Thanks for the digging. I’m always creeped out when dudes like this spend so much time on their knees using god as a cudgel. He smells smarmy and sickeningly slimy.

Smary & sleazy are two words that always come to mind whenever I see him.

For me, it's heebie jeebies. Lol

Pamela Klein's avatar

Me too! I call him Moses Mike Johnson! He’s so GROSS!

Was it not Lady Macbeth who scrubbed and scrubbed and said, "Out damned bank accounts! Out damned podcasts! Out damned websites!"

Not sure that's exactly what Shakespeare wrote, but close enough for the year of our lord 2023.

Where do these people COME from? Oh, I know--1531 more or less. Time travel is alive and well.

Larry Pointer's avatar

LMAO! I just came here to quote Lady Macbeth after reading about all their scrubbing!

The GOP House members, exhausted and in a hurry to end the debacle in which they were embroiled, "pinned the tail on the donkey" and chose their new Speaker without exercising anything faintly resembling due diligence. You wouldn't buy a car or send your child to a college without doing a GREAT DEAL more research than House Republicans did in choosing Mike Johnson.

DG's avatar

I've done more research choosing undergarments than these Rethuglicsn bozos did.

Jim's avatar

I’ve done more research choosing toilet paper. I settled on “Who Gives A Crap”. Yes, this is the company’s name. https://us.whogivesacrap.org/pages/about-us

That's what happens when you let Matt Gaetz throw a firebomb without having a plan. Usually, the candidates for speaker have been vetted for months if not years, and there usually also is a fairly deep bench of candidates.

Dave Edgar's avatar

I will never again write that man's name without an addendum: he is henceforth to be known as "Matt Gaetz' punchable face."

Anti-Social Socialist's avatar

I identify him as "the weirdly oversized head of Matt Gaetz". (Edited to add - or "Great Value Robbie Rotten".)

Dave Edgar's avatar

LOL! That works too. I'm just not sure I could resist the punch if it ever came up...

or perhaps they got exactly what they wanted and shoved it through before anyone could derail it. Seems exactly the type of speaker they want going into 2024 elections. You know, one who won't honor anything the voters choose unless it's what he would choose.

Douglas Brown's avatar

It is not impossible that you are correct. In general though, I find that "Hanlon's razor" is adequate in explaining human failings of this sort. "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Pam McCullough's avatar

Republicans doing due diligence? Has that ever happened?

SCS - Michigan's avatar

Republicans > due diligence

Oxy > moron

Andrea R's avatar

True but who exactly should they have picked with more research? They’re all awful and Trump sycophants. Maybe Fitzpatrick and Massie have some very mild principles for voting against BBB (and being generous here) but who else is not a total scumbag? The end result would have been the same with anybody. Possibly it’s better that they picked somebody with skeletons in their closet as it gives us something to bring to the public’s attention if any of it is verified.

Jaime Ramirez's avatar

Republicans do virtually no research on their prospects for a position. All that matters to them is fidelity to their russorepublochristofascist agenda.

Barbara Williams's avatar

THEY WERE DESPERATE 😂😂😂💦

Pearl Geffers's avatar

In fairness, what would due diligence accomplish with this lot?

Once again, we need independent press to reveal the truth so we can have a democracy. Popular Opinion Substack today is discussing why the Mainstream press is spreading Mike Johnson's lies. https://popular.info/p/why-reporters-play-dumb/comments?reaction=%E2%9D%A4

We need a free and independent press. Thanks for pointing us in the direction of the truth!

Hmmm...don’t drug lords have a cash only business model? If you tear down the drywall in his house, will you find stacks of $$$$$$$$?

Jay Kuo's avatar

We’ll soon see the real reason I hope!

And Al Capone never kept anything in his name either, although he probably needed a better bookkeeper to keep double books since the Feds finally got him on tax evasion. I more likely scenario is similar to some of these 1-800 evangelical preachers that funnel the dollars into religious, tax exempt, organizations and LLC’s. Start digging into Delaware corporations and Cayman Islands accounts. Mike’s a smart lawyer, not a megaphone Molotov cocktail throwing egomaniac like TFG and Jordon.

Thoroughly nasty piece of work! Threatening to “tar & feather” Gavin Newsom is pure evil! 👿

Tom S's avatar

Unless Congress is paying him in cash, he exceeds the $1000 threshold on his accounts every single payday.

Kevin's avatar

No, no, don't you get it. He wants to feel close to the unbanked poor in the country, and takes his pay check to a payday lender to pay off last month's debt. (/s in case that wasn't clear).

Linda McCaughey's avatar

I know! I know! He gives it all to The Church.

Chris Ortolano's avatar

And no matter what they find, no matter how bad it is; maga-republicans will not care. Even if what they find is criminal, they simply won't care.

My head is exploding! These people are like termites, and they continue to come out of the woodwork. The infestation continues to get worse instead of better☹️ I have truly given up on them having or growing a conscience. Sigh....

Colby Boss's avatar

Is this why he is hellbent on defunding the IRS, to avoid paying over due taxes??

Jerry Tinianow's avatar

No, this is completely innocent. He just believes that the ill-gotten gains of tax cheats will naturally trickle down to the little people. It's all about helping them!

Dave Edgar's avatar

Nope. ALL the GQP wants this, because the donors to their super PACs don't wanna pay taxes. Every single Republican president from Reagan onward has gotten through a tax cut for the wealthy - it's a permanent fixture in the party's platform. And even when Bush I was forced to levy new taxes, it was not on the rich. They have been trying to destroy the IRS and the tax system for decades. They're so close they can taste it.

This is a perfect example of why we should financially support independent journalists. Uncovering this stuff and presenting it for the rest of us takes a lot of time. Thank you, Jay, and thanks to the organizations stopping the info scrubbing.

Like cats in a litter box, the Johnson’s sure have been busy covering their 💩 when there’s this much to hide there is surely something to discover. And I’m quite sure we’ll learn about it. Gross. These people and their dictatorial beliefs scare me to death.

Old Man's avatar

I hear litter boxes are in short supply, due to so many installed in elementary schools./s

Since the federal government apparently pays by direct deposit, the matter of bank accounts ought to be easy to figure out. The rest is, I would guess cynically, offshore.

Marc Reeve's avatar

Nah, he seems like the type of guy to be a gold bug. I bet he's got a stash of gold bars/coins somewhere for the End Times.

Joyce M. Shaw's avatar

I had a cousin happy to trade greenback American dollars in for bright shinny gold which he buried in his yard. After his untimely death by a gun toting roommate, someone later used a metal detector and apparently found the stash. My question to him was why are these people so willing to take good ol' American dollars for gold--why aren't the people selling gold keeping the gold?

Diane Arden's avatar

My first thought after reading this story!

Will Devine's avatar

The one part of Johnson's (or his staff's) explanations that rings true: "At the time of the Speaker’s election to Congress, Michael was an adult with a family of his own. He asked not to be involved in their new public life." It tracks that a now grown-up Michael would not want to be associated with "dad."

Caroline Durbin's avatar

Wow! I can’t wait until the unearthed truth of this shit show of a family! 😂

Terry's avatar

The last item Jay touched on. Having zero assets. No checking accounts. Is WEIRD. The man has money. Seems he’s doing Trump math with his assets.

Which would explain that before anything else, the new Speaker put forward a bill to significantly defund the IRS. Sus. Very sus.

Jerry Tinianow's avatar

"I'm not a racist. Some of my best sons are black!"

Pam McCullough's avatar

Best sons and grandchildren (as was mentioned he has a "family of his own") that never appear in any family photos.

Pretty hard to believe they have a “good relationship”.
