Three years after China began its campaign against the coronavirus and adopted a “Zero-Covid” policy, the government’s extreme measures—draconian lockdowns, economic disruption, and now deaths resulting from its prevention measures—are facing significant public protest and pushback.
Excellent piece, as always. One typo: "While the CCP’s revolution in 199 was intended to break the hold on feudalistic and traditional thinking, . . " Should be 1949. You're forgiven ;-)
I'll bet you're not alone. Not sure whether this is due more to spotty history education or that we have so much faith in Jay's factual reliability that people didn't question it. LOL
The ripple effect of the politicization of a global pandemic, coming home to roost. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. I think often of how different this all could have been if we had all come together to fight this thing, instead of it being turned into a political football by certain leaders. Thinking like that never ends well, as we're seeing now. One question, does China not have the same vaccines we have? If not, why not?
They do not have the same vaccines, theirs are notable less effective, and they are unwilling for political reasons to accept vaccines from outside sources.
Thank you for this post. The spiritual side of the Chinese culture is amazing. The political side is frightening. I wish more Chinese people could read your post.
I heard on NPR this morning that the software they developed to track COVID contacts is very effective in determining who was at the protests. I would expect that kind of "big brother" surveillance will enrage the population to a level never seen before ...

I wondered if that was the case. Shameful to put politics and pride over the well-being of your citizens, but, that seems to be the world we live in.
