it is terrible to see someone who knows the truth of the situation decide to join the lie. I think that is called collaboration with an enemy. Thus entire executive branch should be forcibly deposed.
In Rubios defense. He knows Trump. Shitting on Trump isn't going to help Ukraine, in fact, it will make Trump madder at Ukraine, and Rubio will be out of a job, where he still has a chance to try to manage Trump behind closed doors and obviously not when JDV is in the room.
It is one thing for the rest of us who are not in Trump's inner circle to disparage what he does, but Rubio would be sacrificing himself to keep Trump surrounded only by people who do not have a problem with what Trump is doing. Same with Senator Lindsay Graham. While I despise both of them for being Republicans and catering to Trump, at the same time I could see that Graham at the MSC was explaining how Trump thinks. Understanding this is going to be critical to Ukraine's survival. I am not saying that Zelenskyy does not get it, I think he does, but that was part of the performance he needed to be a part of. Zelenskyy did not come to Washington to sign the bill that Trump gave him to sign, so of course there was going to be trouble. Trump says no troops, Zelenskyy says troops. Lindsay told him negotiate that later. He should have a clause in there that the contract is valid with such and such protections. Not in case, but up front. If Trump says no, no way, then he needs to go offer the deal to Europe.
My big worry is that Trump decides to pit US troops with Russians against Ukraine. My other worry is that Trump decides to pit US troops against American citizens. Trump needs to be managed, and if everyone throwing up their arms that he was rude to Zelenskyy, when I was not surprised in the least, nor about JDV being so rude, that was the effect he wanted. I cannot even go there at this point. I know who he is, and I am also not getting upset every time a toddler shits his pants or throws a tantrum. I do not feel any responsibility for the behavior of Trump, or honestly of Merz. I did not vote for any of them. What I do want to do is understand how to manage them best.
I am disagreeing. Showing spine isn't going to keep Trump under control. In fact, the unseen actions may be the ones we don't know we need to appreciate. That is how it works, and we do not need our politicians performing, at least not the Republicans. Trump's posturing is enough for all of us, and little insecure JDV as well. So, please explain to me other than being a cool cowboy, will confronting Trump do for Ukraine or the American people?
In fact, right now I would like to see more Dems confronting. How, by drafting bills every day to address each and every one of the things that Trump is doing, and going through project 2025 and drafting bills for the remaining things that he has not done, which stand up against these things and offer other options instead. Then, when their bills are not presented, they need to take them to the press by calling a press conference and explaining to the American people how their bill is turned down by the Republicans and what it would do for the American people. And, not mention Trump, mention Musk, because the MAGAs may not be so convinced by Musk as by Trump.
The only thing that will keep Trump under control is a cardiac event brought on by poor diet and no exercise. I guess Marco can continue to eat his s-sandwich.
The pain needs to be directly felt by the people to the point that we get French Revolution Part 2. The press is useless.
Chris, just off a book club talk by Anne Applebaum on Andra Watkins Substack, where we all read Anne's book Autocracy, Inc. She has interesting things to say, and these messages are repeated by people in the know.
As you said the pain needs to be felt by the people. I am already having psychic pain just thinking about trying to move my almost 91-year-old mother with dementia to Germany which I have looked into, and which she does not want, when her social security and medicare get cut off.
Anne says, we the people need to collaborate across groups about the corruption.
The corruption needs to be tied to what is going on in people's lives.
An idea I have from what she is saying is that we should be asking our representatives Dems and Repubs to have fired or not federal workers talking on television and on our social media feeds (or for those of us who do not have social media feeds) or on YouTube about what their lives are like right now, and what they were like before. Also, what services they performed that the public will not be getting anymore for their tax dollars.
We have got to be meeting in groups. If you local politicians won't hold town halls, you have to hold them yourself sans politicians, and try to get the news cameras there. Invite celebrities if that is what it takes to get the media there. Anything.
The AGs of 23 states have been planning their lawsuits against P2025 long before the election. They're the ones who will handle it, at least until the Democrats win back Congress.
