Joe Biden and Kamala Harris warned us about everything the trump regime is doing and the dire consequences to follow. Corp media found it unimportant and uninteresting and didn't bother covering their prescient warnings with serious and in depth analysis. So here we are.
The sad thing is that in the lead-up to the election, the conventional wisdom was that Harris and Walz were being hyperbolic, since it was ludicrous to believe that the Convicted Felon would ever do something so destructive.
Agree, Becky. What was more important and interesting? What Trump would do about hot button issues like restoring the names of bases for Civil War generals and the ten trans-women playing basketball or boxing. But I fault the electorate as much as the media for the results.
Actually, we were warned by the Rs themselves when Project 2025 was published in April 2023. It’s not too late to read it and see how closely the plan is being followed and what’s coming next.
The lunatic firmly believes that tariff revenue is a "winning" substitute for income-tax revenue, and he's convinced himself that he can bully the ROW into not retaliating, that overseas buyers of US goods AND services will pay ANY price for them, meaning that any future tariff hikes on US exports will keep revenue streams invariant, with NO loss of demand on higher prices to end-users/consumers abroad...and we here in Murka will indeed sit back and reap a new "Golden Age" as tariff revenue rolls in, "the likes of which nobody has ever seen before!". MAGA!!
But ultimately, as the US cascades into recessionary stagflation, tRump and his propagandists will of course blame Biden, the"Deep State", "radical lunatic Democrat Party", and all else for the self-inflicted FUBAR...let's see if the MAGA proles buy it as they see the shite times rolling in.
They may try, but people in the center of our political spectrum who decide elections and are looking for someone to blame won’t need to look to the past.
Josh Marshall argues that these punishing and self-harming tRump tariffs have the seeds for their own destruction, as they clearly are economically unsustainable and will collapse under their own weight, which then leaves the remaining question: how tRump orchestrates the inevitable climbdown without admitting he spectacularly fucked up and it's 100% on him...Marshall reckons he'll fold, then zig and zag to that end, as a lifetime of practices can demonstrate.
Congress still could force a correction off its own bat, with the Senate already showing "bipartisan" pushback, but so far, zero House support for tariff rollbacks, and tRump will just veto the fuck out of any challenge to his decrees. So, yeah, no Congress say.
Yup, that's why all the pearl clutching blame game analysis that took place inside/outside toward the Dem Party was moot to me, at some point the Citizen Electorate is to blame for IGNORING EASY TO FIND FACTS ON EVERY AWFUL MAGA CANDIDATE, be it for President or a Local School Board, and welcoming con-artists, criminals, white supremacists in ANY POSITION of Govt. power in any form.
Like Senator Booker stated in his fantastic 25:04 rebuke of 'Rump & Musk, a CALL TO ACTION to the American People and all those who serve it's aspirations, with what should be unbreakable ideals, and these ideals "ARE NOT LEFT OR RIGHT, BUT RIGHT OR WRONG!"
As U.S. Citizen's WE HAVE A DUTY, to VOTE with PROPER INFORMATION on what every Candidate & Proposition stands for and to VOTE, PERIOD. We simply DON'T!! And everyday the Billionaire Cucks for ‘Rump, the MAGA Media, MAGA Podcast grifters, MAGA Congress, MAGA State Reps, MAGA State Supreme Courts are doing "death by a thousand cuts" attacks on voters that are the most vulnerable to the MAGA Project 2025 which 'Rump 100% has been following for 10 Weeks now.
The American people FAILED this historic, multi-generational affecting Nov. '24 election. I don't want to hear about purity tests, or protest votes, or Harris Walz didn't do this or that MAGA podcast, or "bothsides" bullshit...'RUMP HAS HAD A SHIT STAIN RECORD BOTH AS A HUMAN & "businessman" OF FAILURE HIS WHOLE LIFE, ESPECIALLY AS A "public servant" SINCE 2016 THROUGH JAN 6TH 2021 AND BEYOND.
