It’s hard to believe that it’s been a full year since I launched The Status Kuo as a paid service. I decided at time to make this newsletter supported completely by voluntary contributions, so that those who could not afford to pay could still receive all of my content. After all, what’s most important is that as many readers are armed with knowledge, clear in the danger that confronts us, and unified in our resolve.
I was overwhelmed at the outpouring of support on December 9, a year ago. And I was grateful that, even though the next twelve months bore a lot of personal tragedy and heartbreak for me, this community had my back, and with your help I was strong enough to keep writing, to keep going.
My mission is now expanded as a result! I’ve branched into video reels, which I now publish on Instagram and TikTok several times a week, to reach younger audiences and voters. It is through this community’s support that I’m able to do this work full time, and even to pay a proofreader and video editor for their time and work!
A year ago, at the advice of my wise sister Mimi, I shared a Buddhist principle called dana, meaning generosity and support. It operates on the idea of reciprocity. With my newsletter, each day, I pledged my best efforts to provide a clear understanding of the issues, the challenges, and the state of our political and legal system. In exchange, I invited readers to reciprocate a dana reflecting the support, guidance and clarity that you feel you have received.
Today, I come again with my offer of best efforts throughout 2024, and I hope that most of you who pledged a year ago re-up today. It comprises a huge percent of my annual base of support, and it would mean so much to me if you reaffirmed your pledge. And if you’re inclined to help me start Year 2 off by upgrading to a paid subscription, you can do so here:
A small housekeeping matter: If your card was canceled or expired this year, you’ll receive a notice from Substack asking for a new card number. And don’t forget that your charge may appear as a Substack or Stripe charge, so that you don’t dispute it with your bank!
Lastly, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This community gives me great purpose, and I absolutely love doing my work here on its behalf. I’ll be back on tomorrow with Xeets and Giggles for the week, and I look forward to our journey together in what will be a critical, historic year for our Republic and for democracy at home and around the world.
Jay
Thank you for all your work, Jay. You have shown over and over that your cool, collected takes are the way to go, instead of the incendiary takes we get from most sources these days. You are a valued part of my day, typically arriving in my notifications right when my work day is getting crazy, and it's a helpful thing to read and reset my own energy before going back in to the rest of the day.
I literally look forward to your daily posts. I think you threw me a lifeline this year. May the Universe be kind to you and your beloveds.
