I don’t remember seeing Stephen Miller’s name on the ballot. The Republicans are cowards.

Judy Shaffer's avatar

Indeed. Remind me again who elected Miller as the Shadow President?

DW's avatar

Last time around it was Jared Kushner

Colleen McGloughlin's avatar

I was just about to write the same thing! Evil incarnate.

Warren Brownell's avatar

Trump has always been known for being most swayed by the last person who talked to him. Miller sees the opportunity to use the authority and machinery of the presidency to realize his racist, misogynistic worldview. That's why he weaseled himself into the center of MAGA and why he makes sure he's always the last one to talk to trump. I personally refer to Miller as "Wormtongue"

Myra Marx Ferree's avatar

I also see Miller as an evil man with unelected power by virtue of his proximity to T but don’t use this to excuse T’s own virulent racism. That’s why he found and promoted Miller. That’s why his midnight rants are full of unvarnished racism. That is his history in birtherism and the Central Park 5 case.

Focus on the specific evils being done because they are something they both seek. The total stop on visas for family unification or in response to Afghan engagement for our cause in their country. The total stop on refugee processing and blocking legal asylum claims. Remember how the US refused to take in Jews fleeing Hitler who were not viewed as sufficiently well sponsored? Now any level of sponsorship and family relation won’t suffice for us to open our door even to someone fleeing a specific persecution aimed directly at them.

We know this is evil and shameful.

Hold all of them, from T down accountable. Impeach them, try them, punish them. Don’t give a single R your vote if you want a strong enough majority to insist on accountability (federally) and prevent gerrymandering and voter suppression (locally).

Warren: Wormtongue. Perfect.

It's disappointing, to say the least, that the democrats' list of requirements does not require humane conditions in the detention facilities. From what I've heard, none of them - not a single one - meets humane conditions. That's no surprise, given that the contracts for them are given to companies that are interested only in making money, not in doing anything humane once they get the people into their facilities.

linda's avatar

No matter what democrats do, it’s never enough for some folks. Not everything can happen at once. This is an uphill battle.

Susan Stone's avatar

I agree with you. It's just that living on the border with Mexico and knowing what has happened in our local "facilities", reasonable care for inmates seems quite basic.

ynot1965's avatar

I’ve read that there is already a measles outbreak in one of the facilities.

Punkette's avatar

Yep. The awful one in Texas.

insert_something_creative's avatar

That's a good point. As a side note, there is a bill here in California to tax corporations that operate ICE-funded detention facilities 50% and the money would go to immigrant services: https://abc7.com/post/california-bill-would-impose-new-tax-corporations-operating-ice-funded-detention-facilities/18486461/

Another thing I couldn't help but thinking while I was reading the list of reforms — even if the Democrats got everything they wanted, what's stopping DHS from just ignoring any and all of the new rules? Who is going to enforce them? We've already seen the Trump regime hold back congressionally-allocated funds or move money around to use for other purposes.

Funding needs to be contingent on adherence to the law somehow, though even that might not work. I wish Democrats collectively realized at this point that you cannot make a deal with Trump and the Republicans at this point. They operate in complete bad faith and won't hold up their end of the deal as soon as it's convenient.

I know a prolonged government shutdown hurts a lot of people, but this administration is hurting (and killing) a lot of people. Is it ultimately less harmful to just walk away and leave it shutdown, especially DHS? I don't know.

What I do know is that even if the Democrats got their demands and DHS actually followed them, I doubt the Democrats would get credit for it among the general population that doesn't pay attention to the news/politics. That's how these things seem to go when Democrats do what little they can to protect people from Republican policies.

Susan Stone's avatar

Very well said. I agree with you. That worst part of it is that even if we go through a prolonged government shutdown, ICE is funded through 09/29, so they could keep going. I'm certain DHS would ignore any reforms - they've already shown that's who they are. I'm certain there would be some lawsuits that could at least try to enforce the new rules. Especially since there seem to be more and more judges who are fed up with everything the administration is doing. I guess we'll have to wait and see, and hope that someone in the administration would pay attention to and adhere to the new rules.

