As a 3x cancer survivor, this is good news! Despite being 10 years out, the cheapest policy I was able to find being self-employed was $13K/year, with monthly premiums at around $500/month PLUS a $6500 deductible. That would have been nearly half my income. And after 25% self-employment taxes, that didn't leave much to live on, so I have not had insurance since 2014. "Affordable" has always been the operative word, and for the wealthy lawmakers who produced this bill (even in the Obama years) they never considered those who, like myself, would never be able to "afford" health insurance. I still need to look it over. Unemployment knocks me out of the range of Medicaid, but I don't think it's enough to help me afford insurance either.

I’ve been paying around $1500 a month for years for me and ONE child! She leaves my insurance in 2 years, but now I might look into both of us going to ACA to compare.

How soon after the bill is signed does this go into effect? My premiums go up every January, paying over $500 for just myself with a $6700 deductible. I don't buy it through my state's exchange, but, I am on the ACA through the insurer I buy it from. I don't qualify for any discounts now, but, I'm curious to see how this affects my premiums, if at all.

Should be immediate and retroactive

Curious if the 8.5% cap applies to annual or monthly premium amount.
