following closely on that, as we have seen countless times, is segregation (and, often, persecution) on the basis of religion in the name of Christianity, and lifestyle/sexuality. We are also already seeing the extremists going after intellectuals, political dissidents, activists, and even past and present political opponents.
Tell it like it is. White "nationalism" is hate based and xenophobic. It is blatantly racist. It is white supremacy.
Mmm. Strong denial impulses at work. FWIW, Merriam-Webster sets "racialism" and "racism" as synonyms (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racialism). Would be interested to hear your brother's thoughts about that. Am guessing they'd be something about woke dictionaries, leftist appropriation of the language, etc., etc.
That's interesting. I never looked up the words. I know that he knows that "racism" is something to which I am completely opposed, and I know that he thinks "racialism" sounds more scholarly and therefore more acceptable. Thanks for that (surprising, to me) information.
A lot also depends on reaction here to this. If we don't register this for what it is and don't protest because of other distractions and fears, then it will be said that we are okay with this. This is on us to a great extent, allowing it to pass, to come to pass. We cannot go on this way. The transformation happening, trying to happen, is formidable. And the picture keeps coming into focus more every day.
This is why the No Kings Day protests are so very important. Google No Kings and on the site they provide resources. Ways to find a protest near you. Training in your rights vis a vis these protests - by ACLU. And places for you to sign up to assist. It is all hands on deck or we are going to be living in a totalitarian dictatorship.
Taco dumpster is just making an already untenable situation worse by implementing a travel ban ! Nobody now wants to come to the States , in fact many places now are telling their citizens not to travel to the USA and tourism is being stifled because of it ! Dumpster is doing this with the help of its regime ! His regime with the aid of PeeWee German is disappearing people who are law abiding citizens who most are either American citizens or hold visas but because they are not of the Aryan race are held in detention centre's with no due process or trafficked to another country ! I don't know what idiot Taco is going to do when he has ostracized all trading countries and corporations who will no longer want to deal with such an un trustworthy person ! Enjoy your new America people !
I'm traveling at the end of Oct. All the flights I was going to book are already canceled due to Delta ramping up for "decreased travel" even within the US (my flights were all domestic). So this all is definitely having an affect on tourism already. Truly horrible.
I was on Facebook with people in Norway during trump's last term and they were told by their government not to travel to the US because they were not guaranteed their safety. It's worse now.
The key point here is that Trump is giving a pass to countries who have actually sent criminals that harm us and our allies, because they're rich enough to have bought his loyalty.
Out of curiosity, do any of these newly banned countries have Olympic athletes, coaches, etc., that may have been planning to come to the US for that? Not that I think anyone should attend the Olympics (or other major events) while Taco is in office.
I read about talk of moving the 2026 World Cup because the players don't want to come here and I hope they do the same with the Olympics. While the hosting the Olympics is a much bigger undertaking than the WC, I feel if it were decided now there would still be plenty of time to move it. I don't understand why anyone, atheletes or not, would want to take the chance. Because even if the atheletes are exempt and allowed in without issue, what about their families? You know damn well they won't allow all these families in.
Moving the Olympics is unlikely to happen. It didn't happen in Moscow 1980 after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Instead, those Olympics were boycotted by large parts of the world.
True. I had forgotten about that to be honest. I think a boycott by large parts of the world is a good also.
However I do feel this is different. For one, the SU did not ban people from going there, it was a boycott due to acts of war. Now we are dealing with self induced boycotts of whole countries and have already seen many instances of people getting to their US destination and being sent back for literally no reason. We are alienating people on purpose, we are sending the message "These people are not welcome here". Also there was less than a year between the invasion of Afghanistan and the start of the Olympics. Definitley not enough time to move them to another country. We have 3 years, plenty of time.
My son is in Special Olympics. It’s a four year cycle and if he keeps winning his qualifier competitions, he’ll be invited to represent Canada internationally. I hope it’s not in the states as I do not feel safe at all bringing my family stateside even though we’re white.
I think it's time both the World Cup and Olympics take action. Just move the events now- no way all the atheletes and their families come over here without issue. I mean what if someone packs too many clothes or they have tattoos, or heaven forbid both (like the woman from Australia going to Hawaii). The only thing TACO understands is money, take away the profits and prestige from hosting these events is something that I feel would get to him. He doesn't care about it all being racist and inhumane, it's all about the money and status
We've been shitholifying for a lot longer than Trump. I'd say, at least since the 1970s, when blue-collar wages started eroding and the social safety net started getting dismantled. And the result is that today we have large homeless encampments that are worse than the shantytowns and favelans in many poor (but respect-deserving) nations.
I like your line about the realization that hate and fear-mongering don’t make our lives better. It’s absolutely true, and until progressives can develop messaging that counters that hate and fear mongering narrative, we’re left to the capriciousness of the courts and the whims of a right that is terrified to dissent to hold back the tides of this hate, ironically preventing us from being “great.” And those tides are washing over us pretty damn relentlessly these days.
My personal wish is that Dems would choose and stick with messaging and policies that support people, all people. No wish washy worry about woke or whatever the GOP wrongly makes it about, coopts. All people deserve rights and respect. That's where progress has taken us over 250 years, with more to do. Stay on that path, unabashedly, fully.
My personal wish is similar. The Democrats need to stop trying to be Republican lite (under the guise of "Moderation") and unabashedly pursue policies for the people. Economically, socially, civil rights, privacy rights.
And, much as I personally like most of those policies, right now we can't afford to focus too much on climate change.
Yes exactly!! This is what I wrote in my last post. Dems need to be completely unapologetic and bold with their platform for 2026 and beyond. No more restraint to appease moderate billionaire institutional donors. Effective policies to lift the working class. Anything else is just noise.
One other noteworthy thing: Trump deadnamed the country Myanmar as "Burma". Unfortunately, the map in this article (apparently from ABC) repeats this error.
I have remarked on Trump's erratic behavior in the past. If Biden had acted in this fashion, people would have clamored for a strait jacket and chemical restraints to protect the President from self harm. Trump gets away with it because, in the spectrum of his lunacy, this is considered mild compared to some of his more outrageous behavior. The emperor has no clothes but the Rs are doing all they can to distract people from this realization and to convince them not to believe their lying eyes!
The first travel ban got me of my ass to finally apply for citizenship after living in the US for several decades. That's the only good thing that came out of the first Trump administration for me personally. In the big picture this is really an interesting experiment how an open und free society reacts to getting all their rights and achievements removed. Books will be written about this. Personally I would rather not be part of this experiment but there we are.
I am currently living in red-state Kentucky. I say "red state", but the registered voters here are actually almost a 50/50 split between Dems and Repubs. One reason for that is KY's Southern and Slavery history. Dems were largely the slaveholders; Repubs were the party of Lincoln.
When the parties flipped identification, Dems became the liberals and Repubs, the Conservatives. A lot of Democrats in KY today are black and urban. The Repubs are in the rural parts. But what is common in both parties here today is a strong religious sense. AND, a real hatred of any government interference.
The enormously popular Governor here is Andy Beshear, who is a Democrat. He has been able to bridge the divides with his own personality. A person here votes for a Mitch McConnell and various unappealing Congresspeople, but also votes for Andy., who makes no secret of the fact that his fundamental moral faith is what guides him.
Thank you. None of this surprises me. But I’m thinking DT is not the one orchestrating this. He’s not mentally capable even if it does align perfectly with his bigotry. So who is actually pulling the strings here?
I never want to become numb to the O-turd's attempts to distract us from the reprehensible actions of his administration to grotesquely destroy our democracy and constitution. I am going to look forward the televised "Nuremberg" trials Rubio, Noem, Hedgseth, Nut-lick, Miller, Vought, Vance and the rest of the clown car in his cabinet. Of course, the O-turd will walk away, unscathed, thanks to SCOTUS. Reform needs to be the roadmap of the Dems when the House, Senate, and Whitehouse return to normalcy. Let's play the long game, guys, and stay focused - resistance in any way we can.
Well, the "travel ban" did push off the front pages all the Elno argie-bargie over the — can't bring myself to type its full name — "OBBB", so there's that. As you noted, Jay, the Orange Felon has held the ban in reserve pending a "strategic release", and here it is.

