I’m off today for my birthday, and because I finally got back to NYC and to sleep around 4am, I decided not to write anything substantive.
I did, however, want to share a conversation I just had with MA in my head, which happens more frequently than I want to admit now that she’s gone. It went like this:
Ma: WHY YOU SO TIRED?
Jay: Working hard, I guess.
Ma: ON YOUR BIRTHDAY?!
Jay: Just my substack.
Ma: WHA?
Jay: My sub—my newsletter. It’s my main work nowadays.
Ma: YOU GET PAY?
Jay: Sort of. I have voluntary paid subscribers.
Ma: VOLUNTEER?
Jay: Yeah. Well, nearly everyone gets it for free, but some choose to support me.
Ma: …
Jay: …
Ma: MAYBE TRUSTING PEOPLE TOO MUCH.
If you’d like to help me prove the Ma in my head wrong, consider taking out a paid subscription to this newsletter. If enough of you do it, I can continue to provide my daily work without having to go take a legal gig to cover my expenses and rent in NYC. Which Ma says is TOO HIGH, MY GAD.
Jay
Happy Birthday. I'm glad you were born!
This is adorable! What a lovely tribute to your Ma! (And happy birthday too).
