“Physicians are now on notice that all abortions, except those necessary to save a woman’s life, are illegal,” the state’s highest court said. “ and do tell who gets to decide whether my abortion saves my life? Politicians? Magat incels? That old cranky man down the street? The moms for “Liberty” hens?

And the hypocrisy Infuriates me. Men not wanting to wear masks during the pandemic because they, “didn’t want to be told what to do with their bodies.” Men have NO idea what it’s like to be pregnant and should not be passing laws. If they could give birth I’m sure maternity leave would last 18 years.

"Here, Biden wins with Arizona, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. He doesn’t need Georgia or Michigan."

But you can be damn sure that we here in Georgia are gonna give it to him.

I am actually in the process of moving from Texas to Arizona. My vote for Biden is wasted in Texas but could have real impact in Arizona. I know for a fact I'm not alone...there are a number of women in my circle of acquaintances who are doing the same.

As a retiree, I can join the snowbirds who flock to the Arizona desert. Small town real estate is reasonably priced or I can just rent a place and spend a few months working on the great American novel. As long as I follow the rules of establishing residency, it's all good.

It wouldn't take many folks doing this to make sure Arizona turns solidly blue.

Now we need to closely watch all the voter suppression going on in red states, particularly in Georgia and Florida.

Side note: Doctors in Arizona are still not going to provide abortions, because the statute of limitations for this law is 7 years. even if the currently AG won't prosecute, who know what the next one will do.

Hoooboy. They just put their finger into a real hornet’s nest, didn’t they? If I had been on their side, I could’ve warned them. Did they think this through at all? I don’t really feel as though I’m much of a political analyst, but even I could’ve anticipated the blow back that this decision will cause. “Hell hath no fury like…” (You know the rest.)

And we women are plenty MAD.

Heather Cox Richardson's Substack has an excellent write up on the history of this law. The reason for there being no exceptions other than the life of the mother is that the law wasn't concerned with abortion as we know it. It was about men doing violence in general. Causing a woman to miscarry was simply one of many things that was prohibited. Applying an antique law in a way it wasn't originally intended just highlights the dishonesty of the anti-choicers.

One small correction concerning the narrow election of the Arizona State Attorney General Kris Mayes: Her initial 511-vote margin of victory shrank to only 280 votes after an automatic recount. (And that's a hair over 1/100th of one percent of the votes. Phew!)

Perennial loser and queen of the gasbags Kari Lake can already kiss her dreams of inflicting more pain on the Arizona populace goodbye. Ruben Gallego will be the knight Arizona needs.

The ultimate irony is that this 1864 law was actually written in an era was woefully ill-informed. These were the days of crackpots and charlatans (read that as water-therapy, laying on of the hands, magic salves, and precious little knowledge of even disease transmission. The civil war provided a jump start to serious medicine through the field hospitals -- providing for many "doctors" of the time their first intimate knowledge of what the inside of the human body even looked like. Heather Cox Richardson touched on it today. There were no antibiotics, no pain medicine other than alcohol or morphine, and no, "doctors" did not sterilize their instruments.

This was also a time of exceptionally horrific gynecological experiments performed (usually on slave women). Without anesthesia, "doctors" would try to remove the ovaries and uterus in order to "control" hysteria (read that as female emotions).

Joyce Vance also hit the nail on the head with her examination of the act, pointing out that it was, in effect, an effort to control lawlessness among MALES in Arizona. Lot of good it did. The shootout at the OK Corral didn't happen until 1881.

Like the Comstock Act, this should, by rights, be stricken as obsolete.

Abortion (forced birth) is a men’s issue as well. As the father of daughters and sons I am outraged that they might be forced to be parents (and I a grandparent) when they don’t want to be. For society I do not want children born who aren’t wanted to people not ready to give them the care and upbringing necessary.

One other impact. Two of the Judges who upheld the 1864 law are on the ballot in 2024. They will surely lose and Hobbs will be able to appoint two Democrats to the state Supreme Court. Why to MAGA…Thank you for turning Arizona blue.
