This should not be surprising to Republicans. The Florida legislature has discussed everything but the most important things to Floridians: the economy, property taxes, and insurance. Instead they are off on their own little tangents about LGBTQ Floridians, but haven't done a thing to benefit the 99% of people who don't fall into that category. We are paying $4/gallon for gas, grocery prices are through the roof, and they're worried about rainbow sidewalks. Give me a break.

Anastasia Pantsios's avatar

Sounds like Ohio. There's a property tax debate raging to the point where a group is collecting signatures to abolish the property tax, which would bankrupt every town and county. The legislature deliberately underfunded public schools to award universal education welfare checks (vouchers) to rich families to send their kids to elite private schools. Child poverty is off the charts. Health care access has become harder. Food banks are overwhelmed. My cost for a gallon of gas at the station I always go to jumped $1.20 in one month.

So you know what our legislature spent last week debating? Banning drag shows!

Trump will be a bigger loser on Saturday, when the largest anti war rally will take place globally. Here is a list of the places around the world that I could find with rallies. Please share this with all family and friends who lives abroad.

Here in Key West Florida we’ve been inundated with attacks on our home rule, including our LGBTQ plus community.

We have a mayor up for reelection who has just used a highly unethical tool, a push poll to attack a highly committed local, (who is presently a commissioner fighting against these unethical MAGA types), hopefully to be the next mayor.

This present mayor has shoved us under the bus several times and bowed down to DeSantis and his cronies.

Our state representative and senators are no better. Gimenez, Scott and Mooney are deaf ears to our desires.

I hope the “blue wave” makes its way to Key West and the keys

Lindy's avatar

Well, Florida, I find it both ironic and hilarious that Mar Largo is now in a democratic district. There's hope!

Cheryl Johnson's avatar

It has been 20+ years since I visited Key West, but even back then people who worked in Key West in tourism were priced out of the local housing market. (I went on a great architectural walking tour with a local who gave us the skinny).

I cringe to think about how bad it is now after years with DeSantis and Trump at the helm. Trump has driven away all the Canadian and European visitors on top of the mismanagement by FEMA for the tropical storms a couple of years ago (?) and the entire property insurance fiasco.

I hope that you get your blue wave this fall!

I live in the Phoenix AZ area. Filled up my tank for a trip to CA yesterday. Paid $4.99/gal. I've never in my life shelled out almost $50 for 9.7 gallons of gas.

Got to my destination which is on the CA/AZ border and they're charging just over **$7/gal*** here. Granted this rural burg is basically a pit stop off the I-40 and the closest place to get gas is another 40 miles east, so the gas stations here have always charged about $1 more per gallon.

Lindy's avatar

California always has higher cost of gas because of the taxes on gas.

Cheryl Johnson's avatar

IIRC, CA also mandates a special fuel blend which adds a bit to the cost.

I'm in NC very close to the SC line. SC has raised their gas taxes in the last couple of years, but it is still a lot less than NC (and especially my county). Just before the holidays a new Costco opened up in SC not to far from my house. When I have time during the week, I am combining a Costco run with a fill up. It's crazy busy on a weekday morning or early afternoon, so I am definitely avoiding it on the weekends.

I have talked to people who are already changing their driving habits based on the spike in prices. I suspect between spiking gas prices and the pandemonium at the airports plus worries about affordability in general, many people will stay close to home this year.

It may be time to go back to my "Covid plan"{ of renting a mountain retreat within a few hours of home for a week in July or August when it gets really hot in Charlotte.

Jocelyn B's avatar

Cheryl, you're right about the special blend.

I'm kinda stuck. I have to drive to work. I also have to drive from Sonoma to SF fairly frequently, to help my brother setting my mother's estate - although that's beginning to calm down, thankfully.

Laura Russell's avatar

Is the $2 difference all state gas tax? I’m in southern Arizona where the Arizona towns near California and near the freeway do charge more but it’s not due to taxes.

Michael G's avatar

It’s not all additional state taxes. California for decades has had market and price manipulation by the refineries. Some refineries have shut down due to not wanting to fight or obey state environmental regulations, but the bigger problem is collusion between the refineries. Planned and unplanned maintenance shutting refineries down all at the same time. Big Oil, refineries, and pipeline operators also lie about how gas gets transported and supplied in this state. They claim it’s all by surface street level gas tanker trucks, but in reality there’s a large system of regional underground pipelines going to tank farms all over the state.

Lindy's avatar

I think location has a lot to do with the price of gas. If you are out in the middle of nowhere.....gas is more expensive. On the Central Coast of California gas is usually always higher because it has to be transported. With the war in Iran, the cost of oil continues to go up. Diesel fuel is expensive. Most trucks are diesel so if you transport gas, the cost of transportation raises the cost at the gas pump. California has taxes on gas for environmental protection and to encourage people not to own gas driven cars.

