"And make no mistake, violent crime was up under Donald Trump," Walz continued. "That's not even counting the crimes he committed!"

THIS right here, this is the hammer, when the crowd roared it's approval of this statement by Walz. I laughed so hard I scared my cats. It was even funny to watch Harris behind him, trying to look Presidential and keep a straight face; she failed, in a good way, and finally smiled. Wow. I have not been this excited since 2008, and, in reality, I'm actually even more excited!

the only thing funnier was his line about Vance getting off the couch to debate him

“See what I did there?” He said. I did.

In my mind I could "see" him playfully elbowing his children and saying that after a lame "Dad Joke." I know he does it, because I do that with my children. What a great human.

I had exactly the same thought!!

Did you see the PSA he did with his daughter about hands-free driving? It's a hoot!

Watching Kamala stifle her laugh when he said that was priceless. And then again with the "crimes he committed" line.

How many times has Joe Biden looked out via a camera at us and said, “It’s about you!” Thanks for highlighting that message.

Expand full comment

We actually owe all this to Joe. He started by beating tRUMP in 2020 and giving us Harris as VP. He has now proven, not only what a goddamn decent human being he is, but by doing what a true democratic leader does — passing the torch to someone eminently capable. Thank you Joe, for giving us Kamala Harris. Thank you Kamala, for bringing us Tim. I have faith and joy once again. And a lot of ugly, but VERY happy, crying. #HarrisWalz2024 #TedLasso #Believe

@Elizabeth Winthrop Alsop, I’m sure the doting, great-grandfatherly, doddering, Contra-Aryan, DEMOCRAT President, who is kind, gentle and wise, had “willingly stepped down” and “hand the torch” to not only the racially indeterminate, vacuous, goofy (there, I said it!) VP, but “to all of us,” especially after the Deep Democrat Cabal offered him $100 million for a Joe Biden Presidential Library, and full pardons for him and every member of his crime syndicate family. To sweeten the deal, the Deep Democrat Cabal also told him that unless he stepped down, the next nerdy shooter they hire will not miss, as Crooks fracked up and missed “Agent Orange.”

This was an offer Biden could not, and dared not refuse. Thank you Mr. President, and Godspeed.

That was deeply weird.

Seriously, what the hell did I just read?

Expand full comment

@insert_something_creative, you just read a snippet of what few, if any, of us doctrinaire Left-Liberal, Climate Change Religionist, Democrat Loyalist have ever read (or believe). Namely, THE TRUTH.

Maybe it’s time we at least hear what these Conservative, Republican lying, hateful scumbags have to say. We don’t have to agree with their lies and distortions, but at least we can take the moral high ground, and say we gave them “equal time,” and respected their so-called First Amendment right to free speech, yes?

We will certainly honor and please President Biden when we do this. What do you say?

Expand full comment

Are you a Russian bot or just a MAGAt?

Expand full comment

Just an FYI, no one who is actually a liberal speaks this way lol so you're not really fooling anyone. You must be deep down the right-wing rabbit hole to think there is a Democratic cabal, that Biden was offered $100 million to step down, or that his family is a crime syndicate (that's the Trumps you're thinking of). That's not THE TRUTH.

Among other things, this is a dead giveaway you're full of shit because, again, this is how right-wingers think liberals talk about ourselves and it's comically absurd: "Doctrinaire Left-Liberal, Climate Change Religionist, Democrat Loyalist"

We also would never describe VP Harris as "vacuous" or "racially indeterminate" because that makes no sense. Why is it so hard for you guys to comprehend that bi-racial people exist?

@Clay Bennett, I thank you for reading my reply as does J.D. “Weird” Vance.

@Alton Lee, I couldn't tell whether you were using quotation marks for emphasis or sarcasm, so I couldn't guess whether this reflected your support for Richard Nixon or Bernie Sanders. I recommend you edit for two kinds of readers: those who take everything at face value and those who draw inferences from every gap or contradiction. I'd rather understand your point.

Expand full comment

Just report and block, not worth anyone’s precious time here!

Expand full comment

@Clay Bennett, excuse me, but what quotation marks did I use, except to enclose Bernie Sanders’ campaign battlecry, “Feel the Bern”? And I assure you that my support for Mr. Nixon and Mr. Sanders is undying.

I also assure you that I always try to write as plainly and concisely as I can. As such, I think you can take my writing (or “prattle,” as some consider) at “face value,” and you need not expend excess cerebral energy or effort to “draw inferences from every gap or contradiction,” in my writings, as hopefully I include none in my writings.

Just the same, I thank you for your reply, and for your seemingly helpful, though misplaced, advice.

And lest I forget, it’s not “@Alton Lee,” as you got wrong, but “@Alton Yee.”

