I left a comment on one of their articles about it. They won't "approve" it because I ripped them for their obsession with their stories on Biden's age without making a comparison to Trump, who is only three years younger but talks like a three year old and is, basically, crazy.
I too have been rejected by the NYT for making a comment on their poll that I questioned them doing a poll as not being appropriate because it is not reporting the news but creating it. I also questioned the demographics and poll criteria. So, instead of posting it, someone replied to me to point out to me what his demographics were. I told him that unless I see the questions, and know how it is delivered it means nothing to me, but I don't think it is legit. And, so, no surprises for me here! We know most Americans want abortion access, and they are clearer on why now that so many places have removed the rights. It is like we stepped back 100 years. Most people really don't want to go back in time. Having pain care during dental surgery is nice, and that is what abortions represent too, they represent women getting the care they need whether their pregnancy is wanted or unwanted and things go wrong. People want the best, least costly, most effective means of taking care of their health. So, as far as polls go, I ignore them, other than to question the NYT doing them. This is why, on most days I scroll right down to the mini-crossword, and spelling bee on the NYT link after skimming what else they have to offer.
Someone from NYT replied to you but didn't post your comment? That's just wrong if I'm understanding you correctly.
I need to learn to ignore polls, too. I'm not so good at that. I get riled up. I do think most people realize that these people are trying to set us back 100 years. I think most people get that they want to send us back in multiple ways. The media wants us to think that the abortion issue, as important as it is, is the only thing driving this. But everyone gets the sense they're trying to push us back 100 years on every area of life. Everyone knows they'll go after contraception next. They've already said they will. So I don't think this kind of voter outcome goes away in states that pass abortion rights into their constitution. People have become aware of what is going on.
Try just deleting their polls news. It works for me. Given how much I subscribe to, I have to be good a skimming, and things I don't want I delete. Also, I have a rule of not having more than 50 emails in my inbox a day, so I clear things out. A NYT poll will be quickly gone. I will read discussions of issues, and things that actually happen, but not polls. My husband a physicist and mathematician is very skeptical about polls too. He is one of those who believes that statistics can be manipulated to say/show what you want them to. So, that is how I look at polls. No one should be reporting on a poll without telling methodology, and showing the questions. Also, how are they gathering their demographics? And, do they have a random sampling? The thing that angers me the most is why are they creating news, instead of reporting on it.
The Washington Post will one-up the NYT by explaining why it is VERY bad news for Biden. (On a historical note, the day after Bill Clinton was elected to Presidency the first time, the Post headline read: Clinton Elected. Subhead: Why he will fail.
NYT lead subhead on their main story about yesterday's elections: "President Biden is unpopular". Seriously? They need to stop flogging Biden with their horse-race mentality and start reporting on the STAKES!
Virginia is a bellwether. So is Kentucky. The party that has won the Kentucky governor’s race the year before the general election has gone on to win the presidency each election this century.
It was a heartening day for freedom. It never ceases to amaze me that extremists believe their divisive wedge would ever be attractive to people who actually think and have skin in the game. I will enjoy watching that sharp wedge dig further and further into their own electorate until only the obviously crazed are left standing and we can get back to some semblance of normal governance and maybe they can crawl back into their regressive cages.
I’m okay with a little bit of the election anxiety, if it keeps folks motivated. I think complacency is what led to 2016, and I hope the lesson from that resounds for years and decades.
Complacency AND the still under-recognized phenomenon of women leaders being perceived as unpleasant, bitchy, aggressive, etc. we’ve made progress, but we (women included) still have a long way to go to diminish that inherent sexist bias. IMHO, that’s a big part of why Kamala wouldn’t have a chance at the presidency in this election cycle, and recognition of that is likely why the WH keeps so much of her important work downplayed in the national conversation.
True, but I don’t think they should downplay her contributions because she has been traveling extensively on behalf of the administration, both domestically and internationally, and I think people need to know what she’s doing. That may boost confidence in her. I mean some of this dislike of VP Harris is just plain old racism, but I think some people are just confused about how much she actually is contributing.
Fair enough - people like me unfortunately have a problem - once I start doom scrolling I can't stop! Glad we at least have places like Substack where there are civilized engaging comment threads as opposed to troll/bot factories that make me wanna hide under the bed
Democratic voters took a big dose of hopium with their breakfast Cheerios, and then went to the polls and did their thang!
MSM, on the other hand, still crediting the NYT-Siena poll of last weekend, were still looking for that elusive "Red wave"...how's that working for you, WaPo, Times, et al?
This is indeed a wonderful "shift" if it continues. My talking points to anyone that would "listen" is simple. The current GOP is an affront to all of the war veterans that fought and either died in theater, came home with pieces of their body and mind missing and all the other sacrifices made by them and their families to protect our republic and the principles of freedom we hold so dear. As these brave souls faced down bullets and bombs, Washington is occupied by congressmen that can't even face down Trump and his extremist mob of cretins. Their spineless capitulation to the orange Hitler wanna be is such a disgrace.
Apparent a lot of young people who like Trump. That’s what gave it away for me. Biden only trails Trump among young people by six points? Ha! That’s more than a 20 point shift. Not credible
Self-selected voters who want to share their negative thoughts answer those calls. Please don't blame we old folks with landlines--a lot of us just hang up.
Yeah, I told people that just bc we aged doesn’t mean we suddenly became conservatives. Issue 2 passed here in Ohio too and that is for legalizing pot.
And the sample sizes are tiny. A fundamental violation of statistical analysis. The pollsters can sample 30,000 voters in the state in question, and then come back to us.
Problem: They won't find 30,000 people to answer their phones, landline or otherwise.
Those calls can’t even get through to me because my phone lines do not accept calls from unrecognized numbers (they have to be in my personal contacts or whitelisted) the rest get shunted to voicemail.
Jessica, Thanks for coming to our COIN meeting in Oregon last night! Your energy and savvy added to the joy of many Democratic election victories. You gave us great ideas for carrying the momentum forward and defeating our two MAGA US Representatives. Onward!
What great news to start the day!!! It’s OK that some just don’t get it - that our personal freedoms are the breath of the people. Thank you Jay for the concise and insightful post
Rethuglicans are the clown car of parties, with nothing going for them but a lemming-like desire to jump off a cliff to follow their cult leader. Yes, I like to mix my metaphors. LOL!
We know that in general most voters prefer Dems' views on major issues. But that doesn't lessen the ongoing dangers of Republicans' voter-suppression efforts and the problems with getting people out to vote in sufficient numbers to overcome GOP win-at-any-cost trickery.
Given Youngkin's hard right stances on issues today, I was starting to think I misremembered that he ran as something of a centrist. Thanks for the reminder that it's been quite the bait-and-switch--about which voters have now had their say.
Looking forward to The New York Times explaining how this is actually bad news for Joe Biden.
I left a comment on one of their articles about it. They won't "approve" it because I ripped them for their obsession with their stories on Biden's age without making a comparison to Trump, who is only three years younger but talks like a three year old and is, basically, crazy.
Well, of course they won’t approve it. It’s really tragic to see what was once one of our finest news organizations going down the drain.

