Clear and concise as usual. I love reading anything where Trump has lost in court. And thanks for turning us onto the footnotes for extra zingers!

Whoa, SC Smith hits another one outta da park (via NYT):

Former President Donald J. Trump was indicted on Tuesday in connection with his widespread efforts to overturn the 2020 election, the first criminal charges to emerge from a sprawling federal investigation into Mr. Trump’s attempts to cling to power after losing the presidency to Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The indictment, filed by the special counsel Jack Smith in Federal District Court in Washington, accused Mr. Trump of a conspiracy to defraud the United States, a conspiracy to threaten the rights of others, a conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding before Congress and obstruction of an official proceeding.

45 pages of charges, by the number, plus at least 6 co-conspirators, all the usl suspects:

The real news is if he ever WINS in court!

It seems that Trump’s legal team has forgotten (or perhaps never understood) that this is a CRIMINAL case. They apparently don’t see that “victory” cannot be achieved by drowning your opponent in filings to run up their legal fees to the point at which the opponent cries “uncle” because they don’t want to spend any more money. These are PROSECTORS… they make their money “the old-fashioned” way, and they get paid regardless of which criminal they put away.

He’s pissing away his own PAC funds by the millions. It’s unclear if he can fundraise as fast as he is spending on legal fees…

And, as the indictments mount, and more tRumpers get legal fees covered, the bleeding out of his various grift chests will only accelerate...how deep is the MAGA money well, anyhow? Hope the lawyers are asking for CASH payments -- don't take those checks!

As Judge McBurnley and many of us have noted, it's ALL about the grift, ALL about extracting coin from the hapless millions remaining in thrall of Orange Jesus, and most certainly NOT about tRump's credibility, in or out of a courtroom.

Love it! Thank you for helping us see thru the waters muddied by these filings. Yes, Trumpelstiltskin is making much of his golden opportunity.

It's simple actually, in every instance Trump has shown he wants the supreme power that dictators such as Putin or Kim Jong Un have. So far the system of checks and balances has prevented that. The only ones who can come close to granting him those powers (or start the process) are the voters who worship him. Hopefully they are not the majority or won't be able to steal an election (as we know he will try again).

He openly and explicitly prefers their countries to this one.

Expand full comment

True, but he'd never survive in their countries. He's a rank amateur compared to Putin and Kim Jong Un.

Yeah but that’s one item on the extremely long list of things he thinks he knows but doesn’t.

Good point.

No one as yet outside the Fulton Cty. DA's office, or members of the "special" grand jury, actually know who and for what crimes will be indicted, so how could a lawsuit based on a presumptive or prospective GJ action even hope to succeed?

Judge McBurnley called it correctly: Just more meritless time-wasting by tRump, and more to the point, yet another excuse for a fund-raising grift! Very plain-speaking dismissal of a nuisance lawsuit, and one hopes that the judge hearing the same suit yet again on Aug. 10 will dismiss it out of hand as being moot...as Jay pointed out, tRump is getting no love from the GA courts, so let the indictments show begin!

The judge had it nailed on this point.

“Judge McBurnley”... thank you for that one! Between this and “Trumpelstiltskin” I can’t stop laughing!

You know, it's one thing for a judge to dismiss a motion using dry judicial language, however, it's quite another matter to openly ridicule the movant in the opinion, and in such colorful language...I mean "(T)Rumpelstiltskin" -- wow, just WOW!

"Bless his heart." We all know what that means in the south. Lol It's about time these lawyers and trump get smacked down. It's spectacular to see, finally.

That was for the Southerners out there.

My former MIL, southern born and bred, had no idea of how to deal with me, born in Philadelphia, raised in Hawai’i and living in Boston, very liberal and oftentimes too plain spoken for the dynamics of that family. I cannot count how many times she sweetly said to me “well bless your heart” 😂 I grew to love and appreciate her, and hope it eventually was mutual. She passed without us ever talking about it.

He has been sued so many times in his life, he knows how to tie up the courts hoping to wear down the system. But this all seems to infantile. I am surprised that his lawyers even try.

I'm surprised he still has any lawyers! I hope they're insisting on payment in advance.

NYT reports this morning that Trump's legal defense fund is just about broke. LOL. His lawyers better be getting all their cash up-front, because that well is going dry. Maybe that will put the kabosh on these stupid shenanigans and we can get on with the business of getting more indictments AND some convictions!

Expand full comment

Maybe Trump shouldn’t keep wasting his lawyers’ time on these BS filings.

Expand full comment

His PAC (paid by his ignorant donors) pays his lawyers, so he is free to use as much legal counsel as he can in the time given. It’s another free ride for the grifter.

That PAC stuff is so confusing to me. Of course you're right. Everything’s a grift with him.

Jay, just a general comment that I am really enjoying The Status Kuo. In particular I appreciate how you start with an overview to provide context and then dig in deeper.

Trump SERIOUSLY doesn't know when to keep his trap shut. And apparently, it's infectious - because his lawyers are doing the same dumb thing and expecting a different result.

The remarkable thing is, he remains fully convinced there is no problem he can’t solve by talking uninterrupted and at length--when in fact that’s the only thing in his 77-year fall-up-the-stairs of a life that’s ever gotten him in trouble.
