To be fair, they did the bailing out because it was in service of a Democratic Senate and a Democratic president. Passing legislation was in the Democratic Party self interest.
The incentive structure is now very different with having a Republican president and Senate. And the Democrats care very much about upholding popular laws and programs, and about upholding democracy itself.
Wish that were true, but Hakeem Jeffries is a bit too "instatooshonal" for my liking, and I can easily see him aiding Li'l Mikey to prevent the "Freedum Caucus" from throwing sand in the gears...downside is Jeffries loses considerable leverage and makes needless concessions...after all, this IS the Democratic Party, who always keeps that towel at the ready to throw in.
Not even a concept of thoughts and prayers for Johnson from this boy. He is a hugely destructive and negative influence on this country's public affairs; I unequivocally reject his dogma and domineering, evangelical aspirations. He is beneath my contempt and gets the back of my hand (to use a much more polite phrase than what originally came to mind).
Scummy li'l weasel jumped all over the "Ban Sara McBride from the bathrooms!" train set in motion by the equally rebarbative Nancy Mace...loathsome git forever burrowing up tRump's sodden bum.
'Scummy li'l weasel' sits well with me - made me smile. I don't see resemblance to either of those mentioned, but I always think he looks air-brushed ...
Yeah, I was wondering about the slowness of these races but have been too lazy to look it up. Easy explanation, too. I guess the Republicans could try to challenge them, but they'd have to challenge the ones they won, too, since it's the same process that bogs things down.
As a former acolyte of Alfie, I must say that it’s “What, me worry?” That comma makes all the difference. And it’s “Alfred E. Neuman.” Two “n’s” make all the difference! Don’t hate me. I had a bisque bust of Alfie when I was a kid. Also, please don’t compare A.E.N. to Mike Johnson. 🤮
"A concept of thoughts and prayers for you, Speaker Johnson." I'm WHEEZING. I literally went straight to wheezing and crying stage laughter, it caught me so off-guard.
I hope the Dem’s don’t bail the Repubs on anything. Just sit back and let them work their “historic mandate.” Nobody’s fault but theirs if they don’t pass a budget. Will it be painful? Oh, you betcha. But maybe that is what is needed. ANY help to the Repubs is just enabling them. Let them be hoisted on their own petards, as someone below says.
Of course it will be a difficult decision to let the Republicans fail...because Democrats will always think about the impacts on the country. But honestly, we've bailed them out SO MANY TIMES. Do we think they would EVER bail us out? I'm ready for us to suffer the short-term consequences of not doing so. They might be devastating for a lot of people. But this is what people voted for...so it's time to face up to the consequences of their actions.
Evelyn, I agree. You’re right in everything you say. the Repubs would never bail Dems out. People voted, and the GOP is going to act - and time for those actions to have consequences. It is hard to sit and watch failure that will hurt people, but I think it is the only way. Otherwise, nothing will stop them.
It’s pretty ironic that anyone on the right would complain about voting irregularities when there’s mounting evidence that their Orange Boss was elected thanks to some pretty suspect vote counts. Look up “bullet ballots”, for example.
Normally I’m not one prone to following conspiracy theories. But I experienced my first irregularity since I began voting in 1990.
At the polling place (in California, in a very liberal county where I’ve lived for decades), I was informed that “you’ve already voted.” That’s simply not possible as I’ve never voted by mail. Luckily I was able to override the mistake (or was it?) by filling out a form.
I know this is anecdotal and probably the result of a system or human error. But I find it incredibly hard to believe 10 million fewer Dems showed up for Kamala than Biden in 2020. The statistics on a county by county basis show some wildly improbable outcomes.
If there were any cheating at the registration or tabulation levels, I sincerely hope it gets discovered and aired about before January 20.
I was very disappointed that Kamala lost, and I hadn't expected it, either. But she lost fair and square. First of all, your numbers are wrong. She got 7 million fewer votes than Biden did in 2020, while Trump gained about 2.5 million votes compared with 2020. Both are easily explained by collective amnesia. Voters, low-information voters in particular, simply forgot how bad Trump 1 was. Combined with voter discontent about high prices, and Gaza, that easily explains the loss.
Those "bullet votes" are firmly out in conspiracy theory land. As the expression goes, extraordinary claims call for extraordinary evidence.
Spot on. I’ve said similar and until there’s hard evidence, I’m going with we were screwed out of a decent president by eggs, gas and probably some of our neighbors.
And years of disinformation via Fox, Newsmax, Limbaugh; and, most important, the flood of disinformation from Russia that played a huge part in the Democrats losing the election. And few people are talking about that.
PBS Newshour did a piece on how tfg went on a number of podcasts and Tik-tok interviews to reach young male voters who typically are low-turnout voters. It made me wonder, could many of these "bullet ballots" be these guys, who voted for tfg (because, toxic masculinity) but not the rest of the ticket?
That goes to the heart of the "bullet ballot" claim; supposedly in this election, the number is much higher than usual. For my taste, that's far too flimsy to make a case out of, though.
Meanwhile, let's all enjoy a little Thanksgiving schadenfreude, as we see a growing number of panicky posts from Republican voters about not knowing what Department of Education does or that ACA and Obamacare were the same thing. Plus, the special holiday addition of very puzzled Trump voters, whose families no longer speak to them.
Last week at the Post Office I was in line behind a man crowing about “voting to get rid of that damn Obamacare so all the money can go to the better ACA”. People were glancing at each other, wondering who was going to tell him they are the same thing.
I caught up with him in the parking lot and told him. He didn’t believe me. I said he didn’t have to believe me & I kindly suggested he search/look up both terms. He said I was lying for fun. 🙄 I kept my tone even & kind and said what he thought of me didn’t matter to me at all but he really should look up both terms since his “entire family had the better ACA”. I walked away.
Sadly, I can’t count how many times I’ve explained to people that the ACA and Obamacare are the same thing. (I live in Central Indiana.)
That last line almost made me spit out my tea and an unexpected guffaw!! “A concept of thoughts and prayers”! INSPIRED! That alone will get me through my day of baking and prep for tomorrow!! Thank you for that boost of energy!!
My fingers are crossed that Johnson doesn't go to Trump with the notion of doing an end run around Congress by adjourning it and then letting Mike hand the executive his wish list. Legislation by fiat would be the end of the government as we know it. I would expect to see a slew of lawsuits against it, but what this SCOTUS would decide is hard to predict.
The Dems better not bail out Johnson again when he needs votes. He is a dangerous Christian Nationalist behind those preppy 👓. Get him gone.
~Ooo-ee-oo, he looks a bit like Buddy Holly! Whoa-oh, but charismatic as a rock!~
Not often I get hit by inspiration this hard XD
I wish dems find a pair of ovaries for xmas...
The winner in District 45 is Tran, so you can relax.

