I beg to differ:

"In any normal, functioning government," whatever Republican Representatives remain who actually care about their constituents would vote with Democrats to elect Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker, and stop the extremist agenda - which would seriously hurt those constituents - dead in its tracks.

Let’s have a quick check about which Emperor is wearing no clothes… it’s ALWAYS projection with those on the Felon’s side of the divide.

Yeah, I had to laugh too at that Republican’s comment. Always projection.

Trump has a delusional world in which he lives. What he says is the opposite of reality. For him to claim there was “voter fraud” in the 2024 election, implying that it was the Democrats, is beyond rich. And then for him to talk about his victory as “professional, and calm” makes me want to punch him in the mouth. It was calm because Democrats do NOT storm the Capitol and claim that the election was stolen, even though they should pronounce it thus with all the gerrymandering and voter suppression efforts successfully executed by red states. Funny that Biden never said he won a “mandate” when he whipped Trump in 2020, winning by 8 million in the popular vote. Trump’s “flawless” campaign would be better called a “truthless” campaign. His gall and his absurdities are legendary, not his campaign. I must decompress before the next 4 years roll over us like a really bad tsunami.

I got a “Dammit Doll” at our gag Christmas party. I think it will be destroyed within a week.

What a fantastic idea. I am not promoting this or any other dammit doll website (since I literally just heard about it from Mark), but these look funny as all hell! https://www.dammitdolls.com/

"So while we may get a chuckle and a few satisfying shakes of our heads should the GOP implode once more on Friday, we might grow increasingly nervous should they spend weeks or even months trying to elect a Speaker."

Sure, sure, but I am thoroughly enjoying the chuckle!!

At least four years, though I have my doubts whether there will be another presidential election in my lifetime.

Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker of the House!

Expand full comment

Actually, failing to elect a Speaker will not prevent the electoral vote count. The new Electoral Count Act (passed in 2022) provides that the "presiding officer" of the House and the Senate preside. When there is no Speaker, a federal statute provides that the Clerk of the House is the "presiding officer".

Expand full comment

I’m not so sure. The new House has to actually convene and adopt the rules and agree to abide by the Electoral Count Act, if I’m not mistaken. Without a House Speaker, they can’t even call the House to order. But this is a gray area that experts are fighting over.

Expand full comment

The Clerk of the House is the Presiding Officer until the House elects a Speaker. That is the only way they can function and elect a Speaker, regardless of how long it takes.

Expand full comment

But is the Clerk authorized to preside over other business, or just the election of a speaker?

Thank you Richard and pdonoho! Even with Jay’s reservations (understandable since this is totally uncharted territory), I appreciate hearing this reading of the plain text of the ECRA and House protocol.

Well, if it helps any, my sorry TX-38 Congressman Wesley Hunt is mainly known for missing votes; so maybe he won’t show and it will cause the GOP even more worries. BTW, I think he’s absent so much because he was caught spending campaign money on himself for personal items. The Ethics Committee “cleared” him but won’t release the report!

What a lying, thieving jackass. The only positive about living in Texas is my rep is a long time, honest Democrat. I live in a small sea of blue surrounded by the ugly color of red.
