This has been updated to indicate that the $50,000 Harris is offering to start-ups is in the form of a tax deduction up to $50,000 for start-up expenses, up from the current $5,000.

Expand full comment

It also needs to emphasized repeatedly that the $25,000 for first-time homebuyers also a tax credit, not a check for $25,000.

Expand full comment

Also, they have to have paid rent on time for the past 2 years.

Expand full comment

Thanks for that additional note.

Expand full comment

Is it a tax deduction, or a tax credit? If it's a tax deduction, it may actually be worth a lot less because during the startup phase, the tax bracket is often quite low.

If the government couldn’t keep track of COVID19 payments, why would it be more successful in ensuring legit business expenses of up to 25,000 or 50,000 USD? Why not open a business, run it for 3 years, then sell all the laptops and furniture to your “friend” or someone who will return items back to you?

I find it hilarious that Trump's 🤦🏻‍♀️ phrase "I have concepts of a plan" went from meme to merch on Amazon in one night

Expand full comment

Since the subject was healthcare, it was pathetic, especially since he tried to get rid of the working system without having a plan to replace it.

He and all the rest of the Repugs happily trashing one sixth of the economy! John McCain alone withstood the stupidity. It finished Ryan. Godspeed.

Clearly a multitude of people took his "concept of a plan" and not only planned but also executed on the plan. While he... did not.

Expand full comment

Well the plan he is executing that has me worried is that it seems he still has the electoral college votes, or so Robert Reich claimed in a MoveOn ad to me this morning. I do not see much discussion of this, but it is what I care about at this point. I do not think Trump will win the popular vote, but he is focusing only on Swing states. So, who has the formula to win? He still has the males 30 and under, which is a tragedy, and should be addressed. I would say both schools and tech play a big role in this.

OH. MY. DOG! I just looked on Amazon and there's pages of merchandise for this "concept." I am seriously LMFAO!

Kamala Harris CRUSHED Donald Trump. He was out matched in every phase and on every question. The last time a guy performed this badly in a debate he left the race. Donald, we’re waiting.

Forcing Trump out would help a normal political party — but the GOP isn’t a normal political party, it is a cult of personality. The GOP had a great opportunity to force Trump out in the aftermath of January 6 and was too cowardly to take advantage of that opportunity. As a result, it is now much harder for them to be rid of him.

Literally, as this t-shirt says: "Kamala removed stubborn orange stains" last night 👇🤣

I don't think there is a mechanism to replace him at this point. The ballots are all printed and waiting.

North Carolina has been ordered to redo their ballots to remove RFKjr.

Expand full comment

That was actually a different scenario. RFK wanted the line completely removed, to avoid splitting the right vote. A hypothetical Trump replacement would simply take over the existing line on the ballot (and the electors behind it), no reprinting required (although it would be nice).

Expand full comment

They should charge him for the cost of replacement.

Expand full comment

There is a mechanism, the same one Biden used. The name printed on the ballot is not who you are voting for; you are voting for electors. All Biden had to do is release the electors. The orange rapist could do the same. But of course he won't.

It's interesting that you use a rope metaphor. Last night, bleary-eyed but too full of adrenaline to sleep, I wrote a brief substack on how the NY Times managed in its late night report on the debate to, in two successive paragraphs, report on the knockout punch, then in the next say there was no knockout punch. This morning their reporting was a little more real, but still, I was appalled.

This morning I pushed a bit more cash her way, and will be doing what I can down ballot, too. Whew! What a relief that performance was.

Harris walked into the set. Walked over to trump, extended her hand to him with a smile, and took command. She never gave it up. She was AWESOME. She baited him time and time again—and he took the bait every time. The whiner whined. He wasn’t ever able to fire back with a shot that landed. And his theoretical “knockout” closing statement was a joke. Please tell me how many policy changes his useless VP Pence implemented during his term. Instead of telling people why he’s the better candidate, all he did was demonstrate what an angry small man he is. Knockout Harris!

He even tried to hide behind his podium to avoid shaking her hand, but she was ready for him. She said she knows his type. Last night, she proved it.

She knows his type...she was ready...she was confident...she owned the night!

That power move of walking over to him, basically trapping in a corner, and forcing him to shake hands was awesome. She owned the stage, she owned him, and she owned the night after that.

Expand full comment

She dominated the field, proving trump is actually just a mouthy sub.

Expand full comment

She sure did!

Expand full comment

Did you notice her introducing herself by name? He was so taken aback. I like to say that the knockout came with her inviting Americans to his rallies, but it probably really came with that handshake.

Expand full comment

That was a knife between the ribs, reminding him that she's well aware of WHY they've never met - because he was too childish to attend the Inauguration.

