By the looks of it - the meeting didn’t do much good. His atty can’t even answer basic questions that he should have asked his client to begin with. When did you call on national guard - etc 🤣

I'm having a really hard time wondering why, if news reports are correct and Republicans are leaving the party en masse, Republicans are having an issue with a conviction and why certain ones continue to put their heads in the sand.....?

It’s a great question. Some see the bigger picture and understand that the party is in danger of splintering into factions. Others see that as an opportunity to seize control of one of the factions and tap into the power of its base. Some are just frightened to do anything, lest they become the target of the ire of the Trump supporters.

And they continued to meet with defense counsel today. 🤬

The U.S. Senate is one of the world's worst governing bodies. Democracy ha! not with the Senate. It is the albatross of Democracy. NOT MY SENATE.

I wonder what Trump is holding over these scumbags.

I wish it were something like that. But I fear it’s something even more sinister: They recognize where they can exploit the most amount of power and gain the most amount financially, and they tack to that direction. It could be a simple as they lack any basic moral principles.

First and foremost the dang buffoon was acquitted not exonerated. So now we can just sit back and watch the “ cookie crumble “ The good ole boys party is in chaos and ruin. Infighting, back stabbing and literally throwing each other in front of the bus. Let them be. Meanwhile Biden and his powerhouse team is laser focused on meeting the goals of his agenda to “ build back better “

I’m thrilled to wake up and not say “ what did the dang buffoon do yesterday.”’I’m sick in tired of being sick in tired of hearing his name.

Now for the three stooges that was an insanely stupid move, ya think ? I’m not certain they really thought that through, the risk verse the benefit. Did the meeting help what we already knew what inevitable. Nope

Jay Kuo why can’t the Constitution be amended to reflect the 21 century it just seems archaic in its ideology. Instead of being a basis for governing it’s become a political weapon.

Help me understand I think it’s time for a change

Thank you for the clarification. The Justice Dept policy is to not try a sitting President and impeachment is useless as long as political parties can provide a President cover. I guess that means a President is above the law? Sigh.

That's what we're learning. It's the exact opposite of what we're taught. Change it.

Impeachment is a political process, not so much a legal one, correct? Would this mean that, legally, Trump is not being tried for any crimes related to the insurrection, and could be investigated for the same issues at a later date? How would the results of the impeachment affect any such investigation, and would it be possible to find an impartial jury were he charged with a crime?

That’s correct. Since it’s not a legal trial, and certainly not a criminal one, nothing in the process precludes Trump from being investigated and prosecuted at a later date. For example, it appears Trump WILL be prosecuted for his illegal pressure on Georgia officials to try to “find votes” for him. That’s part of the impeachment article, but it could be the main gist of a charge brought by the GA AG or the Fulton County DA. The results of the impeachment would not affect the ability to find an impartial jury because the jury could be instructed that the not guilty verdict delivered by the president’s own party has no bearing on whether he is guilty of inciting an insurrection, as that was not a criminal proceeding.

Has there been any indication that Garland will order an investigation once confirmed? I love seeing the movement by the GA AG, but it feels wrong to just drop the insurrection issue once the impeachment trial is complete.

Garland certainly would not want to indicate anything prior to his confirmation hearing on Feb 22-23. Biden has indicated that he will not interfere one way or the other with what his Justice Department decides to do. It is a fraught political question, however. If the first year of Biden’s presidency is overwhelmed with stories about the DoJ prosecuting Trump, Biden will get a lot less done, and there is so much that needs to get done. I personally would rather see state and local DAs go after Trump and bog him down while the federal government pays attention to the pandemic, the recession, climate change, and our broken relationships with our allies.