Better than just shooting them, like ICE did with "dissidents" Nicole and Alex.

Susan Stone's avatar

I sort of agree with you, but I don't find abuse a whole lot better. That is in line with my personal history, which fortunately, not all share.

Randyzpdx's avatar

Last time I checked cruel and unusual punishment was still prohibited by the Constitution.

Susan Stone's avatar

I agree, but since when do trump and his minions care about that? The only things they care about are unchecked power and tons of money.

Myra Marx Ferree's avatar

At least they should be regularly demanding access for the unscheduled visits they are entitled to.

Susan's avatar

I have another issue for the democrats to demand. Remove.ICE first and not the other way around.

The regime can't demand protesters leave first in order to withdraw ICE. The protesters have their first amendment right to protest. ICE and the trump regime will not silence us. YOU REMOVE ICE FIRST!

Geri Guerin's avatar

Why not a mutual draw down? Oh--no way to coordinate that with civilian protesters. But it's worth a try--which hasn't happened. Last time I checked, US citizens weren't immigrants anymore. ICE should be leaving them alone and politely asking them to move on, rather than pressing them. Or, have ICE be actually NICE to the protesters, rather than shoving, tear gassing and firing rubber bullets.

Susan's avatar

Nope.....they can't be trusted at all.

Susan Linehan's avatar

and unless they are throwing things or physically obstructing ICE, why should the protestors move on?

These never-ending torrents of bad news - Epstein, ICE, Voting, Etc. - is a demoralizing military tactic used to take down societies, and it is being fully deployed here.

Obama explains the lengths they are going to: "You just have to flood a country's public square with enough raw sewage, you just have to raise enough questions, spread enough dirt, plant enough conspiracy theorizing that citizens no longer know what to believe. Once they lose trust in their leaders, in mainstream media, in political institutions, in each other, in the possibility of "truth", the games won."

Who is behind this? All is brought to you by - and serves the interests of - the 1% who own and control the media and most of the government:

Here is well over a dozen Fox, CBS, ABC, & NBC local news stations all reading an identical script sent down from their singular overlord to crash & burn alternative media in order to enhance the Oligarchy’s Overwhelming threat to our democracy:

Ultimately we are not consuming news. We are consuming a product manufactured by the richest men in human history, and that product is designed to do one thing: keep us so busy fighting our neighbors that you never notice the chains being fastened around our wrists.

Geri Guerin's avatar

You forgot one--Trump's behavior. If this is a planned attack, it isn't by the press, which is being fired in droves by BEZO. Simple answers aren't always the right ones. We need to keep fighting MAGA--it got us into this mess by wanting a real version of The Apprentice.

Apparently NY AG James has organized state law enforcement to be called to ICE raid sites to record their activity. Do you anticipate other states doing this? Could National Guard fill this role, wielding video recorders?

This would be good time and place to point out that the border wall which Trump once claimed was so important really wasn’t needed after all. That’s because Trump himself now says that there are virtually no illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border. Indeed, at a January 2026 Cabinet meeting, he stated, “We had zero illegal aliens being admitted into our country for the last eight months,” adding, “That’s hard even for me to believe.”

LIAR FRAUD, CONVICTED-FELON TRUMP, TRUMP’s MAGAts and TRUMP’s REPUBLICAN SYCOPHANTS ARE PLANNING TO INTERFERE IN THE UPCOMING NOVEMBER ELECTIONS.  THIS (please excuse the French) SHIT MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN!

We ALL know (in fact, EVERYONE knows) that NO NON-US CITIZENS will show up at the polls this coming November.