You are asking Democrats to be performative. Most are lawyers and know that is not effective. In fact it makes them look like mediocre lawyers at best.
Democrats need to continue to hold news conferences as they do nearly every day. They do get covered, even if you have to seek it out.
They are as effective at their jobs as can be expected, when holding no majority.
Unfortunately Trump is testing the AGs by lying and pretending he is following what they say, but he is not.
Still, they have their suits planned, out but we need to see the democrats coming up with bills to fight the things in effect so far, and in anticipation of other things in Project 2025. Not to get them passed, but to go to the press and call a conference and say, Republicans refuse to present this bill that I have drafted and insist on a press conference. Let the people know how their problems could be solved legislatively if they had a functioning Congress, not a bunch of republican robots in place.
Linda Weide: If only Trump was manageable. But he isn’t. in his first term everybody and anybody who tried to manage him was gone within a year, screaming about what an F’ ing moron, idiot , etc he is. Meanwhile, he bangs on destroying our infra structure, institutions, ignoring the Constitution and aiding and abetting our Cold War to the present enemy. His parents couldn’t manage him, his wives couldn’t manage him, and his staff couldn’t manage him. is it any wonder that the Republicans can’t manage him either? As far as I can tell, Vladimir Putin is the only person in the world who can manage him, as demonstrated last Friday in his soliloquy on how Putin and he have gone through so much together, referencing the Russian hoax, except it wasn’t a hoax The second real Russian hoax is that Trump thinks Putin actually cares about him. Remember his love letters with Kim Il Un? Trump is clean out of his mind and has been since early in his life; unmanageably nuts. And he needs to be forced out before he blows us all to Kingdom Come.
The sole purpose of the modern rethuglican party is to echo whatever nonsense Dear Leader emits that day and abase themselves in feckless fealty and obeisance...
Putin's Manchurian candidate has now revealed himself, without a shadow of a doubt. Trump and his sycophants have now gone all-in with Putin and thrown our Allies under the bus. And now the news that Trump is dismantling the US cybersecurity that blocks Russia from infiltrating our country!!...
I hear people say; "Oh, Trump is a "Lame Duck" president". I don't believe Trump thinks he IS. Remember, Trump told his base that they would never have to vote again. If Republicans in the House and Senate don't WAKE UP, there won't be anymore "free/fair" elections.
Trump is on track to dismantle our democracy faster than Hitler did in 1933...
"Hitler systematically disabled & then dismantled his country’s democratic structures & processes in less than 2 months’ time—specifically, 1 month, 3 weeks, 2 days, 8 hours, & 40 minutes. The minutes, as we will see, mattered."
Putin, Trump, Vance, the Oligarchs and the authors of Project 2025 ALL understand this 👇
“The big joke on democracy is that it gives its mortal enemies the means to its own destruction.” - Joseph Goebbels, March 23, 1933 (The day Hitler succeeded in destroying Germany's democracy)
I don't think most Americans actually know how Hitler destroyed Germany's democracy, nor how quickly and "democratically" he did it. If you don't understand history, you are doomed to repeat it...
It will take just a few Republicans in the House and more in the Senate to grow a spine to stand up to Trump to prevent the dismantling of our democracy. It is up to THEIR constituents to make them WAKE UP! We're already seeing it start to happen at town halls.
I recommend watching Rachel Maddow or listen to her podcast, to maintain some degree of hope... and then ACT!
Would love to read the article by Atlantic but to do so, must purchase subscription for $79! On the possible Eve of losing SS? Can you recommend alternative sources? Thank you. Occurs to me perhaps uninformed GOP cannot afford
legitimate news sources, ie we are losing access to press by decreasing income. It’s a REAL difficulty. Think “eggs”.
Do you blame him? I have despised him all my life, but hating on him right now is wasted. Hate on Trump and Musk, because LMR is still anti Russia whatever he says, and that means that he can see opportunities however small they might be which make a small difference.

