Love the 1876 election review! I'm flashing on Civics and "Problems of Democracy" classes from high school. This stuff is hard! Thank you for explaining it so that I can wrap my head around it. Thank you for making me smarter, Jay.

And what’s worse now is that, in the stampede towards STEM education, there’s no more Civics classes in HS. Kids who are about to be voting age *need* to learn about this stuff.

Not sure how much $ is expected from HS students, but for sure ignorant students grow up to be more easily fooled citizens.

Describing Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz as "unprincipled" is damning with faint criticism.

Thank you once again for an excellent explanation, including the history! No more loopholes to try and steal an election by the GOP.

As for Republicans not caring for Vice President Kamala Harris holding the power to decide in 2024, I don't think those who pushed for Mike Pence to do that same thing ever expected that their extremist regime would ever again NOT be in power. Chilling, really, to think that through and realize how confident they were that their plan to overthrow the government and assume totalitarian control would succeed.

Do you think we will ever abolish the Electoral College, all together?

If we ever update to constitution to elect a president by popular vote, then each state would send a certificate with the vote count of each presidential candidate to Congress (I believe they already do). Then Congress would sum the votes and certify the totals. The electors would be eliminated. No alternate slate of electors. Of course the lawsuits and recounts after the election would still continue.