"The thing that angers me the most is why are they creating news, instead of reporting on it". This, especially this.
They seem willing to do anything to avoid being accused of committing journalism . . . Sad.
Couldn’t have put it better myself.
Well done. Didn’t print it ? “ Shocker”.

From today's Wonkette:
Joe Biden Refuses To Resign After Democrats’ Humiliating Night Of Wins
Probably too old to know there was an election.
Yep, best substack headline of the day.
NYT lead subhead on their main story about yesterday's elections: "President Biden is unpopular". Seriously? They need to stop flogging Biden with their horse-race mentality and start reporting on the STAKES!
That was my first thought, too. What a pity that the Gray Lady has dementia.
Nate Cohn just now in a newsletter:
"Tuesday Was Great for Democrats. It Doesn’t Change the Outlook for 2024."
He's trying to explain it all away by saying that voters in Ohio (for example) were more engaged than they will be in 2024.
That's a joke.
Virginia is a bellwether. So is Kentucky. The party that has won the Kentucky governor’s race the year before the general election has gone on to win the presidency each election this century.
Then again.
https://xkcd.com/1122/
Nate Cohen already wrote an opinion piece on it. So tired of the negativity.
I don't listen to polls; I wait until the election is like 3 to 6 months away then I get Nervous. Then I remember Jimmy Carter and his second run !
😂😆 They’ll find a way. Excellence in journalism 🥳

tRump: "Too much winning, we can't take it any more!"
I’m convinced that he just misread “whining” as “winning”!
Lol
"maybe they can crawl back into their regressive cages." and die.
(Sorry, I'm old and have been stung by death enough times to be able to say this.)
Hope springs eternal.

Exactly.
If doom-saying polls are what it takes to scare Dem voters into turning out, I'm certainly willing to put up with them.
Fair enough - people like me unfortunately have a problem - once I start doom scrolling I can't stop! Glad we at least have places like Substack where there are civilized engaging comment threads as opposed to troll/bot factories that make me wanna hide under the bed
Don’t forget hubris in 2016.
What sweet irony that the Supreme Court abortion decision is likely to be the issue that gives Democrats control of Congress and the Presidency.
I think it was Alito who said in his Dobbs opinion that women are not without political power.
He’s being proven correct.
It’s showing the people who the republicans really are.
Democratic voters took a big dose of hopium with their breakfast Cheerios, and then went to the polls and did their thang!

Money Funded Media?
Main stream is tired.
Totally yoinking Hopium :)))
Borowitz today: "Furious Ohio Republicans Report Widespread Incidents of Women Voting"
Amazing.
I love it. Yes, we're furious, and yes. We vote!
LOL!

Lesson learned: issues and voter engagement, not polls. Who answers those poll phone calls, anyway?
Apparent a lot of young people who like Trump. That’s what gave it away for me. Biden only trails Trump among young people by six points? Ha! That’s more than a 20 point shift. Not credible

Or don't answer if we don't recognize the number on caller ID
Those calls can’t even get through to me because my phone lines do not accept calls from unrecognized numbers (they have to be in my personal contacts or whitelisted) the rest get shunted to voicemail.
Pure glee, Jay. Pure. Glee.
Thank for your advocacy and incredible mobilizing prowess, Jessica!
Jessica, Thanks for coming to our COIN meeting in Oregon last night! Your energy and savvy added to the joy of many Democratic election victories. You gave us great ideas for carrying the momentum forward and defeating our two MAGA US Representatives. Onward!
It was a pleasure!
And you are a big part of this, Jessica. 💜
Americans voted and the results are in!!!! Together we will reinforce Roe vs Wade nationwide! #mybodymychoice #womensrights
What great news to start the day!!! It’s OK that some just don’t get it - that our personal freedoms are the breath of the people. Thank you Jay for the concise and insightful post

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I feel a tremendous sense of relief. Another example of why it is critical to vote!!! Thanks Jay.
Republicans should have never touched Roe V. Wade. They'd shot themselves in both feet and both kneecaps with that one.
