At the State of the Union address, Biden roped Republicans into publicly denying they were going after Social Security and now he’s backed them into a corner on border security. Not bad for an 80 year old demented guy 😂

I wonder what he’ll deliver around immigration, especially if House Republicans tank the deal or are still holding it back.

You saved the purest gold for the last line, Jay. And I'm waiting in the greatest anticipation for the SOTU address, just to see what Biden's lesson of the day will be this time!

I wonder the same. It infuriates me that extremists have so much power. I hope that Biden can find a way and that it’s not too little, too late. I’m also concerned about funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan. These extremists don’t seem to care that they are putting us all at great risk by their selfish actions.

They have so much power because they have never been indicted for their parts in Jan 6. Significant involvement in an attempted coup--which they knew full well was what it was and which they wanted it to be. The loudest among them now, are the most guilty and should have been in jail along time ago.

A friend of mine called it a "Schrodinger's Biden" - he is, simultaneously, a totally demented old guy who doesn't know where his feet are and a demonic mastermind with Svengaly-esque control over all the media and judicial system, directing them to abuse Trump.

A friend of mine says that "someone is obviously pulling the strings behind the scenes. Have you ever heard him talk, he never makes any sense. He has obvious signs of dementia which is why they never let him talk after the sun goes down or take questions". I'm honestly exhausted by it all and just didn't feel like getting into it except to say "Have you heard trump talk?" And she is so convinced he's not the one doing any of the "presidential things" that it wasn't worth my energy.

I have hopes that Biden will solve this crisis too. It is a crisis thanks to Republicans refusing to discuss legislation for years and years. I see Republicans imploding over everything they take on. First of all, wisely pointing out Biden's experience, and I am all for experience when it comes to solving complex problems. You get new ideas and experience together and you get a great team, although there are no ideas for problem solving coming from the Republican party, just hatred and sound bites. Still, I am hopeful because Biden and the Dems have set a track record of overcoming all sorts of obstacles. We got our military nominations, our ambassador appointments, our budget and a huge climate bill cleverly disguised as a put America back to work bill. So, the border taken on gets solved. There is a plan in place, and how many days of grandstanding can MAGA Mikey Johnson stand up with before he too implodes? I think once a bill gets passed, the talking points will have to be that even the East Germans and North Korea did/do not have as tight a border as the USA! But we know what happened in East Germany! Perhaps we will be annexing Mexico too, or offering to buy it out. That would be a theme that could curl the toes of the Republican party. Buy out a poorer neighboring country where our borders with them have shifted over time.

Expand full comment

I disagree, though there is some truth in what you say. The border problem simply cannot be solved because too many places in the world, not just south of our border, have come apart. Half a million refugees from Africa, he Mid East, etc, in addition to those from Venezuela, Colombia and other points south, are now traversing the Darian Gap, all hoping to enter the USA. Fleecing refugees is now great business for criminals. I think there is too much turmoil to successfully "manage" at this point. Citizens worldwide are seeing this and demanding secure (closed) borders.

I am suggesting that Biden will find a way to get Republicans to both sign the border agreement, whatever is in it and release funds for more border control, judges, people to work at the border, and release funds for supporting the Ukraine war, and the crisis in the Middle East.

I am in a city in Germany where 50% of the population is over the age of 60. The city itself is standing by its strong immigration policy, but there are people here who see that the German immigration system needs overhauling and those who do not want immigrants. I suggest that many of these are people who just listen to soundbites and do not think the situation through. We need immigrants in the USA too. Our country would be aging like populations in Europe and Asia are, if we did not have a robust immigration program. In fact, last year in the Economist they said, US had 10 mil job vacancies and only 5 mil American who were available to work. We need skilled and unskilled immigrants, from all over the world.

My mother and husband are from Germany, my primary care doctor in the US is from India, my dentist is from Ghana, my plumber is from Czechia, my electrician from Serbia, my neighbors are from Israel, Egypt, Mexico, China, Finland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Ireland, England, Scotland, Switzerland, Somalia, Ethiopia, Turkey, Jordan, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Haiti, Cuba, Brazil, etc... That is because we live in a University community that draws people from all over the world. Their children are often multilingual just as they are. All of them are American in their own way. A Field Prize winning mathematician from Kiev Ukraine, a Syrian filmmaker.

