I have a solution. Since McConnell rammed through the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett just before the 2020 election, that same amount of time should be enough for the Trump lawyers to prepare for trial.

Linda Thurston's avatar

tfg and his legal advisors have already had 2-1/2+ years to get his ducks in a row. Any further delay just gives him more time to fleece his followers.

**Any further delay just gives him more time to fleece his followers. **

So true, and just what he wants. He's gonna ride the MAGA Gravy Train all the way to the end.

Michael Stayton's avatar

By 2026 will the MAGAs become tired of the never ending grift (or just run out of money)?

DG's avatar

Well, he is likely starting to run low on funds. If he stops paying all those lawyers now, he might as well get a public defender and just plead guilty and BEG for mercy.

Trish Reid's avatar

However, perish the thought, he could actually begin to use some of his OWN money. He’s a billionaire, right?

Karen Guzowski's avatar

I was thinking the same thing.

Trump team whining about the amount of material they need to review on this Motion is not meant for the judge. They are playing to an audience.

The judge (and everyone else in that courtroom) knows that there are search engines for looking things up.

Also......if these Bozos have all this time to spend on interviews and media tours, they have time to get ready for trial. We shouldn’t see their faces until the next court date. They are soooooo overwhelmed. 🙄. Right.

You write so clearly, Jay. It’s a joy to read you everyday. We are lucky to have you guide us through the muck.

Maria K.'s avatar

I don't know what Trump's lawyers are complaining about. Had their client not committed millions' of pages worth of crimes, they wouldn't have to read all that stuff. Besides, if they don't like how this case is being worked, they are free to quit at any time. P. S. If we keep moving the trial date up every time Trump attempts to influence the jury pool or intimidate witnesses, it will end up being January 7, 2021.

Ryn's avatar

NYT continuing to prove that they’re terrible.

Why isn’t the default position skepticism when it comes to reporting on trump’s claims?

Lance Khrome's avatar

Worse yet, political reports weighing on legal questions that they're clueless about, so they revert to - wait for it - "bothsides" writeups...abominable practice,

Lance Khrome's avatar

NYT political coverage continues to embarrass itself...the Peter Baker rubbish article about tRump indictments "are getting boring" and are "surreally routine" was just shameful so-called "journalism" in the extreme.

BetsyC (WA)'s avatar

They got so bad I dropped my subscription.

Ryn's avatar

Me too. I have no idea what’s going on over there but it’s embarrassing.

But .... Wordle! (The only thing keeping me as a subscriber.)

Haven’t seen that - I’ll have to look

"Cooking" is all that's keeping me subbed, but that's soon to expire, so, sayonara NYT.

Clay Bennett's avatar

The New York Times has held a reputation far better than it deserves for decades.

Kevin's avatar

What's wrong with reporting the facts, and just the facts, and letting readers form their own opinion? That seems to be happening, exactly as it should.

Ryn's avatar

Because when you take republican lies and fake-outrage seriously, you play into their game. These are not serious arguments and they should be called out as such. And trump is the most disingenuous one of all.

People need to be informed - they need to read things like this Substack article. It’s like a fact check on trump’s defense. And if the news media isn’t going to provide that info on how discovery is actually handled, then people will believe trump’s words because nobody is presenting the full picture

That’s why

Jen Schaefer's avatar

On a side note-wouldn’t you love to see tfg’s kids as closely scrutinized as Hunter Biden is? I wonder what might turn up??🤔

Dave Edgar's avatar

Oh, yeah - I am with you! Pretty sure Junior's done w-a-a-ay more coke than Hunter. Love to see how many times he's been pulled over for impaired, but cut loose because of Daddy. Pretty sure that would be non-zero. And that's just for openers.

Jen Schaefer's avatar

Not to mention Jared’s 2billion from the Saudi’s-for what? And all of the money jr, Eric, ivanka, and Jared made while tfg was in the oval. It’s criminal.

bLUEduRham's avatar

I have thought the same thing!

LW's avatar

No matter the date, Trump supporters will say he is not getting a fair amount of time for his lawyers to prepare. Then they will send him more money. Lol! I have degrees in Psychology and have read quite a bit about cult mentality, but the Trump cult is one that will be studied heavily in future Psych programs.

Jay Kuo's avatar

I think you’re right. Any reasonable date is too soon for him, and he will say the same thing about it.

Trish Reid's avatar

Funny thing is that it doesn’t matter what he says anymore. He’s talking to a judge now.

Mao Zhou's avatar

Excellent point about the digital search capabilities of modern law.

Lance Khrome's avatar

Quite...effectively demolished tRump's whining about "millions of pages" BS.

Pat R's avatar

But maybe these scholarly attorneys who would agree to defend the man really and truly do not know that. For years I’ve been quietly questioning the intelligence of ANYONE being a fan or believer of tfg. Really!

Shire Jansen's avatar

Considering that the alleged crimes were committed before, during and after the 4 year window of holding office (when charges couldn't be brought but crimes could be committed) the day after never doesn't work for me. Also, someone please tell Rudy this isn't an election year, he seems to think it was wrong for charges to be filed in an election year and also remind him of his "insurance policy" because I'd really like to see it. 😎

Linda Karmann's avatar

If trump had to sit in jail until his trial, he’d want a speedy one... just sayin’.

Mao Zhou's avatar

Justice delayed is denied.

Kate's avatar

Thanks Jay, as always a great piece!!

We cancelled our Times subscription awhile back, got REALLY tired of them continuing to carry water for the orange menace!

Bob King's avatar

They have had a conservative slant forever, but I just skipped the opinion pages, unless I read it for comedic effect.

Since Murdoch has been publisher, it's been worse and worse, leaking into stories that have political implications without being explicitly political.

I can tolerate a different point of view; hell, I welcome it. A bias, on the other hand, means that there's nothing in it that doesn't serve a viciously absurd agenda.

If I want that, RT is free and is the best source for what the Kremlin would like you to believe.

I plead cranial flatus.

Lance Khrome's avatar

Meanwhile, Down in FL, the docs case is bump-bump-bumping along, under the shaky hand of *Judge* Cannon, where yet another court date regarding classified material was canceled, as Cannon seems quite bemused by CIPA requirements, and the defendants are taking full advantage. The putative trial date of May, 2024 may or may not hold, depending on how the many pre-trial motions filed by the defense are handled by the judge, and how many are appealed by the prosecutors. DC and GA have massively shifted the spotlight from Fort Pierce, so Cannon can continue futzing about with minimum press coverage as attention turns elsewhere.

Jay Kuo's avatar

She’s definitely a problem.

Trish Reid's avatar

She has a lot of supervisory eyes on her, though. Hopefully they are laser focused after her past behaviors. I doubt those folks will be distracted by TFGs other cases.

Richard Friedman's avatar

Of course, if the mountain of evidence was really so high, any normal human who climbed it would have already forgotten what they learned at the bottom and would have to start all over again.

Michael Stayton's avatar

After arriving in HELL the Defendant's lawyers would be sentenced to read the 11.5 million pages from top to bottom over and over again.

Susan Linehan's avatar

Gee. I just thought the lawyers figured that if they could give Judge C a real belly laugh, she'd go easier on their client over the next diatribe.

Karen Goheen's avatar

What other shenanigans can Trump use to delay his trial? There are many, right? When his lawyers resign due to his “behavior” or not getting paid, or whatever reason they give he can claim inadequate counsel and ask for a delay so his new lawyers can prepare. He can claim bone spurs…

Jay Kuo's avatar

There are many. It will take discipline and a tight ship from the judge.
