1. I’m interested in what actions can be taken by the House majority independent of Senate approval. Ex. Can funding requirements within approved budgets (Omnibus Budget etc) legally be changed? (Ukraine appropriation reduction, reduction of IRS budget, ) designation of how funds can be allocated and by which authorities).
2. Practically, what damage is “likely “? (Assuming the system of checks and balances holds. ) Ex. Offsetting cuts in exchange for raising the debt ceiling.
This may be a little off-topic, but watching Matt Gaetz's antics during the speaker election, I kept wondering if the possible charges of sex trafficking & statutory rape are still being pursued against him? And if yes, is there still a chance that once charged, he could be removed from Congress despite the current power he seems to be wielding? Similarly - what is going to happen to "George Santos" now? Thank you for sharing your brilliant legal analysis & insights with us! The small subscription fee for The Status Kuo doesn't come close to the tremendous value you give.
Gaetz "wingman", JOEL GREENBERG, has pled guilty already & entered into a Plea Agreement (over 80 pages). I guarantee you Gaetz' Defense Attorney has gone over every word of the Prosecutor's agreement with Greenberg & has a defense strategy in place. It's the Prosecutors job to pierce the defenses
I have heard that we don't need to worry about Republicans gutting Social Security and Medicare because it would never get past the Senate orcBiden's veto. But that will be a harder ask if those cuts are tied to increasing the debt ceiling. How much danger is there?
Also, has anyone given any thought to the effect this will have on families who suddenly have to support parents and grandparents if Social Security and Medicare are gone? This could affect the whole economy. Do the Republicans even care? Or have they given this any thought at all?
In my 2-person household; my son who has an intellectual disability and physical disabilities, and I [70 yrs old] both receive social security. In addition my son has a program that uses the Medicaid network that gives him a budget to access services in the community, rather than living in [very restrictive environment of] an institution. We must use our wits, our pens, keyboards and phones to oppose these cockroaches in the House with every fiber of our being. Imagine taking away from a person born with these disabilities!
I believe it's theater with bad intentions, and I'm unsure they can "do" anything given the Senate and Pres. I also think there will be fractures in the Repubs in the House, who won't stand behind ending Social Security and Medicaid.
All the same, those sh-ts deserve to be defeated for putting all of us to this worry.
Thanks in advance. I am looking forward to your posts this week. I have many questions, mainly will this be another move towards destroying our democracy and replacing it with facism? I am 71 and terrified of losing social security and Medicare.
Trump involved himself in the selection of Speaker. Given that Trump doesn't do anything for the good of the people or the good of the party, but strictly in his own self-interest, what do you think he has gotten from the House in this transaction? Investigations to clear political rivals from his path? Interference in ongoing litigation and investigation against him? He may be a grade school drop-out that only knows how to call people names, but he has some a lot of evil masterminds whispering in his ear to guide him to the dictatorship he covets.
Conflict of interest / nepotism violations of Jared Kushner (massive WH policy portfolio translated into a $2 Billion investment in his new firm by MBS). Counter to Hunter Biden potential investigation).
How constrained will the House be by the Senate? In what areas -- apart from investigations and legislation-- will the Senate and the President be able to fend off the worst efforts by the Crazies to bring the country to a halt?
As a board member for over a decade on several nonprofits, I have learned there is no shame in asking for support and know that many people are generous. I think your readers are too.
As a senior dependent on my Social Security, how much can the GOP potentially affect my payments? What damage can they do and how likely do you think that they will succeed? Thank you so much for all of your incredible analysis.

What are the chances that McCarthy could simply renege on any / all of the agreements he made with the Insurrectionist Caucus? No seats on the Rules Committee, no interference with the DoJ investigations into Jordan, Biggs, et al. What recourse would they have?
He won't renege because if he does, they will boot him from the speakership. This was the purpose of extremists getting him to agree to only one member being allowed to a motion to vacate.
Jay-

I'm in the same boat with my son & I'm 60. Really concerned what these rethugs will & can do.

Will the concessions given to the 20 have to be voted on by the whole House?
It is a classic win-win. We all value your insights and are quite happy to pay for it! I love your work.

Good points!

Can the Democrats team up with the more “moderate” (loosely defined…) republicans to fend off the worst damage (eg debt ceiling default)?
I believe there are valid methods to get this done Myhir.

Does the whole house vote on rules changes or is it just up to the rules committee?

We can only hope he'll renege on the worst of them...
Wouldn't that immediately trigger the recall vote, assuming that one stands? I doubt he would risk that.
