“Physicians are now on notice that all abortions, except those necessary to save a woman’s life, are illegal,” the state’s highest court said. “ and do tell who gets to decide whether my abortion saves my life? Politicians? Magat incels? That old cranky man down the street? The moms for “Liberty” hens?
It's not shocking at all---the so-called Pro Lifers aren't truly pro-life....they are emphatically anti-women. Anti-female rights of any kind. They want to drag us back to the 1600's status of no legal voice whatsoever--not even legal personhood.
From my research into what I find an absolutely mind boggeling attitude towards women and their rights, I found the following. There is a deep seated opionion by fundamental christians that if a pregnancy threatens the life of the mother then that is God's will. And if she dies then it was God's will too. This is an attitude that shows that women are not valued as the person they are. Their only reason for their existence is to have children and if they can't to do that than they might as well die. But I bet you that the same people who have that attitude run to dentist when a tooth hurts or have their infected appendix taken out when it threatens their life. Then it is not God's will. As a society we have a major task ahead of us to change those attitudes.
The pro-lifers are not pro-life when it comes to policy. That is why they would not care about our high infant mortality rate. Others do, but that might not drive them to the polls because it is a fixture we have had. One of the reasons we have this high rate is lack of access to good pre and post natal care. We need women's reproductive rights and health care front and center. That includes access to abortion, IVF and birth control, all of which are potentially on the chopping block. That will include research into all of these areas as well. So we will stagnate even in areas where they are willing to do things illegally. All of these need to be protected as the law of the land.
You go to your Dr. Tell him you are going to kill yourself if you can’t get an abortion. He certifies your life is in danger. That’s what someone posited on another substack thread.I’d like to see if it works.
And the hypocrisy Infuriates me. Men not wanting to wear masks during the pandemic because they, “didn’t want to be told what to do with their bodies.” Men have NO idea what it’s like to be pregnant and should not be passing laws. If they could give birth I’m sure maternity leave would last 18 years.
I have never understood how women get through pregnancy and birth. It constantly amazes me. If we men had to go through that, we would have made children illegal and the species would have died out a long time ago.
I would never presume the right to interfere between a woman and her physician.
I’ve never given birth. Though when my ex—still friends—was struggling in her only pregnancy I had this vidid and detailed dream that I was able to transfer what was to be my son into my body for the last 2-3 weeks before birth to give her a break. Then I transferred the baby back. Why? It was not to avoid the pain. It was because becoming a mother and experiencing motherhood was glorious for her. She did not want to be denied the experience, though painful. I learned a lot about giving birth but fully understand that I did not give birth. Earlier in life I once almost had to deliver a baby while on ambulance detail. Fortunately the mother held on but I had been trained on what to do and was hopefully prepared.
However, being a man does not blind me to what is around me. I see the reality of men who are really afraid of women’s power—which is very powerful and magical if embraced. I have always liked strong women who were comfortable with their strength. I have always liked women who were not afraid to tell me when I was wrong, but not in an abusive way.
Here is the problem. I’m not defending men in general as I realize I’m an outlier. I see all the misogynist men. I see all the MAGA men. I see all the bigoted men. But, I, also, see the women who love these men, who are hostile to strong women, who are vicious MAGA.
There are some deeper underlying problems here. I could elaborate but it would only be my opinions from my experiences and I have no claim to truth.
Sorry for rambling on, at least a little. One last thing. When my son was born, the female physician made sure I was the first to see his face and had me cut the umbilical cord. I treasure that memory. Not sure a male physician would have done the same.
I’m an old woman who has never given birth and isn’t at all sorry about that (I had one abortion, in 1976, and have never regretted it). My friends (female or male) who aren’t parents outnumber those friends who are. I’m writing here because there are so many men, of all ages, who are vociferously pro-choice, and so many women who are very much against pro-choice. We’d never have passed RvW had men not be a big part of the movement to legalize abortion.
Sometimes that fact needs reminding. I’m not directing my response at you only, and I’m sure I’m repeating what everyone knows, but I still want to say it.