THE TWICE IMPEACHED, SIX TIME FED. INDICTED, GUILTY CHARGED 34-0 CONVICTED FELON FOR 2016 ELECTION BRIBERY, GUILTY CHARGED RAPIST/SEXUAL ASSAULTER OF WOMEN, RACIST HIS ENTIRE LIFE, DIVIDER OF AMERICANS AND ADMIRER OF DICK-TATORS PAST & PRESENT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED TO RUN, OR IF SO, LOST SO BAD BAD, LIKE MONDALE VS REAGAN 1980 TRUE LANDSLIDE, THAT THE SHAME ALONE WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM A DROP DEAD HEART ATTACK AT HIS MAR-A-LAGO GOLF COURSE.
*and yes, the Disinfo Weapon of unregulated social media along with the complicit bought and paid for print, digital, legacy & cable news media have 100% contributed to this purely American Democracy issue of voter Apathy and voter purposeful abuse of a POWERFUL GIFT NOT USED! One that was made to give the PEOPLE a 248 year tool to FIGHT tyrants like 'Rump, and Robber Baron's like Musk that rise to test our Democracy, our Constitution, OUR VOTE every generation.
Eventually, the American Citizens, the ones that CONTINUE TO FOLLOW A SOCIOPATHIC MADMAN AND HIS DESTRUCTIVE TARIFF TRUMP TAX, HIS LOVE FOR GLOBAL ENEMY RUSSIA & DICK-TATOR PUTIN, AND HIS ANTI-WOMEN, ANTI-BLACK & POC, ANTI-IMMIGRANT (unless you are Ivana or Melania euro-mail order brides) beliefs he has had his entire life - they have to break from his Cult or we will be DONE as a Democratic Republic until we have another Revolution...which is funny since this would be perfect Revolution 2.0 timing with the 250th b-day of this American Ideal upcoming and all (with the WORST POTUS ever in the Oval Office).
It's this some new definition of the word incompetent, 1984 style? Not only did Biden skilfully extricate the US economy from trumps disastrous handling of the COVID pandemic, he left it as one of the strongest economies in the world. If that's incompetence I'd hate to see what you'd call Trump's re-trashing of of the economy.
I’M WONDERING: Maybe this is Trump‘s big fat gift (grift) to Putin - and of course Trump would expect a kickback.
Russia could buy things from, say, China without any tariffs - and then Putin would raise the price a little bit and have the goods transported to the United States and because they were now Russian goods, they’d bypass all tariffs.
Since Trump didn’t put any tariffs on Russia, this would only raise prices a little for us and most Americans wouldn’t notice - and it would be a huge windfall for Russia as ALL foreign goods would be forced to go through Putin’s hands for a price.
This would put Russia in a position to take a cut of all our imports and Putin (in a likely partnership with Trump) will become hugely wealthy like Elon - in their new role as “a paid middleman.”
My guess is that not including Russia on the tariff list is an attempt to gain leverage against Putin in negotiations over what's going to happen with Ukraine: how much longer the killing will go on, who gets to keep which parts of the country, who gets to plunder which parts of the natural resources.
It will be no skin off the orange criminal's ass if Russia goes untariffed as long as he gets two things: (1) to broker some sort of "peace deal" that he can put his name on, thereby getting to paint himself as some sort of international hero and maybe even get the Nobel Peace Prize he's coveted for so long; and (2) to insert himself as middleman, for personal financial gain, of course, in the transfer of natural resources from Ukraine to the US. What Ukrainians want for themselves and their own country is of course irrelevant to the orange criminal.
More devious diversionary tactics, like circumventing laws, the Constitution,
and everything else being done. When cheating and lying are core tenets of someone's life, it is the way they experience everything - and that is essentially
The cowardly lying complicit Congressional Republicans once again demonstrate how Hitler accumulated power and went on to bring millions of willing accomplices with him as he started a world war that murdered millions and destroyed countries.
Power. Ego. Money. Joy or even indifference in watching others suffer. That is today's GOP and the motivators for the corporate capitulators. Disgusting.
Is it really all just a revenge tour? America didn’t let him into the elite club so he’s literally destroying the country? Because I really do not understand why he would very deliberate just destroy absolutely everything (or why anyone supports him except pure ignorance and arrogance). Obviously fear Putin will poison his coke, but it’s more than that, isn’t it? He just really, really hates us all?
I find it unhelpful to try and figure out Trump’s precise motives. It’s often best to chalk it all up to malignant narcissism, as that covers most of his behavior.