Jocelyn B's avatar

It's maddening.

Jocelyn B's avatar

If it makes you feel any better, gas in the N. SF Bay Area has topped $6/gal at many station. Grrrr!

Barbara Rengstorff's avatar

I laugh (sort of) when I read that people back east are complaining they now have to pay $4/gal for gas. That’s what we WERE paying before this. Now we’re up to $5/$6 per gallon. ☹️😠🤪

Jocelyn B's avatar

Yes! Where are you located?

Florida needs to tax the rich....since all the billionaires seem to be moving there....

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

The US needs to tax the rich - period. And there should be a property tax surcharge for non-state residents, like at least some Canadian provinces do.

Patrick McConeghy's avatar

Heidi, While I like the idea about a surcharge for non-state residents, it might be unconstitutional. Check out the Dormant Commerce Clause ((derived from Article I, Section 8).

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

Thanks, Patrick - I hadn't thought of that in this context, though I'm sure plenty of lawyers will if something like this was tried! However, the key thing here may be "commerce" - it doesn't impact the buying or selling, but the ongoing ownership?

Regardless, there are a few things like this in Canada (specifically PEI) that I, personally, think are beneficial: Islanders get a 90 day first shot at RE listings and any waterfront purchase over a certain amount (100 ft per owner, I think) needs to be approved by the province. However, those laws are people-centric and we all know business comes first in this country. 🙄

Let us not forget that in 1979, the year before Ronald Reagan took office, the federal income tax rate for the top 1% was 70%. That is, they paid 70% of what they earned in federal income taxes. Reagan blew that progressive tax system right up as soon as he got in power, all under the guise of the bogus “trickle down economics “.

Jeff's avatar

Not quite correct. They paid 70% of the top amount of their earnings (it's progressive tax system - each new rate only taxes the income over the starting point of that rate. Even in the 1950's (where the top rate was 91%), the top 1% on average only paid 42% of their income paid as taxes.

https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/federal/taxes-on-the-rich-1950s-not-high/ (who try to make it sound like it’s not really that much different)

Of course, now, their top RATE is 37%, and they average only 26.1% of their income paid in taxes-on-the-rich

I still find it shocking that 31% of independents approve of Trump. I wish the pollsters would follow up with, "What exactly do you approve of?" Followed by an expletive.

Also, I'm going to repeat a joke I've made that hasn't landed elsewhere, so probably won't here, but I'm too old to care...

... I think that if Ms. Gregory has a sense for outlandish humor, she should show up on Mar-a-Lago's doorstep wearing a dominatrix outfit and ask if Donny is ready for his next lesson.

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

Maybe the "joke" isn't landing because it's blatantly sexist and in very poor taste?

Patrick McConeghy's avatar

I can't understand why anyone would approve of Trump, but I suspect those 31% of independents are basically voters who generally lean Republican and vote that way most of the time. "Independent" is a curious misnomer.

Charles Bastille's avatar

The part I can't get my arms around, and this has been true for a long time, is how even Republican leaning folks can tolerate this slime ball. He doesn't represent traditional Republican thinking at all. Adam Kinzinger is who I think of when I think of real Republicans. Certainly not the grifter in chief.

Hanna's avatar

Charles. I think it is funny-ish (with a BIG 'ISH')

It's really meant as a commentary about Trump, but I can see how that would fly overhead if someone doesn't know me.

Goodness gracious, schadenfreude is EXACTLY the name for what I’ve been feeling, since reading of this unexpected little victory, right in Donald Trump‘s backyard. Or front yard❣️

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

Of course, Trump disavowed the Repub loser after he lost.

FWIW, the Democratic Party Committees - state and national - need to get their heads out of their collective asses and start realizing that EVERYTHING is up for grabs these days and that voters are going for non-traditional, progressive and progressive-leaning candidates!! I am so sick of them siphoning (or attempting to siphon) donated funds to other races they deem more winnable/important (ActBlue) or resorting to oppo tactics against candidates in their own party (I live in Maine where Chuck Schumer. et. at. are pushing Janet Mills over popular favorite Graham Platner).

Of course, the larger issue is our two party system, but bigger fish to fry at the moment.

Susan's avatar

Maine needs Graham Platner! I know Janet is "seasoned" but she is old already and a 6-year term will take her to 82! I have always been a supporter, but it is time for us to get some new, younger blood into the Senate. I will be voting for Graham!

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

Me too!! And Janet Mills will be 79 in December of this year, therefore 85 at the end of a six year term!!

Susan's avatar

Oops... gave her three years she didn't have... makes it even worse!

Riversong Pond's avatar

She has also stated that she will not support eliminating the filibuster which we will need to do in order to pass voter protection, eliminate gerrymandering, and reform the Supreme Court. She will be another Joe Manchin/John Fetterman.