Btw, I, too, still wear a mask in stores, subways and buses, and other public enclosed spaces (though not in restaurants). So far, I’m a Novid, too (Never had COVID).
A NOVID. I never heard that term before. I like it. May I use it?
I am very much pro-choice as I think it is unwise to run my life based on what I consider the mythology of religion.
I have been thinking about the terms wise and unwise: wisdom is defined as experience, understanding, common sense, and insight. accumulated knowledge, erudition, or enlightenment.
in politics knowledge is very tricky when politicians often believe they have knowledge when what they believe are facts are actually untrue. This explains why congress appears to be devoid of wisdom.
OK, I recognize I may be off on a tangent but that is just the way my silly mind works at four in the morning when this thought was rudely interrupted by a friend calling from Paris forgetting the time difference. She wanted to ask about what happened here in Arizona with this crazy abortion ruling and if I’d pick her up at the airport. Sounds like I’m complaining but the uncertainty of life keeps me from being bored.
I guessed that NOVID was out there but I was indulging my silly side. Helps keep me sane. I know, I know, I’m presuming I am sane. When Trump and politicians presume they are sane it makes me question what sanity is. It seems sanity should be made of sterner stuff.
Nah - we would have massively funded research to transfer the whole enchilada to y'all. Now that I think of it - could it be? ... nah... we not that smart.
I am actually in the process of moving from Texas to Arizona. My vote for Biden is wasted in Texas but could have real impact in Arizona. I know for a fact I'm not alone...there are a number of women in my circle of acquaintances who are doing the same.
As a retiree, I can join the snowbirds who flock to the Arizona desert. Small town real estate is reasonably priced or I can just rent a place and spend a few months working on the great American novel. As long as I follow the rules of establishing residency, it's all good.
It wouldn't take many folks doing this to make sure Arizona turns solidly blue.
I can’t bear the thought of Arizona in the summer (maybe way up north in the mountains?) but as you say, my vote here in Oregon is”wasted” in terms of the presidency or Congress. Oregon is solidly blue!
Now we need to closely watch all the voter suppression going on in red states, particularly in Georgia and Florida.
Side note: Doctors in Arizona are still not going to provide abortions, because the statute of limitations for this law is 7 years. even if the currently AG won't prosecute, who know what the next one will do.
I hope Az doesn't loose a bunch of experienced medical folks (retirement, moving to a non-American Taliban state, etc.) due to the fear of persecution. Once they're gone, it will be hard to replace them.
I imagine the fear for these folks is very real, since even if the AG won't prosecute, if they get charged/indicted by some back-water prosecutor, they're going to have to spend a bunch of money to defend themselves, and with a 7-year statute of limitations, the risk is pretty high that some wingnut ends up in office and decides to start going after folks. That's a mighty chilling thought . . .
The unintended consequences of red state policies on abortion, gun control, education are causing decisions to be made about moving to or staying in a red state.
Makes sense. I sure wouldn’t want to move to a state run by the Anerican Taliban fanatics, and wouldn’t want a family member to go to school there.
Indoctrination is real, just not in the way the right-wing thinks it is. Tolerance (and open encouragement) of bigotry, homophobia, racism, and misogyny is very corrosive.
It isn't just that either. OB-GYNs have THE highest cost of malpractice insurance of any specialty. Takes a very dedicated person to swallow that bite and still go into it. Combine that with legal jeopardy, and it's no wonder docs would rather do almost anything else.
Right. We thought we had a bad day yesterday at hearing this horrific news. Imagine how all of the people in the medical field that provide healthcare, including abortions felt.....
They may want to hold out until after November. BUT, in Idaho, we've lost too many ob-gyns, high risk prenatal specialists, and the accompanying fields.
There may also be the threat of county prosecutors going after doctors and anyone else involved. Some ass hat was on TV last night claiming that counties could pursue charges. Scary.
Actually Governor Hobbs just issued an executive order this morning stripping county prosecutors of the power to bring charges in this case, and gave it to the State AG.
Hoooboy. They just put their finger into a real hornet’s nest, didn’t they? If I had been on their side, I could’ve warned them. Did they think this through at all? I don’t really feel as though I’m much of a political analyst, but even I could’ve anticipated the blow back that this decision will cause. “Hell hath no fury like…” (You know the rest.)

