I have a couple of close Black friends here in Atlanta. This comment doesn't help back up the stats you presented, but I still think it's worth sharing. One of them said he's voting for Cornel West if anybody asks until election day — I assume he's referring to pollsters. Then when he gets his ballot, he's voting for Biden. After that, it's back to West, lol. I haven't asked my other friend, but he's always been a Biden guy.

But if the Orange Marmalade of Mindlessness wants to use his limited resources attempting to whip up the Black vote, or, for that matter, the New Jersey vote like he did a few weeks ago, I say, go for it, Convict in Chief.

I'd also add that just reading the local media, most people are offended that the Convict in Chief thinks that Blacks will relate to him because he's a crook. That's just about the most insulting thing you can possibly say to anyone. There's a Black Renaissance going on. Leave it to the Orange Puffy not to notice that.

Yeah, good luck "flipping" NJ, pal. Not a snowball's chance...

But do keep trying. Tie up those resources. The few that are left not being used for legal fees. (long, mocking laughter ensues)

As a NJ native, born and bred, I agree that flipping NJ generally appears unlikely. But the U.S. Senate seat up for grabs might very well go to the rEpublicrites dues to Menendez's criminal legal troubles. That will be a very bad outcome for trying to keep the Senate Democrat-controlled. And, in fairly recent history, NJ elected two Republican governors to double terms each: Christine Todd Whitman and Chris Christie. NJ is not reliably a Democratic Party lock.

Isn't Andy Kim running for his seat? He seems like good people.

I actually feel bad for Menendez's son who's a Representative and running for reelection. He may lose his race because of his dad. And as far as we know, he seems to be an ok rep.

And also feel sorry for Alicia Menendez, his daughter who’s been on MSNBC for awhile.

Get rid of the tax exempt status for any church that allows campaigning in their services!!

Getting really tired of the anti-Biden NYTimes.

I dropped my subscription after 30+ years. You’d think New Yorkers would know who Trump really is after decades of scams in NYC and Atlantic City.

We do. The Times seems to have forgotten.

Judith Miller helping to lie us into Iraq 2 was the shark-jump, for me...

I still read it because the reporting is still great on a lot of other topics (e.g., wonderful interview with Serena Williams this past weekend) but I read their political coverage with a grain of salt.

I’m vacillating between dropping my (very cheap) online subscription and not. Our TV is broken, so I check the NYT daily to see if any major catastrophes outside our apartment have occurred. Other than that and Philip Galanes’s column, I don’t read it, especially for current political news. Just as with Hillary in 2016, the Times in 2024 is too pro-Trump, albeit somewhat subtly, for my blood pressure.

Trump complained about the crime rate in Detroit. He's right, of course. There was a 34-times convicted felon right on stage when he spoke!

Trump has long been known for creating his own reality, then believing it. That doesn't mean the rest of us should. From the time he slithered down the escalator at Trump Tower, to his never-ending rallies, and onto his current appearances, Trump's dirty little secret is that he buses in supporters who pretend to be a spontaneous crowd.

Shortly after his 2015 announcement, members of his worshipful crowd of supporters copped to being actors who answered a casting call and got paid to be there. Trump's recent crowd in the Bronx was remarkably whiter and more MAGA than the people who live there. When video of his nearly all-white *Black church* audience in Detroit drew attention, I went to the church's website and watched a bunch of YouTube videos of previous services to confirm what we all suspected: this wasn't the usual congregation for 180 Church Detroit. I'm guessing the Trump campaign is using paid 'audience members' to boost the crowd size ['cause we all know how Trump feels about crowd size] and to make sure the crowd was sufficiently enthusiastic.

Donald Trump found his niche in reality TV. He knows how to sell an image, especially to a willfully gullible media. And for Trump even the reality he has to create himself becomes the real thing. Do you think any of the sycophants around him will say otherwise? Me, neither.

Expand full comment

The church audience may have been cult members. For them it's like following the Grateful Dead.

But I did wonder about his stop in the Bronx and how many of the people of color who showed up were actually paid to be there. It was also a mostly white crowd.

Jay Kuo: Let's see, Trump is in a Black Church, except that IT ISN'T.

Trump reports record crime in Detroit, which actually experiences RECORD LOW.

Hmm. An average day in Orange-World.

Thank you for your fearless reporting on a somewhat thankless subject.

It seems as though Trump's campaign is barely even trying, sometimes. The white participants could have corked up like Al Jolson, they could have used photoshop to transfigure the attendees, or they could have simply created the event out of thin air using AI. It is a habit that has become ingrained in the right from decades of Fox and Friends, where it is perfectly safe to assert anything without a shred of evidence, while counting on their doting public to nod their heads like Trump in a courtroom.

Without deconstructing the various spin centrifuges spewing atomized agitprop into the national breathing air, these performative exercises will continue to be portrayed as actual events with actual significance.

Yep, they are so laissez faire in their chicanery as if taunting anyone to challenge their claim to a delusionary landscape.

Please accept my award and respect for using both “laissez faire” and “chicanery” in your comment. :)

Even Nate Cohn, he of the "NYT-Siena" poll fame, concedes that a large chunk of Black "voters" for tRump are among the least likely to turn out to actually cast a ballot, let alone vote for tRump. He's also conceded the point that "likely" voters are decidedly pro-Biden, and has been frantically redoing polling workups to reflect the latter.

The "Black church rally" was so easily deconstructed by a LOCAL Detroit reporter, putting to shame the factitious WaPo/NYT writeups, and a complete takedown of uninformed reporting. I mean, what photos or vids were the MSM guys actually looking at? SMFH.

The media isn't mindlessly going along with this. They know exactly what they're doing and it's on purpose. I have no idea why formally respected news outlets have decided to do this, nor can I figure out to what end? What do they think is really going to happen under another trump administration? Have they not read Project 2025? They're certainly not reporting on it. I just don't get it, but here we are. They are just as shameful as trump and Republicans, and equally to blame, at this point. They should be ashamed, but I doubt they have that capacity any longer.