Trump *& Vance, two childish bullies trying to demonize a brave man. I hope the Dems stand up by not sitting down at the State of the Union to listen how he is making America great by dumping on allies and embracing dictators. Dems, get in his face by staying home.
Sorry, but there are too many candidates for that invertebrate poster boy position. Lindsey Graham, for example. Any GOP Senator other than Murkowski, for sure. All of them have been spatchcocked.
All Democrats in the Senate and House should boycott Traitor Trump’s State of the Union address!
Show the world our disdain for and disgust with liar, fraud, con, grifter, sex abuser, scumbag, convicted felon, racist, fascist, Hitler-lover, Putin’s puppet, America’s Disgrace Trump!

I just sent this to my State's two Senators and to my district's Representative in the House:

One more thing about Rubio and others. They all know about Russian hacking and election interference. And wrote the report on it. But this happened and no one said damn thing:
“On February 28, the same day that President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance took the side of Russian president Vladimir Putin against Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, Martin Matishak of The Record, a cybersecurity news publication, broke the story that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered U.S. Cyber Command to stop all planning against Russia, including offensive digital actions.”
Absolutely, boycott Trump’s ranting and raving lies; they deserve contempt. This would send incredible message to Trump - not to mention sending him into embarrassing rage. He loves a crowd - do not give it to his.
It's pointless to try to send a message to Trump, since, in his senscence, he's not equipped or inclined to receive messages. But it's a person's sacred duty to send him into an embarrassing rage.
Sadly, the vast majority of Dems are just as spineless as Rubio. When you've permanently embraced the Pretty Rainbows and Dancing Unicorns approach to dealing with bottom feeding scum, as Dems have; terrified of getting down and fighting as dirty as they do, don't expect anything to change. What are the MAGAts going to do...not like you? Trash talk about you to their cabal of brain addled inbred goobers? With a few exceptions, Dems are a bunch of ineffectual pussies.
I would love to see every one of them, after every trump lie, hold up a very readable sign saying Liar. The Liar In Chief would be thrown off seeing one side of the room covered in easily readable signs, even he would have trouble ignoring that. Or is this against protocol? But why follow established protocol when that traitor is throwing everything this country stands for out the window?
I live in a small town in northern California and yesterday I went to a rally in support of Ukraine. There were many many people there and we signed a card which was actually several large pieces of paper to send to be sent to President Zelinski saying that we supported him and we admired his courage. I doubt a letter like that will ever be sent to anybody in the Trump administration. They’re blinded by greed and political ambition. At 79 I can tell them “life is short and memories are long“ they have to live with all of the crap they’re doing
I almost understand Lindsey Graham's spinelessness. The grifter in chief's got something on him (probably the way Putin's got something on the grifter).
But Marco is making a clear choice here that I don't think is based on blackmail. Same is true with the rest of the Republicans in the Senate.
“Foreign Aid is not charity,” Rubio stated back in 2017. “We must make sure it is well spent,” he wrote but noted, “it is less than 1% of budget” and that it is “critical to our national security.”
Funny thing, when my cousin (not an economist) told me that 25% of our money was spent on foreign aid and I (an economist) kindly referred him to a site that pointed out it is less than 1%, I got a lecture about Biden being a crook. Not a word about the convicted felon he supports.
Musk controls the Cabinet and Trump. But Musk is a dumbshit. His smart guy act is a con. Tell everyone you know, on every platform the truth: Musk is a dumbshit. Remove Musk. Musk is a dumbshit.
Turns out he lied. His parents left a few years before Castro's revolution. According to a 2011 Washington Post article (I think they were still doing actual journalism back then). "[in] Florida, being connected to the post-revolution exile community gives a politician cachet that could never be achieved by someone identified with the pre-Castro exodus, a group sometimes viewed with suspicion."
Rubio denies lying about his family history, claiming that they'd always intended to return but were prevented by the communist takeover.
Oh, and his parents weren't citizens when he was born here. But, I guess it's not birthright citizenship when it's someone on the right.