He’s EVIL. It’s really that simple. Everyone should STOP trying to make it more complicated. If more people really accepted that, then many more people would start to grasp it.
It’s unbelievable that history can repeat itself so exactly within 100 years! Sad what that says about humanity. Evolution truly lost it’s way.
I agree 100%, Christy!! There are lots of reasons why; but dark and evil is what it all boils down to. It doesn't make sense; and we should be glad that we can't get inside his brain. It is obviously a very scary place.
If we enter the discussion under the premise that he has been pursuing politics since his visit to Russia back in the 2000s every move makes sense
Destroy the US and make Russia great again. A weak US is a strong Russia because we are the only ones with the resources (natural and otherwise) to oppose them indefinitely
Two points. Ten year revenue projections are worthless political propaganda. And even Trump’s projection for near term tariff revenue is optimistic at best. Second, the constitution lodges tariff power in Congress, not the president. The “emergency” fig leaf is unconstitutional as is the delegation. Someone needs to challenge Trump on this in court as soon as possible. Today would be a good time.
I just want to scream! Millions of people have had no real need to understand this stuff in the past - their economy includes working, getting a paycheck, paying bills and (hopefully) enjoying life. It’s not because they’re dumb, but because government has worked for them in the past. Then there’s the millions who simply believe the lies and crazy reasoning - there needs to be a huge, simple response to show lies vs reality to both these kinds of people (I’m ok to admit I’m in the first group - raising five kids as a young widow working two jobs - I didn’t pay attention - to my now dismay. I now read and follow writers like Jay to understand.
Sorry for the rant but I did say I wanted to scream.
Neita! You are amazing! You are not alone in "doing what you needed to do" and what we all "thought we were supposed to be doing"; which for me sadly did NOT include the understanding we all now have of what was being planned and carried out for decades!!!!! I too think " I should have known, seen, etc."...But both my adult kids say...um...you did what you were supposed to be doing..and had faith that government would do THEIR part. Bless you and your kids!
No apologies needed, Neita, but please, with all your passion, join us in the fight. Find an April 5th event near you, and show up. Maybe with your kids! We’re organizing and building a resistance movement strong enough to protect our democracy and throw these crooks out. We would love to have you with us!
It is my fervent hope that this will become SO bad that this administration will end up tarred, feathered, and run out of town by their own party. Jobs report (due tomorrow) is not expected to be good, 401K's are dropping in value like a canon ball dropped from the Empire State Building, investors are seeing the same and scrambling. The signs have been there for a while, gold always rises when the markets go down.
There is also the revenge element to this. Obama and Biden brought the economy back from Bush's 2008 debacle, and did so strongly enough that it weathered 45's first term, then grew even more under Biden.
I agree except about the jobs report. I've heard that they're changing the way they count things and will not longer be including some categories. It's been awhile since I saw that report so I don't remember specf
Do they even bother to compare the jobs lost to Musk's axe with the jobs gained? I remember seeing last month's job numbers and thinking, but haven't they lost more jobs than they gained?
By falsely claiming people were fired for poor performance, do they count on the jobs report the same way? If someone is fired for poor performance, can they still get unemployment benefits? I'm not sure of the rules, but if so then that's another way for the regime to fudge the numbers on the report (plus changing the way they categorize things to exclude things previously counted). I hope all the people illegally fired can get their jobs back (if they want them) and I hope they sue the pants off the regime.
I don’t believe a thing he says about ANYTHING. We’ve been down this road before, and we’re in for a world of pain before he’s done now. We just have to make sure he’s DONE in ‘26.
We can't wait that long. He's only been in office less than 3 months and look what he has done. Imagine 3+ more years of this. We will no longer exist - literally and as a country.
Jay, you have laid out a clear and understandable vision of what these tariffs are going to do to us. I understand basic economics, but this is so out of my league, and I believe it's out of Trump's too. I'd like to know who is actually behind this idea, since we know he didn't think of it all by himself. There is a puppet master pulling the strings and making him think this is a good idea.
