Democrats are on a tear in courts across the country not seen since the trouncing the Trump campaign received in its post-election challenges, where the GOP lost all but one of the more than 60 cases filed.
I hate the way this is framed as "Democrates WIn". This is not about Democrats winning. Winning would be if we got more seats than we should based on the 2020 census. This is insuring FAIR REPRESENTATIVE ELECTIONS! I am sure the Supreme Court didn't vote the way they did so Democrats could "win". As usual Democrats are falling into Republican framing.
Finally! Watching this travesty of gerrymandering in NC over the last 6 years has been depressing. The Republican Party had weaponized the courts (despite losing nearly every battle) by constant appeals up to the point where the final judgement against them was put aside because it was too close to Election Day. Finally glad to see these people hoisted onto their own petard. One note: I would change: 'choose maps that were fundamentally fairer to Democratic voters' to 'choose maps that were fundamentally MORE fair to voters', making it clear that there was now equal access to representatives rather than just to Democrats.
I wish that Lady could sing, (love her voice) but, these cases came up to SCOTUS on alleged "emergency" appeals. State litigation will continue over what state Legislatures have done ( & will do ) and the role of the States' highest courts. Both cases were reviewed by Penn's & NC's Top Courts. SCOTUS did not intervene.
It certainly seems that the SCOTUS sided with democrats and frainkly democracy however it's possible that they are just kicking the can down the road so that THE PURCELL PRINCIPLE applies and illegal maps will be used in the midterms because as the principle states courts can not change election rules during the period of time just prior to an election.
Thank you for the informative explanation. I recently signed up for this newsletter and I am grateful for "fair and balanced" information instead of alternative facts.
Actually, the standard used in NY is very much like the maps drawn in NC, meaning that the districts are drawn to prevent 'splitting' of neighborhoods by ethnicity (among other metrics).

The "win" was in the courts refusing to accept the gerrymandered districts proposed by the Republican state legislature.

So the denouement of the "independent state legislatures claim" issue awaits the moment the corpulent diva gives voice?

Hmmm. I wonder if this could backfire and affect the Dems' rather partisan gerrymandering in New York?