Yeah it’s a whole different ballgame now!
He won't need them. He got the Motion to Vacate threshold moved from one vote to nine votes. This will make it easier for him to work with Democrats.
I’m not sure that rule will still be in place when he goes for re-election as Speaker. We’ll have to see.
I was wondering about that piece of things. Why would they’ve changed the rules with only a few weeks left for this congress?
🤮🤮🤮🤮
Wish that were true, but Hakeem Jeffries is a bit too "instatooshonal" for my liking, and I can easily see him aiding Li'l Mikey to prevent the "Freedum Caucus" from throwing sand in the gears...downside is Jeffries loses considerable leverage and makes needless concessions...after all, this IS the Democratic Party, who always keeps that towel at the ready to throw in.
This!
Amen!!!
“A concept of thoughts and prayers” - I love it! I’m going to use it a lot from now on, if that’s ok with you!

Did a spit-take on that one, too!
Came here to say this! :)
Ditto!!
Every penny I pay you is worth it. Real information. Been searching for info on the House races and here it is! Thanks, Jay!
Yeah, I was wondering about the slowness of these races but have been too lazy to look it up. Easy explanation, too. I guess the Republicans could try to challenge them, but they'd have to challenge the ones they won, too, since it's the same process that bogs things down.

His name is Little Johnson.
Or Trump’s little johnson.
😂
Let’s use the Rubio model - how about L’il Johnson?
😆
Rob Nelson, thank you for”Little Johnson.” For some reason unknown to me I can’t ever remember his actual first name. Mental block?
Some call him “Holy Moses” Mike. 🤣
Sara, You are most welcome. Little mind, little charm, little intellect.
Jay Kuo: I hope we may in the near future, say, 2027, see the Statesman, Hakeem Jeffries, as House Speaker, Third in line to the Presidency.
Michael Johnson and his sheepish grin embody the spirit of Alfred E. Neumann, Mad Magazine, "What me worry?"
Mr. Johnson can still play his Alfred E. Neumann role as minority leader.
OH SNAP! That’s who speaker Johnson reminds me of Alfred E. himself!
Also Howdy Doody.
I have always believed Howdy and Alfred were brothers separated at birth.
Perfect. I couldn’t place that face!

Agree completely.
Hoisted by their own petards.
In and of itself, this shows how weak the GOP really is at the federal level.
Perfect!!
If Republicans demand a recount in California, Democrats must demand a recount in the presidential race for all swing states.
They won’t.
It’s pretty ironic that anyone on the right would complain about voting irregularities when there’s mounting evidence that their Orange Boss was elected thanks to some pretty suspect vote counts. Look up “bullet ballots”, for example.

I think it bears looking at how many people vote top of the ticket and nothing else in every election?
That goes to the heart of the "bullet ballot" claim; supposedly in this election, the number is much higher than usual. For my taste, that's far too flimsy to make a case out of, though.
That was my thought.
This news out of California is the best I’ve heard all week! They have to wrap it up by Dec 3, right?
California has 30 days after the election to finish counting the ballots that arrived on time.
A little good news before the long holiday weekend.
Meanwhile, let's all enjoy a little Thanksgiving schadenfreude, as we see a growing number of panicky posts from Republican voters about not knowing what Department of Education does or that ACA and Obamacare were the same thing. And what exactly is a tariff anyway, dumbskull.
I think it's Spanish for "pick you own fucking lettuce".
Just guessing.
According to Google Translate thats "elige tu propia maldita lechuga".
And don't ask me to say it.
So, I was close.
Speaking of self sabotage…
Last week at the Post Office I was in line behind a man crowing about “voting to get rid of that damn Obamacare so all the money can go to the better ACA”. People were glancing at each other, wondering who was going to tell him they are the same thing.

How do these people feed themselves?
Sorry. Not really.

Thank you so much for the detailed analysis.

Legislation by fiat would be the end of the government as we know it. I would expect to see a slew of lawsuits against it, but what this SCOTUS would decide is hard to predict.
I read somewhere that BOTH the House & the Senate would have to go into recess for 10 days, not just the House.
