Goodness, Jay. I honestly don’t know how you keep the top of your head from flying off. How much more skullduggery can you bear to uncover. But I’m eternally thankful that you’re on the job. Local races matter so much more than people realize.

This is insane and also extremely frightening.

Shows just how power hungry these idiots (republican’ts) (and their “core”) are!!!!

This is fascism at work. The corrupted GOP can't concede when they lose- when they repeatedly say an election has been stolen it's because they know how it's done...and they do it. This situation is a blatant attempt to overthrow a fair election.

I feel bad for all North Carolina residents and how blatantly they are being disenfranchised. I hope things do eventually go the way of Wisconsin & people get fed up enough to truly make progress.

In Wisconsin, it took a highly organized and very strategic Democratic party, headed by Ben Wikler and supported by many volunteers from all around the country, several years to lay the necessary groundwork to break the Rs' stranglehold on political power in the state. Finally, with the election of Janet Protasiewicz to the state supreme court in 2023 and the subsequent redistricting to eliminate the severe gerrymandering that had been in place, that death grip was broken. Happily, though Harris was not elected last November, state and local election results pretty closely reflected the actual Rep-Dem proportions (WI is a purple state), and the state speaker's control over the legislature was likewise broken.

In North Carolina, some good energy is happening in Mecklenburg County, where Dean Kromer is starting to put some of the pieces together to resist and break down the R power grab. As was the case in WI, it's going to be a long, uphill fight. Kromer and the MeckDems need all the support the rest of us can provide them.

The fight continues in WI with another Supreme Court election in April. Hopefully the turnout resembles the Protasiewicz election and not the November one.

It's definitely not gonna changxe in NC very quickly, I don't think they are quite at the bottom yet of R overreach. It's definitely going to take a lot of work & it seems to be only more recently that the Democratic party has found some more energy through hard work of people like Anderson Clayton.

To me a true purple state is the goal. I don't like Dems gerrymandering anymore than Rs, but I also don't support Ds getting rid of all gerrymandering when Rs are still going full steam ahead. There has to be parity somewhere.

More news that I am calling NOIR News: Now Outrage Into Resistance...

Indivisible.org is a good place to take action, if you are fortunate enough to be materially comfortable and have time and energy to do pro-democracy work. All hands on deck!

Pray to whatever god you believe in that the RIGHT THING is done at this point. We don't need another "sh*t show".

Unfortunately… we already have “another s***show!!

They have to cheat to win. And they have no scruples about it.

Thank you, Jay, for lifting into the light this horrible mess we are in here in NC and for reporting in such fulsome detail. (Numbers-wise, we are pretty much divided into thirds, D, R, I, with Independents having the most registered voters. You would never know it by Dem representation in the House.)

In these states where the gop want full control, they still accomplish nothing for their citizens. The rich in those states get richer and the middle class and poor get poorer. A moment for democrates to seize and shine a bright light…democrates still haven’t learned that you don’t bring a knife to a gunfight. If the other guy isn’t recusing why would you recuse???

Just more Republican rhetoric and lies to justify their actions and the people that voted for it!

This is fucking wrong on so many levels.......

How sad if it is to have to resort to cheating to win. If you have to cheat to win, then you must really not be confident of winning.

Do you think they care?

No, but it shows they know without cheating, they can’t win.

The basic problem here is not the horrifying attack on democracy, but the elected judiciary. In a few states, like Massachusetts, the governor appoints judges, who are the subject to confirmation (in the Bay State by an elected Govnerror’s Council that does nothing else). Judges are truly non-partisan; who appointed the judge is rarely brought up.

Expand full comment

I would agree, but we have appointed judiciary in the federal system and it isn’t going much better for us, sadly.

In Florida, the governor(DeSantis) appoints Supreme Court Justices with special LL(Leonard Leo) advisement. The Judicial Nominating Committee then rubber-stamps DeSantis’ appointees.

Hopeful this doesn't become the new "blueprint " in other republican states. However it would not surprise me in the least.

This is why it’s so important to draw attention to this and stop it from happening. Other states are watching closely!

The gerrymandering in NC, WI, and other swing states are part of nationwide efforts by an organization called ALEC and project REDMAP. This is why I’d like Wikler to head the Dem party. He knows how to get out of this horrible situation.

I read your thorough, thought-provoking and enraging article. The details in the case are appalling. Where are the democratic lawyers? Our causes are aligned. Somewhere along the line they've committed fraud. There is no other way for us to get here. Integrity is important but only if elections are secure and both sides play by the rules. All of the Trump campaign signs in my neck of the woods remain up even though they are supposed to be taken down 10 days after an election. Frankly it's rude to see the guys mug shot on a campaign sign every day. There is also the big one with the "REVENGE TOUR" on the local highway. I'm in a blue state so I can only imagine. The facts and data are muddled under a heavy disinformation campaign so we must lawyer up. They haven't brainwashed enough of us yet. Gather data, facts and the Constitution and snacks for the family because they need to prove elections are secure by looking at the data with us. Election Truth Alliance - let's make them talk about it.

The Democratic lawyers are on the case, but there’s not much you can accomplish if the state Supreme Court makes up the rules as it goes along and Trump lawyers block the cases in the federal system…

Expand full comment

Are there no signs of something that breaks a federal law? As you can probably tell I’m not a lawyer but the stench of fraud is so palpable and the we’ve hit a wall imagery sometimes means start digging under it or build s ladder at least in cartoons. I used to be an optimist.