I was JUST thinking this today - how the coaches are the ones who inspire and empower us, and it's no coincidence that shows like Ted Lasso and Friday Night Lights are the ones that give you Maximum Feelz 4eva. You can't work directly with young people like he did and not be able to hold both small-town and liberal values simultaneously, and that's what saves us. I really wanted Sec Pete but this choice actually is the best given the biases of the general population! I am very excited for the election - I want a resounding victory so that we never have to see or hear the mean spiritedness ever again!!!!!!!!

Expand full comment

I'm hopeful that Pete will be Secretary of State. And then he'll be our President in the future.

Expand full comment

That was my first thought also; however I think that if Blinken will stay that would be good transition. But Pete does need another step on the way to the top. I guess we stay tuned, and if Secy of State opens up, absolutely!

That was my response too. He is so attuned to diplomacy and negotiation that he is a natural for that position.

While I like Pete a lot I saw him as a distraction because of the biases against him and his family. It's not just MAGA that has those biases. Unfortunately, there are some Democrats who still hold such values as well. He would still be a great asset as part of her administration though.

As a Texan, reared in a small town VERY similar to West Point, NE (birthplace) and Valentine, NE(hometown) for Tim Walz, I am the son in law of a small town Texas teacher, coach and school superintendent (like Tim Walz’s dad was in Nebraska). I agree 1 million percent with everything you said! My father in law was born in 1925, and at age 19 was a Marine Corps veteran of the most bloody battle in Marine Corps history, Iwo Jima. He loved kids, he loved people, he was a good and decent man, and I get Wayne Cornelius(my late father in law) vibes from Tim Walz. That is a VERY good thing. I honestly think it will take “normal” to beat the cancer that is Trump and Trumpism. I was fearful Harris and Shapiro could be mischaracterized as the R’s are so good at doing as evil “liberals” and “Communists” and “coasters.” To do that with Walz is ludicrous on its face, and I think the normies in the heartland and elsewhere may finally begin to see through the cruelty and evil that is Trump.

Great column and I pray the fever we are living through will finally break and we will return to sanity. We can all only hope and pray and work to see this happen.

Jay--I am an Emergency Room doctor in Minneapolis. I drove through the day time demonstrations and the night time fire and smoke to and from work. As did so many of us docs and nurses. If anyone needs to hear first hand testimony to how well Walz did on such short notice, we are always available. Stories in which we are told that the mayor and the Minneapolis Police were appealing early for help and not getting a timely response are about the abject failure of the police department and the failed relationship with the mayor.

Expand full comment

Bringing up the BLM protests also reminds us of the context: people were angry because of racist policing as well aa releasing pent up tension over covid restrictions. If they want to go there, respond with what they were protesting about NEEDED to be protested. We still have issues but it's now a lot harder for things to get swept under the rug. So we will keep George Floyd as a martyr and not allow the rioting (much of it instigated or exacerbated by right-wing actors) to mask the real message: racist, violent policing needs to be eradicated.

Expand full comment

Thank you, there was also a "justice delayed" aspect that should be brought to the forefront, BLM was blamed for acts they were not responsible for in Summer '20 & that narrative needs to be corrected;

This view is fascinating and valuable. Probably nobody outside Minnesota (or even Mpls-St Paul) has heard or read it that way, so MAGA's "everybody but us is a loser and criminal" message gets through. This needs serious re-reporting in depth, before the convention.

I needed to learn more about Walz as I didn’t have time to think about the options very well this past couple of weeks. I spent two hours looking at everything I could find and I must say, seems like an excellent choice by Harris. I’m very happy about where we are right now. I can only hope people don’t get complacent. We must overwhelmingly win at all levels of government so that significant safeguards can be put into place.

And as we vote we must remember to vote for "moderate" candidates for congressional and state candidates. Even if these great people are elected, they need support in congess and in state legislatures to make the big changes we want, especially nationwide reproductive rights, reducing child poverty, and changes to the Supreme Court. "Shapiro was the guy the Trump campaign was most afraid of for this very reason." In the contrary, I think. Shapiro was the guy Trump wanted to run against, and who he *pretended* to be afraid of but actually was ready for. Picking Walz was a brilliant move. Just as Biden stepping aside for Harris, picking Walz neuters a lot of his negative campaigning.

"Harris picked Walz, and all we can do is smile ear to ear as he helps lead the team to victory." And yet, victory won't happen if people don't vote. In two important local elections here, only 1/3 of people voted in each, even with only mail-in ballots: the pro-democracy candidate lost by 23 votes, while the recall of a MAGA library censor succeeded. We must remind people that every vote counts and that everyone must Be a Voter!
