Washington, D.C. lit up on Wednesday with news of a breakthrough budget bill, smartly renamed the “Inflation Reduction Act of 2022,” which had been negotiated in secret between Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) and announced publicly by the latter. Other leaders on Capitol Hill were caught off-guard by the news, and by the end of the night progressives and climate activists were cheering while the GOP was left reeling.
Call me cynical, but I think Manchin is positioning himself to not be wholly irrelevant and a pariah if the Democrats hold the House and pick up a couple seats in the Senate in November.
He is playing the game - but he sees that helping the Democrats now is pretty important. I can live with that - and I want a real majority without him ...
OMG!!! Mitch out played?! It's about time. I was so tired of seeing the Democrats trying to play rock, paper, scissors when the republicans are using AR 15s. Now this package just needs to cross the finish line. Three things will need to happen and then we can all breathe. 1. Sinema needs to stop flipping and be a solid Democrat (like Joe M appears to be this time). 2. The moderate Democrats need to be happy, because before there was nothing on the table. 3. Mitch needs to respect the play and not act like petulant child with matches ready to burn it all down out of spite. This bill benefits the many. Folks (and I mean everyone) need to vote for the benefit of the majority of the population (middle class and poor) instead of voting to deprive, voting against a popular bill out of spite, or voting for their own personal profit.
I won't hold my breath, but I will pray hard for this action and keep my fan handy to ward off the vapors should this bill pass.
We seriously need at least 2 more seats in the Senate. I'm so sick of hearing both Manchin's and Sinema's names, I could vomit. I'm sick of Democrats having to wheel and deal with members of their own party, giving up huge portions of bills, to appease these two. They're both horrible people, who deserve to be made irrelevant in November. On the other hand, having McConnell screwed over like this, makes me happy.