My brother (MAGA) actually said that it's not "racism". It's "racialism". Semantics matter.

Strange word. Did he make it up?
Yes
Yup, we're in our very own little "shithole" country now, thanks to 47 and his minions. :-(

This is what a wife abusing spouse does. Cut all ties to the outside to abuse the other person.
WOW! Amazing analogy!
He will just keep stealing from his own citizens. And hit up the Saudis if he needs a little more.

It's always, and all about, $$$$$$$$$ for the orange sadist.
Since when does Trump care about Jewish people?
Since when does Trump care about anybody except himself?
Good question 🤔

But not their families

Travel ban is making news, even in mainstream media
This really is a distraction.
Too lazy to look up, however, are some of these South African countries?
If so coincidence?
TACO needs to be 86’ed
Soon , real soon
Any version is ok
We also need to know where TACO was these past few days ?
Who was in charge
Keep on speaking out. I am in my own way.
I can actually see some results.
I also don’t discriminate as to whom I contact
I am trying to be the fingernails on the chalkboard. Of which the recent generations would have no clue what I am talking about.
Squeaky wheel.
The infighting is ramping up among the republicans.
Keep up the great work Jay!
Africa is a continent. South Africa is a country. None of these countries are in southern Africa.
Burma is in SE Asia and is primarily a Buddhist country. Also happens to be under a brutal military dictatorship.

The only thing trump understands is a firm NO. Notice that he stopped talking about Canada and Greenland?
Trump and his ilk are doing everything they can to turn America into a “shithole country.” And succeeding very well.
There's going to be a lot more unhoused people, for one, with prices going up and people losing jobs.
Unfortunately true
Giving our science industry, research and people, to China and others is but one example. What a waste and loss.
Andy Borowitz does an excellent job of highlighting a “shithole” country in this morning’s post. Usually a humorist, today he is rock solid correct.

I noticed that too. My city is home to a large population of ethnic Chins from Myanmar. Most fled due to being persecuted for practicing Christianity.