You know, I can be pretty dense. I needed others to tell me that was the reason. :-)

It's so unusual for that to be the case, I think most people didn't realize this was the first time they've met face to face.

Expand full comment

I was pretty surprised to hear today that they had never met face to face before last night, so her introducing herself to him by name and shaking his hand was the right and proper thing to do in the absence of someone to personally present her. Amazing power move!!

I was surprised, too! When she did it, and said her name, I felt all my nervousness about the debate just slip away all at once.

I debated watching because the sight and sound of him makes my skin crawl. I decided to watch and boy was I glad I did. Seriously, she had him at hello. Her going over, shaking his hand, (eww, she's braver than me), and introducing herself was it. He didn't make eye contact with her, at all. Her facial expressions alone were gold. And that pause...(don't say MF), I about fell out of my chair. I enjoyed this way more than I imagined. At this point those "undecideds" can take a leap somewhere. They're in it for the attention and I'm as sick of them as I am of trump and his maga cult. #LFG

It' wasn't so much brave on her part, but intimidating to him. Trump is a germophobe and seems to only use handshakes strategically. She took that power away from him.

One thing I haven't seen commented on anywhere, and I'm curious about others' thoughts on this: one the things that many of us on the left are concerned about where Trump is concerned, is how easily he is manipulated by strongman leaders. Without saying it directly, I think Harris did a masterful job of demonstrating just how easily Trump can be manipulated. I wonder if this was intentional, or if it's just a positive side effect of her strategy to bait him into performing abysmally?

I’ve seen commentary around this. If Harris could bait him in just a few sentences, he doesn’t stand a chance against foreign enemies.

Expand full comment

This would be a good time for pundits and surrogates to emphasize that point, along with reporters (and moderators of any VP debate) to start pressing JD Vance on whether he is prepared to initiate a 25th Amendment procedure against Trump.

Expand full comment

I honestly think that’s the game plan. Use TFG to get them in and then declare him incompetent and JD swoops in and we are finished… 😢

I think we need to publicize this more too. He might truly lose it (if that is even possible at this point) if he thinks JD is gonna immediately shiv him if he wins. He's already been keeping him at arm's length because JD is terrible, let's put that paranoia into overdrive.

As I understand it, 22nd Amendment wouldn't let Vance run for 2 terms as president if he serves more than 2 years of Trump's term (assuming they haven't managed to get SCOTUS to overturn it by then). So they use him as a useful idiot for as long as they can control him, then right around Jan 20 2027 (when he would 80), suddenly he's "no longer" able to fulfill the duties.

Expand full comment

Oh, I've been saying exactly that! Or there is another "attempt" that is fruitful and ta da!

Expand full comment

I think it also needs to be trumpeted from the rooftops that if this happens, JD and all of his raging misogyny and toadying up to America's tech broligarchs would become POTUS. Absolutely NOBODY wants that.

Expand full comment

Vance would in a heartbeat. His only goal is to gain power. He doesn't give a rat's ass about Trump. I always figured that if they actually won, Trump would end up "falling" down the stairs, like Ivana, or out of a window.

Expand full comment

Kamala did actually verbalize that fact - saying something to the effect that the authoritarian “leaders” like trump BECAUSE he is easily manipulated by “flattery and favor.”

Expand full comment

Yes, that's what brought up the question for me; she baited him more than she really needed to (not that im complaining), so I wondered if the actual demonstration, to back up her words, was intentional.

Expand full comment

Yes. That’s why he is such a potentially lethal weapon if ever put in charge again. He can be very easily manipulated and/or bought off. Combined with his deteriorating mental health, he poses a very serious clear & present danger to our nation & the world.

Yet on some of the channels after the debate talking to the nut job “undecided” voters, they still said they weren’t sure. Who in the F is still undecided? How do you think don the con would be good on the economy. Harris’s has a lot to do to attack the poor job of trump on the economy and easily show he did nothing other than ride the wave fed to him by Obama. Use facts and attack this on the economy or we will lose. That’s what the undecided are looking at.

Expand full comment

I'm sure some people really are undecided, or believe they are. There are some Harris platform positions (eg Gaza) that some voters won't compromise on, as is their right, and I would also hazard a guess that a lot of undecided voters are trying to decide whether to vote at all, rather than trying to decide between Trump and Harris. That being said, I suspect that one of the primary "undecided" factors is misogynoir. That is the only factor I can think of that explains why anyone who is not already either filthy rich or a MAGA loyalist would consider even for a minute voting for Trump.

Expand full comment

I have some serious doubts about these so-called undecideds. We have suffered through almost an entire decade of nonstop tRump. Harris has been on the political scene for several years. How in the hell can there truly be undecideds?!