Citizens worldwide are demanding border closure because there are political leaders that scare them by blaming the problems in their countries on immigrants and refugees. Yes. ISIS has given people pause, though the EU, like the USA has a lot of right wing terrorists too. In fact here, they are the bigger problem.

In my teaching graduate program, I concentrated on multilingual and multicultural education. I think we can do that really well here. Germany needs to work on better integrating immigrant children, although I know schools where they do a good job. Some refugees and immigrants will be a problem just as some citizens are, but most want to make a better life for themselves and their children.

Several years ago my students and I made crafts and sold them to raise money to help bring Syrian refugee families to our community. So many local people and organizations came together to help them, and it turned into a permanent community organization. Now they are stepping up to help the ongoing refugees from the Middle East, and newer ones from Venezuela that are being bused to Chicago and surrounds from Texas.

https://hprp.clubexpress.com/

People in our local organization are helping with language learning (the advantage of a multilingual community, helping people at doctor and dentist appointments, and enrolling their children in school. Helping them find jobs once the paperwork comes through allowing them to do that. I think we see many models of how to help people integrate in, and my community has a good model. I know other areas of the city and suburbs are reaching out too.

When immigrants from Syria and Ukraine first came to Germany it was very welcoming. I have friends who are teaching adults job skills who are coming from countries where they have never been to school. I have friends teaching adults German. It is hard. But, Germany has a huge job shortage of both high and low skilled people.

Border walls have been somewhat successful, see North Korea, but those and the East German border walls cannot keep everyone in. There are some proven strategies for managing the border, and until we implement them we cannot know whether or not they will be successful. Most places do not have good strategies, they are adequate.

Biden is indeed the elder statesman with much valuable experience. Is he perfect? No. There is so much we don’t know-and shouldn’t know- about the state of operations and in the world. And if the border was an easy solution we’d have one already. But, Biden is a decent human being. He has surrounded himself with smart capable people who he’s working with to realize the best possible outcome for ALL Americans. One of my progressive friends was furious at Biden for that "close the border" proposal. I said "You do realize he KNOWS they're going to say no, right? Biden could propose mowing all asylum seekers down with AR-15s at this point, and the House GOP would still say no." He's calling their bluff, and he's doing it brilliantly.

They are in the trenches working and listening to Fox news. Your advice could not be more important...even locally and especially school boards.

One hopeful thought: if Biden beats Trump a second time, it should diminish much of T’s influence. A lot of R’s already want to move on, even those who don’t yet say so publicly. Though the extremist machinery would still persist in red gerrymandered states.

Amen to that Jay. My entire life (I'm 62) the immigration system has needed work. My own European ancestors came here when all they had to do to get in was be healthy. My Mexican great grandparents came when all they had to do was show they could hold a job. This business of making it impossible to come into this country when we need workers - its just wrong on so many levels.

Expand full comment

You are right. But, to be fair, back then the immigration system was heavily biased (and to some extent it still is). For instance, there was the Chinese Exclusion Act that not just banned Asians from immigrating, but even tried to strip US-native-born people of native-born origin of their citizenship (SCOTUS nixed that). And who can forget the atrocious Japanese internment camps.

But you are right, for those of the "right" ancestry immigration used to be easier.

I think you can bet the farm that if Republicans reject the bipartisan bill Democrats will spend every minute between now and the election informing the American people how Republicans deceived them on their position on the border, and exactly how this bill would have solved a lot of problems, but Republicans rejected it. And not just the border issues, either. Because Republicans lied to everyone about their committment to fixing the border issues, Ukraine is running out of weaponry to hold off Russian agressors, Israel and Taiwan aren't receiving aid for their defense.

I think it's safe to say that if Republicans reject this bill, they will lose dramatically. If they accept it, Trump's biggest whine will be removed. All because the President that they have consistently written off as too old and mentally incompetent is out-witting them at every turn, and they don't even realize what's happening.