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

I'm going to have to agree to disagree on eliminating the filibuster. That's a line that I'm not ready to cross. Sure, it's great when you're the party in power, but if you're not, you're powerless.

Patrick McConeghy's avatar

Losers don't fare well in Trump's world, even those who have never lost, let alone those who have!!

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Couldn't agree more, Heidi. Have you noticed that on the ActBlue payment page, there's a disclaimer that says the candidate they're supposedly collecting for doesn't necessarily know about the ActBlue solicitation? It's partly why I stopped giving money through that portal.

Heidi L 🇵🇸 🇺🇦 🇬🇱's avatar

I have noticed that and the fact that 3.95% goes directly to ActBlue. Unless you "tip". Everyone's got to get a cut. Unfortunately, it's often difficult to find how to donate directly.

Denise Donaldson's avatar

Yep, the cut for ActBlue is another drawback.

I had to look up Sherrod Brown's support organization to find out where to mail checks. I don't know if other Dem candidates do something similar or not.

Jane in NC's avatar

The headache this represents for republicans cannot be underestimated. They're now looking at having to spend money defending Florida, Texas and other red states they assumed were safe. But every special and off-year election so far has shown that republicans aren't safe ANYWHERE.

Trump's star is fading all over the country, and there aren't enough diehard MAGAs to stop the coming tsunami. That's why Trump is pushing the voter suppression SAVE Act so hard.

Linda McCaughey's avatar

I'll take all the glimmers of hope I can get.

Self Sabotage's avatar

I hate that we’re looking at this as a “rare Florida flip.”

Growing up, Florida was reliably red north of I4 until about I10, and reliably blue south of it.

That my old home state has swung so far back to the madness of conservativism - and has been, for so long - is sickening.

Congratulations to the earth shakers!!

Cathie Mullins's avatar

Not so long ago, Florida was reliably purple. That was before gerrymandering and other efforts from MAGA to steal elections. Remember, every accusation is a confession from the MAGAts of the world.

Janice Rihn's avatar

Well, I used to be a Republican, then, a Democrat, then a Republican, NOW, a Nonpartisan, always voting for the PERSON, not the PARTY, and mostly living in a very RED state, which is also the home of one of two Unicameral state governments. I never paid that much attention to politics, until Hillary lost, and even then, DJT’s first term seemed survivable. Now, not so much, and I can no longer bear the smiling photo ops of “MY” lying Senators & Representative, devoted to a man I would NEVER let sit down at my table!

When faced with the prospect of a Nazi invasion of England, Churchill vowed that the British would fight for every street and house. Why do we keep hearing that the Democratic Party surrenders when polls and numbers seem against them? Where is the billionaire money that would allow the Dems to fight tooth and nail for every state and national level election in every district, no matter how hopeless it might seem? And why are we hearing that a state Democratic Part is in "disarray" for years?

Look at retired Brig Gen Shawn Harris in Georgia, who keeps fighting in each election in his red formerly Marjorie Three Toes district. A good man with centrist positions and impeccable integrity. Even in losing, supporting such a person whole heartedly sets a long term example that eventually pays off. Dems should do that everywhere, with billionaire money recruited in an organized way.

Tired of hearing about Democratic Party disarray and second place fund raising. Why? Because these flipped seats may be due to the passions of the moment, in the face of the most corrupt President in our history. If the GOP comes to its senses, gets someone else who is just as evil but smarter at communication (and some policy choices) the passions could cool, and we are back to some newer version of MAGA with better leadership. Unless the Dems can plant deeper roots than the off year election passions. It is still a long way to 2028.

Quoting from a FB post by Sherman Yellen "No. I want DJT to live long enough to know that you cannot smother truth and justice with gilded gimmicks and lies. I want him to know that his name will be ripped off every building - and that his ballroom like Berchtesgaden will end in the trash-bin of history. Can't wait for the next Bezos movie "Melania - Bride of Frankentrump." For the first time I suspect that DJT will not finish his term. He will retire before the law catches him. He will face an awakened people and a life stewed in his own lies. And America will see the end of the Trump choice - praise or prison."

A LOT of the voters in Florida are Senior Citizens. All they really want from life is a nice chubby 401k and peace and quiet.

What's been happening to the markets recently has been neither quiet NOR peaceful. Some of the people who spend most of their time snoozing in front of daytime TV have started to wake up. "George! Have you seen what's happened to our portfolio?!!!"

DeSantis has called for a special session in April to address yet another dummymander. It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.Florida also needs to pass a state budget as they were too busy during regular session naming Florida airport(s)/roads after our Warmonger/Pedophile in Chief.

There were 3 special elections in Florida yesterday.

In FL 51,the Dem lost by ~ 9.5 %,last election it was ~ 14%, in this very red district. The Dem was also massively outspent.
