I'll second the background noise and thanks to Jay for distilling this. I wish paid journalists would do the same. Leave the high signal to noise ratio where it belongs, on Twitter.
Thanks for the in depth look at this. Especially the ‘weird’ time thing. The entire thing makes more sense to me now. Gonna be one hot summer in Georgia.
Somewhat unpopular opinion, perhaps, but I like the timeline; let them stew!
Let them roll their terrible eyes and gnash their terrible teeth (H/T Sendak), let them fall over themselves in saccharine helpfulness, let them be chronically nauseated with uncertainty.
With each day that ticks by, let them feel the vibrations of the approaching horsemen, whatever their number.
I’m nearly of the same mind. An indictment now versus an indictment in July, it really doesn’t matter from the standpoint of the law, but in terms of lost sleep, Trump knowing he is facing this issue in July is probably a bit of karmic justice.
Man...what a complicated situation made so much clearer. You've give the broad overview necessary to follow the intricacies of legal maneuvering so foreign to most of us. Yes, we're impatient, but it will be well worth the wait. Thanks for an excellent synopsis.
Thank you for breaking this down - this is tremendously helpful. I think a lot of us are just REALLY Trump- and MAGA-weary and want to see some of the high-level players put away, especially as 2024 electoral campaigns are starting to come into play.
Thanks for this clear explanation of the timeline on the Georgia case.
It strikes me that Ms Willis is some ways down the wormhole on this investigation. As you say, some of the fake electors are now saying that one particular fake elector committed an additional as yet unspecified crime. In addition, it has just come to public attention (though Ms Willis may have already been on to it ) that there are texts outlining a scheme to use code acquired when the Coffee County (I think I got that right) election board was breached to manipulate the election results. If that’s true, there’s a whole new level of criminality involved.
Yes, I didn’t include that in this discussion because while Willis has the evidence, it’s not clear that she will press forward on it if it’s not central to the 2020 election case. It could provide the basis of further indictments down the road, for example of Sidney Powell or Rudy Giuliani, on attempting to interfere with the 2021 senate runoff.
I sure would like to see that happen. I doubt that any of them rest comfortably at night. Unless of course they are on a lot of drugs or alcohol to help dull the pain.
Thank you, yet again for filling in the gaps 90% of the other news outlets never do. I am among those asking, "Why is everyone waiting???" but I know in my heart every t must be crossed and every comma used correctly, or Turmp will look to have the whole thing tossed.
Beautifully written - clear, concise and easy to follow. Really enjoyed this because I too am anxious for justice, anxious for Ms. Willis and anxious for the country. I hope all goes well for her, her team and the process, and that we can bring the Trump Train into the station -- and then stop it for good.
Perhaps we can put the Trump train into a museum and all the proceeds for entry tickets will forever be given to honest, charitable organizations… To do good things with the $$$
This is very helpful. When I first heard about the case, I thought that Trump and his cronies were violating the RICO Laws. His actions in trying to overthrow the election in Georgia were clearly like organized crime. My daughter was in Georgia over the weekend. Glad she is out before this happens.
Jay, thank you for explaining this. It's been so frustrating to hear so many "talking heads" complaining about the wait, but we have to get it right for it to stick!! It will, too. I feel like GA is going to get it right! :) Thanks again for all your hard work to keep us informed. <3
As just an average citizen I don't understand how a person with indictments can run for President. Are there any serious enough to force him to withdraw?
Kind of like the recent comparisons between Abe Fortas and Clarence Thomas, I think Trump changed the paradigm in this country. He was/is (though I still think his head exploded after 2020 and he's wallowing in his mental issues) a master at division. In creating this paradigm, he's set up a situation where almost all hands are tied, especially when it comes to legislation. The end result is this is playing out in the courts, the doings of which are too arcane for most folks to grasp. Particularly the MAGA set.
The Constitution does prevent someone for running for office if they have rebelled against the country. Impeached and convicted presidents also cannot run again. But Trump was never convicted, and to date only the 1/6 grand jury and Jack Smith can speak to rebellion.
the fact that he wasn't stopped with his second impeachment is frustrating in itself. One party's willingness to not do what's right even when one of their own put them all in danger because it meant turning against him. I truly believe enough of them knew it was wrong when then voted against conviction and would admit it behind closed doors which is all the more frustrating.
Though it doesn't really fit the definition, I consider them treasonous bastards. They openly defied their oath of office and failed to uphold the Constitution.
I view them as treasonous bastard whores, actually.
Yes. They openly defied their oaths of office and are not being held accountable, as if the $$ the "Johns" paid freed them from that. Color me disgusted with the lot of them.
Great analysis of the situation so far. Many of my friends have been so impatient about Georgia and the Smith-Garland investigation. All of the prosecutors involved have sussed out the political fallout, plus and minus. Give them credit for that. I don't think any of them want to bring charges until they know their case is as solid as it possibly can be.
I agree on both parts of your statement! I am sick and tired of explaining the concept of how some grand juries work (it is the same here in Ohio with terms) as well as trying to point out the sheer magnitude of Jack Smith's investigation & grand jury. I'd rather be patient and let them all do their jobs.
Sheesh, its not like there are magic law fairies that will drop down and put all the pieces together with a wave of their wands in the middle of the night!
Thank you for detailing this all out in an organized manner so we can understand. There’s so much noise it’s hard to filter. I appreciate you!!!

Ditto 💯

Brilliant. Really appreciate sitting in on Indictment Law 101. Thank you, Professor Kuo.

I agree. And the more he gets to campaign and fund raise the more frustrating it is.
Thanks for this clear explanation of the timeline on the Georgia case.

Let’s hope so. Between the two of them, they’ve done as much to undermine election integrity and trust in the process.
I sure would like to see that happen. I doubt that any of them rest comfortably at night. Unless of course they are on a lot of drugs or alcohol to help dull the pain.

Thanks for sharing the explicit background for the announcement from Fani Willis! Very helpful.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. Settles the mind.

'Tis why I view them as, frankly put, whores.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Most politicians are - the only questions are about what they will and won't do and for what price.
accurate

This is a great, educational article explaining so much. Thanks.
