Michael, my mother just got diagnosed with Alzheimers. Her doctor did an MRI. After her 90th birthday she had noticed significant memory loss, as did we all. Anyway, her doctor saw signs of early Alzheimers. Again, this is a brain change, and can be identified by an MRI. They do not hurt. So, the trick is to get the MRI if there is cause to believe it can be revealing.

Several of us have postulated that in comments to The Status Quo before.
