Thanks for the digging. I’m always creeped out when dudes like this spend so much time on their knees using god as a cudgel. He smells smarmy and sickeningly slimy.

Was it not Lady Macbeth who scrubbed and scrubbed and said, "Out damned bank accounts! Out damned podcasts! Out damned websites!"

Not sure that's exactly what Shakespeare wrote, but close enough for the year of our lord 2023.

Where do these people COME from? Oh, I know--1531 more or less. Time travel is alive and well.

The GOP House members, exhausted and in a hurry to end the debacle in which they were embroiled, "pinned the tail on the donkey" and chose their new Speaker without exercising anything faintly resembling due diligence. You wouldn't buy a car or send your child to a college without doing a GREAT DEAL more research than House Republicans did in choosing Mike Johnson.

That's what happens when you let Matt Gaetz throw a firebomb without having a plan. Usually, the candidates for speaker have been vetted for months if not years, and there usually also is a fairly deep bench of candidates.

I will never again write that man's name without an addendum: he is henceforth to be known as "Matt Gaetz' punchable face."

or perhaps they got exactly what they wanted and shoved it through before anyone could derail it. Seems exactly the type of speaker they want going into 2024 elections. You know, one who won't honor anything the voters choose unless it's what he would choose.

It is not impossible that you are correct. In general though, I find that "Hanlon's razor" is adequate in explaining human failings of this sort. "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

True but who exactly should they have picked with more research? They’re all awful and Trump sycophants. Maybe Fitzpatrick and Massie have some very mild principles for voting against BBB (and being generous here) but who else is not a total scumbag? The end result would have been the same with anybody. Possibly it’s better that they picked somebody with skeletons in their closet as it gives us something to bring to the public’s attention if any of it is verified.

Republicans do virtually no research on their prospects for a position. All that matters to them is fidelity to their russorepublochristofascist agenda.

Once again, we need independent press to reveal the truth so we can have a democracy. Popular Opinion Substack today is discussing why the Mainstream press is spreading Mike Johnson's lies. https://popular.info/p/why-reporters-play-dumb/comments?reaction=%E2%9D%A4

We need a free and independent press. Thanks for pointing us in the direction of the truth!

And Al Capone never kept anything in his name either, although he probably needed a better bookkeeper to keep double books since the Feds finally got him on tax evasion. I more likely scenario is similar to some of these 1-800 evangelical preachers that funnel the dollars into religious, tax exempt, organizations and LLC’s. Start digging into Delaware corporations and Cayman Islands accounts. Mike’s a smart lawyer, not a megaphone Molotov cocktail throwing egomaniac like TFG and Jordon.

Nope. ALL the GQP wants this, because the donors to their super PACs don't wanna pay taxes. Every single Republican president from Reagan onward has gotten through a tax cut for the wealthy - it's a permanent fixture in the party's platform. And even when Bush I was forced to levy new taxes, it was not on the rich. They have been trying to destroy the IRS and the tax system for decades. They're so close they can taste it.

I had a cousin happy to trade greenback American dollars in for bright shinny gold which he buried in his yard. After his untimely death by a gun toting roommate, someone later used a metal detector and apparently found the stash. My question to him was why are these people so willing to take good ol' American dollars for gold--why aren't the people selling gold keeping the gold?

The one part of Johnson's (or his staff's) explanations that rings true: "At the time of the Speaker’s election to Congress, Michael was an adult with a family of his own. He asked not to be involved in their new public life." It tracks that a now grown-up Michael would not want to be associated with "dad."

The last item Jay touched on. Having zero assets. No checking accounts. Is WEIRD. The man has money. Seems he’s doing Trump math with his assets.

Which would explain that before anything else, the new Speaker put forward a bill to significantly defund the IRS. Sus. Very sus.
