All eyes are on the debt ceiling this week as Republicans in Congress position themselves once again as the party of obstruction. What ought to be a routine, bipartisan move to raise the limit on the nation’s ability to borrow—after all, it’s right there in the Constitution
The Republicans have just written their own suicide notice. In the short term they have given themselves no fallback position that will allow them to save face in any reasonable way, no reasonable outlet for the blowback from this little stunt, and a weapon of massive electoral power for the next election cycle. No matter how this plays out they have set themselves up as the "Party who tried to destroy America" in any political ad shown from now till Nov 2021. And that doesn't just apply to what the Democrat PACs can do to them then, it also applies to what will happen in the primaries next summer, and that is not as far away as it seems at the moment. This may not be the straw that breaks the camel's back, but the groaning noises will certainly get louder.
