No apologies necessary, Jay, I appreciated the summary. Rather than Lightning Round, perhaps it was "scattered thunderstorms throughout the area, with more expected". ;-)

It’s not a burden if it helps us understand what is going on! Thank you, Jay.

They sure picked a rotten one in the end!

And to me scarier because he looks "central casting mild-mannered-Member-of-Congress." His positions on issues terrify me. He will make things sound reasonable. Does he have any relationship w/ Biden? He is such an unknown-to-me and many entity.

Brilliant analogy! I actually wrote it down in my collection of quotes. If I ever use it, you will get full credit.

Thank you, hippiechick. I collect quotes, too. Some of my best are from readers's comments on Substack, NYT, etc.

I had no idea there were different type of immunity. Hmmmm... at least Meadows still has to face Fani in Georgia. Yesterday was an incredible news day... I was exhausted from reading about it all! Who knows what today will bring...I for one would like Daddy's Little Girl Ivanka be forced to testify in New York. That should be interesting. Thank you Jay...so grateful for your concise explanations!

Expand full comment

Susan, If that happened, and Ivanka were to testify honestly, I wonder what her father’s supporters would do with THAT?Make threats to Donald’s favorite baby girl?

Expand full comment

Great question- these people are out of their minds!!!

Expand full comment

...double like.

Expand full comment

Oh that would be a dream both good one and nightmare - maybe she and her spouse could whisper through their testimony.

Expand full comment

And would he sanction those threats?

Expand full comment

Absolutely. Trump has zero loyalty to anything other than his own standing.

If that’s threatened (and it is) he’d not hesitate to throw his children, including his daughter and sex fantasy, right under the bus.

Expand full comment

But he is also ferocious about people messing with what belongs to him. She is the only proof that he is able to sire a “beautiful girl”.

Expand full comment

Wouldn’t stop him from sacrificing her to save himself. He’d still be able to point and say “Look at her. Isn’t my daughter fuckable?” if he disowned her and called her a liar to save his own skin.

Perhaps we shall see.

Once again, you've managed to put together a brilliant synopsis of the events of Republicanland. Can I just add that I remain truly mystified that Trump's supporters seem untouched by all these people saying they LIED and have committed felonies? WTF?

Yikes! No need to wish them harm; that just adds to the virtual and real violence in the world - plus the threats to so many people from MAGAworld.

I suspect we'll see Trump's entire disposition start to crumble once the reality of losing his real estate ventures set in. His businesses not only include his many residences, but represent, in his mind, the entirety of "where he lives."

It’s interesting that he has such interest in this case, where his business empire is on the line, and far less in his criminal cases it seems.

I hate to say it, but it looks like Johnson is going to get the gavel. This would be very bad news for any previous deals made by McCarthy, and extremely bad news for Ukraine. The Jordan holdouts seem to be tired of fighting the crazy maga-cult wing of the party, which now seems to be the entire party.

He did in fact. I will be writing about why this is very bad for America but there’s a chance we can use his extremism against the GOP.

Do these MAGA Republicans not understand that any statute they pass can be repealed?

“To repeal any element of an enacted law, Congress must pass a new law containing repeal language and the codified statute's location in the U.S. Code (including the title, chapter, part, section, paragraph and clause).”

Expand full comment

They are just trying to burn everything down, they have no interest in legislating or governing.

Expand full comment

They are likely primarily trying to prevent legislation from passing, rather than passing legislation of their own. Your argument still holds to some extent "Do these MAGA Republicans not understand that any statute they prevent can be passed later?" The answer is: they do, but it may be too late.

Unfortunately, a lot of legislation is time sensitive. Ukraine aid and the budget come to mind. Also, many laws come with an expiration or sunset date, and need to be renewed or they disappear into thin air. An example is the "Patriot" Act (not sure if that is up for renewal now), as well as many tax laws. That means that a sane Congress will later get bogged down by having a mountain of laws - some of them controversial - that need to be renewed.

MAGA Mike (Johnson) was just elected Speaker of the House. It appears the "rational R's" were worn out and down by the MAGA chaos. Trump took credit (of course) for "killing" Emmer and endorsing Johnson. Ugh!!! Your take, Jay?

Another great legal summation, thanks.

Has there been an estimate done on what percentage of lawyers in all of America are working in one way or another on a Trump case somewhere? Let's assume, conservatively, that the percentage is 35%. Will Congress need to pass an attorney aid package to get them through the hard times when the very last Trump case sees its final gavel? Or can we trust Republicans to just keep churning out more grifters?

🤣🤣🤣🤣

I was being too conservative in my estimate, wasn't I.