We ALL must be aware that, on election day, Trump will send his ICE and CBP goons to every polling place in Blue States and to every heavily-populated minority voting district polling place in Red States.  ICE and CBP will not be there to arrest/detain non-US citizens, they will be there to INITIMIDATE – and to (excuse the French) FUCK with US citizens who came to cast their votes.  As we’ve already seen across the U.S., ICE and CBP goons are racial profiling and are stopping and demanding proof of citizenship from US citizens.  This will seriously delay people casting their votes.  This will seriously delay the voting process to the point where polls might close before citizens have had the opportunity to cast their votes.  This will also deter US citizens from showing up at the polls, simply because they do not want to go through the hassle, the annoyance of being stopped by ICE and CBP.  FED GOV interference at polling places cannot be allowed to take place!  We must – WE MUST – do EVERYTHING we can to prevent election interference from taking place.  We must get an injunction from the courts to prevent this from taking place.

Please DO NOT WAIT.  Time is of the essence.  Contact your Senators and Representatives. Demand that they take action to prevent ICE and CBP (as well as all other FED GOV agents) from disrupting and interfering with the election.  Also send letters to SCOTUS Justices.  Put them on notice that WE THE PEOPLE will not tolerate election interference and that WE THE PEOPLE will hold them accountable and will do so by any means necessary.  Please also send a copy of this post to every reporter you have an email address for.

Could states authorize the National Guard to protect the polls?

TJ's avatar

Thank you Jay - watched Homan’s announcement of his “drawdown” - still can’t believe using military jargon on USA soil.

Here are Homan's exact words and key phrases regarding the removal of ICE and CBP agents from the Minneapolis area:

1. On the goal of the removal: "My goal, with the support of President Trump, is to achieve a complete drawdown and end this surge, as soon as we can," Homan stated.

2. On the reason for the drawdown: "That is largely contingent upon the end of the illegal and threatening activities against ICE and its federal partners that we're seeing in the community. We will not draw down on personnel providing security for our officers. I will not let our officers be put at risk".

3. On the timeline and process: "We want to get out. We want to get back to the normal operational footprint here... Tone down the rhetoric. Stop violating the law and impeding and interfering with us, and they'll draw down quicker".

4. On the scope of the operation:"We are not surrendering the president's mission on immigration enforcement, let's make that clear," Homan said.

5. Regarding protesters and roadblocks: "When I was made aware that the roadblocks exist, I called the chief of police, and he went and disbanded them after I got off the phone with him. He has promised to take enforcement action... This is illegal. You can't do that. My message to those folks is, what are you doing? You really think you're stopping ICE and CBP from doing their job? It's a joke".

6. On continued operations: "If you're in the country illegally, you are not off the table".

Now reports are indicating that approximately 700 agents are being rotated “out of theatre” and removed immediately.

Just going to address Homan’s second statement - “That is largely “contingent upon the end of the illegal and threatening activities” against ICE and its federal partners that we're seeing in the community.” What is considered ‘illegal and/or threatening’ - protesting? Ensuring kids are safely dropped off at school or daycares? Filming their illegal activities? Asking them for identification, badge numbers or to remove their masks?

As Homan continues, “We will not draw down on personnel providing security for our officers. I will not let our officers be put at risk” - So are the 700 paramilitary personnel really leaving? If protesting, filming, ensuring neighbors are safely dropped off at schools, daycares or not forcibly removed from cars or even at this point shot then there will NOT be a “draw down”.

Yea the Senate 10 point list is inadequate for the safety and security for Minneapolis, Minnesota and our entire country. As for these “concentration camps” which are primarily being ran by private companies making a ton of money from all our tax paying dollars frankly this is just plain BS… The treatment of anyone in these facilities is worse than subhuman, it’s too parallel to the tiered hierarchy of Nazi officials, primarily within the Schutzstaffel (SS).

Jay Kuo's avatar

The main question isn’t what Dems can demand as they could put lots more on that list. It’s what they can realistically achieve politically. I think there’s like two possible reforms that the House GOP would agree to, sadly. Johnson is opposed to all ten currently.

