I just read about Prighozin of the Wagner Group - he released a photo of piles of dead bodies (his soldiers), and yelled at the Kremlin about a lack of ammunition. I'm wondering if he's going to "fall" out a window soon, since he's screwing up Putin's narrative that everything is going great.
He's a mercenary and he has his own army of mercenaries. He's not obliged to present himself to Putin as a member of the general staff would be, and his soldiers will protect him. I think the worry here should rather be Putin's, that Prighozin might tire of Russian incompetence, oust Putin, and take over.
Great summary and so inspiring. I shared on my Facebook page. I am a retired teacher in a historic southern town. A Yankee that moved South in 2008. Many of my Facebook friends are local Republicans. I hope they take the time to read your Ukrainian piece.
So well summarized and written - compares with the best journalists who specialize in international affairs. You rightly did not mention all the early reports predicting Putin's imminent demise due to extremely poor health. Those unfortunatly turned out to be foolish wishful thinking.
Excellent synopsis. I'm wondering if there will be any consequences for Putin? He's guilty of many war crimes, he's threatening using nuclear weapons, and he seems to be getting around the sanctions, to name a few. Words and condemnation matter, but, without consequences, they ring hollow.
Putin is the worst threat to the world since Hitler. He now is refashioning this conflict as against the United States and its European allies, and if China furthers its support of Russia, world war may occur.
Thanks for the review on the one year anniversary. I totally agree that it's important to remember, keep up with the information, and continue to support Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Thank you for such an insightful review of the history of this horrible time. Putin's actions have brought a huge blight on the reputation of the Russian people. Zelensky and the people of the Ukraine on the other hand have shown extraordinary resolve and courage.
Putin's Russia can never win while even one person remembers this story.
Beautifully written, Jay. The courage of the Ukrainian people is awe-inspiring. I’m appalled that there are political forces in a democratic country like the USA, who are supportive of Russia. It’s particularly puzzling when the same people who accuse Democrats of being “Commies”, are supporting a Communist country like Russia. Keep up the good work, Jay. The rest of the world mustn’t abandon Ukraine because this is our fight, too.
"It’s particularly puzzling when the same people who accuse Democrats of being 'Commies', are supporting a Communist country like Russia." Exactly. Just what is their agenda, I ask. No matter, heartless, soulless come to mind.
Thank you for this comprehensive look back. I hope we never abandon the Ukraine!
Totally agree. And Zelenskyy’s words bring tears to my eyes.

Putin fears him but needs him. It’s a delicate dance. Very dangerous.

Exactly what has crossed my mind as well. Evidently he's been trying to insert himself politically on a local level, which is troubling by itself.
Slava Ukraini. Geroyam Slava. Great gratitude for this deep dive, and portrayal of the remarkable citizens defending their homeland.

Thank you so much. I can't believe it's been a year.... May the Ukrainian people have victory soon and peace forever.

Thank you for your always thoughtful summary and explanation. And for looking forward.

Excellent summarization of the war this past year, thank you for your information and thoughtful commentary I am riveted by it

Slava Ukraini
Long wars are won by the part with more resources and greater resolve.
Ukraine is now tilting the balance by a small margin, but defeating Putin will take time.
Biggest threats are US elections (ok, still quite far) and China. The Chinese super power could be the gamechanger.
