Delivering the Equality Vote

Today I’m off for Lunar New Year’s celebrations. But I thought I’d use my platform here to try to do some activism—maybe enough to help swing the national election this year!

As many here know, I am a member of the Human Rights Campaign Board of Directors. Each year, at Lunar New Year, I hold a fundraiser for this amazing organization. In our AANHPI community, the “red envelope” is traditionally a gift given from an elder to members of younger generations—or among friends, family, other relatives and colleagues.

This year, I hope to convince many readers here to send red envelopes to the Human Rights Campaign, which is on the front lines fighting for equality. We are working especially hard for trans youth and their families, who are facing relentless, dehumanizing attacks daily, spurred on by cruel and cynical politicians.

Just this week, Iowa introduced legislation that said trans people are not “equal” because “equal” will not mean “same” or “identical” when it comes to them. I hope you’re as outraged and alarmed by this as I am. It is fascism, plain as day.

They say the trick to overcoming anxiety and despair is to first imagine not the horrific outcome of a Trump reelection, but the amazing outcome of sending him packing for good. But it’s not enough just to imagine it! You must also take one concrete step toward that goal. So here is a great opportunity to do so!

And this is the really cool part: Your donation to HRC is a two-fer! It not only funds our critical mission to protect the most vulnerable in our community from right-wing hate and legislation, it also will help MOBILIZE MILLIONS of equality voters in key battleground states. These voters will help determine the outcome of the presidential election. In places like Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Nevada, our numbers are high enough to easily make the difference in a tight race. And we plan to turn out as many of us as we can—especially Gen Z voters, more of whom identify as LGBTQ+ than Republican!
