“In the wake of President Biden calling out members of the GOP for wanting to make cuts to earned benefits for seniors, Republicans like Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), ... is now backpedaling furiously,”
See what happens when you clearly call Republicans out on their shit? This is why I’ve been saying that the leaders of the Democratic Party should be doing this. Unapologetically, relentlessly, and in clear, direct terms.
Maybe, just maybe we might find some members Republican Party actually still have a sense of shame. In any event, they certainly do have a sense of self preservation. Call them out on their shit, every single fucking time, and maybe their voters will just catch on.
"The November 2022 midterms were not kind to Michigan Republicans.
Not only was Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer reelected in a landslide over Republican Tudor Dixon, but state Attorney General Dana Nessel soundly defeated GOP opponent Matt DePerno and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson easily dispatched Republican Kristina Karamo. And Democrats reclaimed control of both houses of the state legislature, with the state Senate in Democratic hands for the first time since 1984."
I was thinking this as well. Michigan is fighting back blue in full spirit of Michael Moore.
And it also makes me think of Arizona and Pennsylvania. The voters there are also pushing back hard against these extremists and election deniers, in other words LIARS and fascist wannabes.
All my Republican friends in Mi were swooning over Dixon, making claims that she clearly won the debates and stating Whitmer didn't stand a chance. They were wrong thank goodness :) I was very proud of my Mi voters!
“In my plan, I suggested the following: All federal legislation sunsets in five years. If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again,” Scott said in a statement following Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress.
From 2001-01-03 to 2023-01-03 Congress passed 4,256 public laws.
Congress works about 170 days per year. 5 years is 850 days. That works out to 5 laws per day.
When is Congress (and staff) going to have time to do anything new?
Florida legislators created a Bill that would allow immigrants to be flown wherever DeSantis says. He hasn’t signed it yet, but likely he will, or may already has?! Immigration is a Federal Government responsibility, how can he get away with this?
Not simply the flight destination but the legislation would permit the use of FL state funds to go to other states to deport immigrants to other states. Nuts.
I don’t get how voters could stand their state tax dollars being spent this way. The white population has fallen from 58% to 53% over the past decade. There is a smaller and smaller group of white voters who seemingly are the ones behind making flying the unwashed away from Florida their mission (the legislature is 77% white and mostly millionaires, not at all representative of the state).
Re: Jimmy Carter, I have always appreciated his faith-in-action as a necessary part of his life. I felt we had a kind, thoughtful, caring man and president in him, and was disheartened by his defeat by Reagan. Years later we learned Reagan had manipulated the Iran crisis in order to win and it confirmed my belief he should not have been in the presidency [shades of 45?!].
I am also of Ukrainian ancestry and feel a special kinship with those fighting Russia, but oh the stories that I have stopped reading; rape used in war, re-educating children who've been abducted into Russia... how long will the world let this monstrosity continue?
And the train fire in Ohio/Pennsylvania-- poisoning water and air and will our gov't allow a big corporation to get away with their false good cheer that don't worry, everything's alright?
I agree. I was thinking this morning about Presidents and their people who do so much to aid them. Biden to Kyiv took more than the Pres. getting on a plane or 2.
So yeah Reagan was responsible for whatever members of his staff, cabinet, agencies did or didn't do because as Pres. Truman said; The buck stops here. Too bad tRump was too stupid to understand this very fundamental truth.
How the f*** does Desantis have the ability to cancel all AP courses!? And why isn’t the dept of education getting involved in all this bullshit book banning!? This is all very very alarming.
I often just forget to hit "like" below your articles, mainly because the like button is just down below the last part, and I don't scroll further. So please accept this as a BIG LIKE for all you write and all you do to contribute to the health of this country. I love your stuff!!
Kudos ( & much admiration) to you, Jay, for aiming to end this week (on the One-year Anniversary - seems like a very inappropriate term for the recognition of such a tragic & momentous day ! - of the Horrific & Devastating Russian War of Aggression on Ukraine 🇺🇦) with an attempt to give us, your avid readers, a "Synopsis" of the past year in Ukraine.
I recently discovered you and delight in reading your coverage! I’m not currently in a position to be a paid subscriber, but hope to be in the near future. Thanks so much for your articulate reporting!!
Not worried about balloons and thoroughly enjoyed the Chelsea Handler takedown of the 3 kumsquats you had yesterday. My question is about charging #45. A really good friend who you probably know doubts that charges will ever be filed against him by anyone. That everyone is kicking the can down the road and eventually we’ll grow weary of the whole matter. It’s easy to become discouraged and I don’t believe the “talking heads” in the media who keep expressing that charges are likely are just blowing smoke. Yes we could face tough times if he is; but so much could be repaired if he is. Faith in our judicial system that no one is above the law and that all men are equal.
I can’t say for certain, but charges seem likely based on what we know. But there’s a lot we don’t know, too. The important thing is that we continue to try to impose accountability. We can’t just give up.
"A Sobering War Anniversary". True, but not too far is the 9th Anniversary of Putin's "annexation" of Crimea (not). Some analysts report about 97 percent of Putin's army is in Ukraine now not countung the Wagner Group.
Coming up on 2/21-2/22 is the scheduled SCOTUS' Oral Arguments on the scope of Google & Twitter's Platform liabilty protection (Section 230) for connecting cells of international terrorists. Not expecting much here given SCOTUS' Shadow Docket and/or Gutless Docket & habit of terse orders.
FYI, Title 42 & tfg's mayhem is OFF SCOTUS' Calendar assuming Title 42 will expire in May 2023 mooting a very ugly 45 chapter.
Thank you Jay. I hope you are well. I know this is a different winter in Mexico than your normal one and your mind and emotions are in a different place. Love and light.
This small college town’s legal issue is unlikely to be on anyone’s radar but there are concerns in pockets of Michigan despite our Democratic majority:

Exactly. Every single time.
However. In Michigan:

Much work still needs to be done in Ohio.

Republican Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) - Sunsetting the Federal Government
Is he vicious or stupid? Maybe both.
Perhaps he should consider sunsetting himself.
@SenRickScott

They are not. That is the point. Do nothing.
Thank you for your supportive comments on Ukraine however the war in Ukraine began on 20, February 2014 with the seizure of Crimea.
As a descendant of Ukraine and the husband of a native Ukrainian from Mariupol, I use the term " invasion ".

The Carters are good people.
imho Reagan should have faced impeachment over the Iran Contra arms deal.....he was guilty as sin.

There is also ( by Friday) a court ruling by the (partisan) District Court Judge in TX on the abortion pill.
We’re all watching carefully.

To clarify, early voting in Wisconsin is open for the primary election on Feb 21, not for the general election in April.
Thanks for that correction.