Exactly. They'll decide....if you live through it...then you'll be charged with a crime.
And the USA already has a very high infant and mother mortality rate. Shocking they wouldn’t want to start there….

JFC of course, who else?
;)
(Q-Pluto) is perfect! And funny.
Definitely laughed and loved that. Then wondered if Q-Uranus would be more appropriate ( regardless of how " middle-schooley ) it is.
My spell check hates me for that one !
came here to say just that also. I'll be using that!
Kari Lake (Q-Pluto)
Yup stealing that one. Spit my coffee out 🙋🏼♀️
I read that three times!
Jay also does Marjorie Taylor Greene (Q-GA), which is also fun. :-)
I giggled out loud! It’s perfect!
That literally made me LOL
Love that!!
Loved that one!

Not a ramble. Yea a male
Probably would have too. I had two male docs and I think that’s what happened. Anyways appreciate your care about women and their reproductive health.

Shut up Jim. Ok. 😜♐️♐️♊️
Don’t shut up!
Yes, of course you may use Novid. I didn’t coin it, btw. A California friend (also a Novid) used that word.
I guessed that NOVID was out there but I was indulging my silly side. Helps keep me sane. I know, I know, I’m presuming I am sane. When Trump and politicians presume they are sane it makes me question what sanity is. It seems sanity should be made of sterner stuff.
I no longer care if I’m sane or not. To me, it’s character that’s important.
Oh no they would want to go back to work to get a break 😂
No. We’d be extinct if men gave birth.
Nah - we would have massively funded research to transfer the whole enchilada to y'all. Now that I think of it - could it be? ... nah... we not that smart.
Well, we know what Gloria Steinem said about sacraments.
"Here, Biden wins with Arizona, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. He doesn’t need Georgia or Michigan."
But you can be damn sure that we here in Georgia are gonna give it to him.
Thank you.
Thank you for providing this community of determined voters.
Goooooo Georgia!!!
Thank you Georgia!
I want to be damn sure there is to be no question of Biden's victory.
I want to be damn sure that any electorates that Kennedy may siphon off of Biden doesn't make a difference in the election outcome and the Biden win.
I think they call it a landslide!
That is what we need this time around.
And we love you for it!
The Kuo Community is pretty awesome.
You've got that correct! Jay is one of my absolute favorite Substack authors!
Make it happen, cap'n.

Understood - but I can't do it. Took us over 30 years to turn MI back blue, and I'm not gonna allow that to flip back if I can help it.
I have 2 friends with their spouses who have moved to Michigan since the 2020 election from blue Illinois to help you out.
Tell 'em thank you for me - and for a whole bunch of others, as well!
I can’t bear the thought of Arizona in the summer (maybe way up north in the mountains?) but as you say, my vote here in Oregon is”wasted” in terms of the presidency or Congress. Oregon is solidly blue!

This is a good point I hadn’t considered.
And little Speaker MAGA mike is on his way to Mar-A-Lardo to talk with Defendant Trump about "election integrity". What a nauseating image.
Terrible in the interim of course, but let’s hope it motivates voters there to rectify it!
6 months from now the fury of pink hats will be apparent.
Why wait?
I think it’s starting…… 😁
I hope Az doesn't loose a bunch of experienced medical folks (retirement, moving to a non-American Taliban state, etc.) due to the fear of persecution. Once they're gone, it will be hard to replace them.

Good news! My guess it is will be challenged by the local American Taliban (GQP), but hopefully it will withstand the challenges.
Oh, I'm sure it will, but it won't be decided until after the election.
Glad to see she and the DA are doing everything they can to mitigate this insanity.
I was wondering about that. She said they won’t prosecute but I wondered if they would still do them.
I did read that somewhere. Intimidation. Infuriating!
I thought the same thing.
Hoooboy. They just put their finger into a real hornet’s nest, didn’t they? If I had been on their side, I could’ve warned them. Did they think this through at all? They put their whole heads in the nest, never mind fingers.
More like whole heads up their asses.
To be fair, their heads are permanently lodged there!
Members of the “Glass Bellybutton Club” they are . . .
ooh! Good one!
Heather Cox Richardson's Substack has an excellent write up on the history of this law. The reason for there being no exceptions other than the life of the mother is that the law wasn't concerned with abortion as we know it. It was about men doing violence in general. Causing a woman to miscarry was simply one of many things that was prohibited. Applying an antique law in a way it wasn't originally intended just highlights the dishonesty of the anti-choicers.
One small correction concerning the narrow election of the Arizona State Attorney General Kris Mayes: Her initial 511-vote margin of victory shrank to only 280 votes after an automatic recount. (And that's a hair over 1/100th of one percent of the votes. Phew!)
Wow that’s scary. But they have a lot more to run on this time. People better be scared. They are coming after it all. Womens vote and your shoes are next.

The ultimate irony is that this 1864 law was actually written in an era was woefully ill-informed. These were the days of crackpots and charlatans (read that as water-therapy, laying on of the hands, magic salves, and precious little knowledge of even disease transmission. Thanks Jay for the great write up and hearty guffaw!