I find it extremely interesting that Russia and North Korea are not included in this chart. It's quite telling, and if Congress doesn't get their act together and start speaking up against what is going on they are just as culpable. I realize Johnson is behind this, but there are 535 voting members in Congress (100 in the Senate and 435 in the House). Because the GOP dominates both houses with 53 GOP in the Senate and 218 in the House. That is a total of 271 who have the power to change this, but are either living in fear they will lose their jobs or are aligned with Trump. Either way, they are working against the people of the United States.
In theory, yes, but the reality of it is that there's a huge outlay of capital investment and time to move operations to a new country. Hyundai received a ton of press for its multi-billion dollar investment in the US but those new plants won't be operational until 2029 at the earliest. And that's a huge corporation--most foreign businesses lack that type of capital.
How does applying tariffs to uninhibited islands level the playing field? Russia sells products in the US, yet there are no tariffs against them? At best, these are not serious proposals. At worst, they are conceived by a lunatic.
This is just an extension of the extortion we've already seen with law firms and media companies. If he places a tariff on everyone, then he will have various captains of industry approaching him for exemptions. Those exemptions will cost those companies a lot of money. Money that will go straight into Chump's pocket. It's the same thing Putin did to get rich in his autocracy.
It is amazing how many people do not understand tariffs. My head hurts after reading some comments this has brought up today. It will cost all of us more money
As I've pointed out elsewhere, China's tariff actually amounts to 60.8% (it would appear that most people – I've come across 54% in three articles so far – have just added the two tariffs rather than calculate their cumulative result). The 34% tariff is imposed on top of the earlier 20% tariff, so it's incorrect to add them, they need to be multiplied, i.e. You need to add 34% of 20% (which is 6.8% as I describe below) to the sum of 54%. For example, an item costing $100 will cost $120 after applying the 20% tariff. Applying a 34% tariff to $120 gives a further $40.8 (10% = $12, 1% = $1.20, so 34% = 3 × $12 ($36) + 4 × $1.20 ($4.80 so $40.80 – 34% is just over ⅓ (33.33%) which would be $40, which gives a pretty close rough estimate) making $160.80 in total. I chose a $100 item precisely so that the percentage increase can be easily seen from the result (if I'd chosen a $50 item I'd have gotten $80.40: 20% of $50 = $10 and 34% of $60 = $20.40 (⅓ = $20), an increase of $30.40, which is 60.8% of $50, but that's not as obvious).
Alternatively, the error in adding the two tariffs is that it doesn't account for the 34% tariff applied to the 20% increase of the original tariff. 34% of 10% = 3.4%, so 34% of 20% is 6.8%, added to the 54% that is the sum of the two tariffs gives 60.8%. I hope that I've explained that well enough for anyone not mathematically minded to follow and that you can see why it's actually a 60.8% tariff in total.
"I fault the electorate as much as the media for the results..." 100% agree!
Actually, we were warned by the Rs themselves when Project 2025 was published in April 2023. It’s not too late to read it and see how closely the plan is being followed and what’s coming next.
Excellent point.
MAGA!!
Uh-huh.
We in Canada are not buying anything much from the USA. Nor are we traveling!

Congress still could force a correction off its own bat, with the Senate already showing "bipartisan" pushback, but so far, zero House support for tariff rollbacks, and tRump will just veto the fuck out of any challenge to his decrees. So, yeah, no Congress say.
And lets see if corp media continues to sane wash it all. I'm going with yes.

WHY DID TRUMP MAKE RUSSIA TARIFF-FREE?
I’M WONDERING: Maybe this is Trump‘s big fat gift (grift) to Putin - and of course Trump would expect a kickback.

That's a very intriguing idea. If that were the case, then just maybe it was Putin's idea in the first place.
Surely it was. The orange sadist is too stupid to think up something like that.
Trump is a Russian agent. That's why he left out Russia.
My guess is that not including Russia on the tariff list is an attempt to gain leverage against Putin in negotiations over what's going to happen with Ukraine: how much longer the killing will go on, who gets to keep which parts of the country, who gets to plunder which parts of the natural resources.

Why did Americans loose all those jobs in the 1st place? Corporations moved to countries with cheap labor.
If you look for goods made in the USA, you can find them. Not everything, but no tariffs and supporting companies that are here.
Lies, lies and more lies!
Don’t most of our clothes come from China and Vietnam?? #NakedNation
I do “get it” as it’s all about the profits and quarterly reporting.