TJ's avatar

Thank you Jay. Only 2 possible out of 10 that just meets the rule of law.. shameful, utterly shameful. And at this point reading that the top judge in Minnesota is saying that up to 100 court orders are not being followed by ICE and that only 63% to 65% of Americans disapprove of ICE tactics, actions and behaviors. That is shocking to me that it’s that low..

Aristotle unfortunately was correct — “For man, when perfected, is the best of animals, but, when separated from law and justice, he is the worst of all."

Stay safe and healthy..

Geri Guerin's avatar

And the camps are all in the USA--so, how is that removing immigrants? Just increasing the burden on workers and retirees.

Susan Linehan's avatar

The govt has misread the law about "mandatory detention" and is detaining people they can NOT deport because there is no final deportation order, usually because the person has a pending case before the immigration courts. Some people have a hearing on their case set a year or more out. In fact most such people are entitled to a bond hearing and if they get one, generally are let go. The cases of disobeying court orders currently so much in the news are on this issue: the courts say "bond hearing or release, NOW" and ICE just says "oops, haven't seen that order." Detention in such cases is just an effort to make people with a right to be here, pending immigration court decision, to self deport. That's why the conditions are so bad.

Keep in mind; the owners and employees of private prisons are not government employees and not protected by any Supremacy Clause immunity nor qualified immunity. They CAN be sued in state court.

Douglas Brown's avatar

Could ICE be hamstrung in spite of still being funded? Are there any constraints that could be placed upon them through legislation that essentially meant that they couldn't spend their money on anything that was abnormal procedures? Could Congress require that some of the ICE budget have the requirement to be spent on its own oversight? Asking for a friend....

Jay Kuo's avatar

A Democratic House might be able to attach more conditions but the bill would still need to get through the Senate filibuster and Trump’s veto

It is LEGAL to request asylum in this country!!! People in the process of obtaining work permits, asylum, green cards and citizenship are here LEGALLY! THEY ARE NOT UNDOCUMENTED. Furthermore people who may have committed crimes or are here illegally are still entitled to due process and basic human rights. Torture is not legal under our Constitution. But Stephen Miller is filling privately owned detention centers, concentration camps, with people arrested for being immigrants or suspected of being immigrants without due process. These facilities are dirty, overcrowded and poorly heated or cooled. Food and water are poor quality and inadequate. Worst of all these people are being tortured! They're subjected to excessive light, noise and denied contact with lawyers and family. They are denied a trail before they're deported to facilities where they are imprisoned and tortured some more. Stephen Miller must be stopped NOW!!!

I was so embarrassed by the Orange Blight's interview on NBC News last night. He is a NATIONAL DISGRACE!

Bombay Troubadour's avatar

Speaker Mike Johnson chimed in with his own head-spinning, unhelpful take on immigration enforcement. “Imagine if we had to go through the process of getting a judicial warrant,” he exclaimed to reporters, “to apprehend people who we know are here illegally.”

Hey speaker, why is the potus ignoring court rulings, including district and appellate judges?

Hey speaker, why does your most recent apprehension reporting show close to half are citizens or here legally with no crimes.

That’s why you need a judicial warrant. Because nobody in their right mind would trust any of you leaders to be truthful about when you fuck up. Respect is earned, And you have fucked up big time now. The world hates all of you!!!

Except the leeches who make bank off the lies and crimes and manipulation.

Tick, Tick, Tick, see you in November.

Imho, the “two people and you get bad publicity” is the most horrific statement I’ve heard in my 85 years on this planet. The lives of two people who contributed to society were taken because ICE had their feelings hurt is one of the most disgusting things I’ve heard about. This regime is beyond evil.

Barbara A. Ginsberg's avatar

I am completely unsatisfied with those 10 "demands" as a starting point. What does "targeted enforcement' mean when it doesn't define the targets except to say that they can't detain U.S. citizens? If ICE is legal at all, it should only target undocumented immigrants who have been convicted of a felony or who have a final deportation order. This list of 10 demands, unfortunately, would not keep them from targeting non-citizens who are here legally, such as people caught in the asylum process.