Ironic that he's so pro-Russia now, but you can't really be a Republican without being a hypocrite. That seems to be about the only oath they keep.
I wonder what McCarthy, Hoover and Warren would make of Trump's GOP.
Op-Ed headline from the latest Bezos propaganda rag, WaPo, "Zelensky must mend the breach with Trump — or resign". If there were any doubts as to why WaPo is now a husk of its former self, this is the final nail in the coffin. Democracy has finally died in Darkness. https://archive.ph/D1QNs#selection-569.0-569.52
How do we encourage all of the Democrats to just NOT attend tomorrow night's spectacle of lies??? Another TV moment for the king?? IF you turn on your TV do NOT go near anything related to him or discussion about the "event."
I can't watch more than a minute or so of him speaking anyway. You couldn't pay me enough to watch the State of the Union speech. I'd rather chew nails.
it is terrible to see someone who knows the truth of the situation decide to join the lie. I think that is called collaboration with an enemy. Thus entire executive branch should be forcibly deposed.
Yes, collaboration with the enemy.
Also called "treason" - gving aid or comfort to the enemy.

Prepare for the Trump Black or Brown shirt militias to take over if the US military does not.

Prediction: Li'l Marco will be the first Cabinet officer to bail this shitshow in order to "spend more time with the family".
Do you blame him? I have despised him all my life, but hating on him right now is wasted. Hate on Trump and Musk, because LMR is still anti Russia whatever he says, and that means that he can see opportunities however small they might be which make a small difference.
We've seen how difficult it is to sit upright when you have a jelly spine.
Well put, Theresa.
Marco Rubio is a Spineless Worm!
As spineless as Rubio is, the arrogant posture of Vance on the couch irritates me more. It’s clear he feels above Zelensky and convinced that MAGA is superior. I dearly wish we could impeach both him and Trump and deport Elon. Shameless grifters, one and all.
Vance is the schoolyard bully who breaks bad as long he has his big brother backing him up. Get him alone, and he'd fold like a cheap lawn chair in the hot sun.
I guess, barring that, we could settle for watching while the 3 of them were skinned alive.
Slowly. With a dull butter knife.
Trump *& Vance, two childish bullies trying to demonize a brave man. I hope the Dems stand up by not sitting down at the State of the Union to listen how he is making America great by dumping on allies and embracing dictators. Dems, get in his face by staying home.
Two small men trying to act like big men in the presence of a great man.
Not a single Democrat should show up for the Sorry State of Our Union by Putin's Dancing Orange Bear.
And I like your description of Putin's Dancing Orange Bear. I call it the Orangutang but that's insulting the apes.
There would be no end - after impeaching and convicting trump and vance, we'd have a continue with johnson, rubio, and so on.
I am starting to wonder about the integrity of the election results.
Starting to???
Sorry, but there are too many candidates for that invertebrate poster boy position. Lindsey Graham, for example. Any GOP Senator other than Murkowski, for sure. All of them have been spatchcocked.
I love your use of that term for a flayed chicken!
Thanks! Not actually flayed, but the backbone has been removed!
Even better!

the hell with protocol!
That's a FABULOUS idea!! You know that m.traitor.g and bobblehead would do it in a heartbeat. (Jasmine, are you listening?)
Rubio has no “core principles”. Just another self-serving flunky who had chance of moving to the White House until he became another Trump “convert.”
Doesn’t he remember how the ever-faithful Mike Pence was treated in the end?
I live in a small town in northern California and yesterday I went to a rally in support of Ukraine. But Marco is making a clear choice here that I don't think is based on blackmail. Same is true with the rest of the Republicans in the Senate.
Rubio just put himself in the history books and not in a good way. What a legacy to leave for your grandchildren. I hope that sofa pic follows him.
Someone needs to update his Wikipedia page pic.
It will. The Internet Is Forever.
I constantly remind folks that “brilliance” does not necessarily convey good judgment. I witnessed firsthand this truth over four decades in academia.
But IS he "brilliant"? I've read otherwise.
Well yeah, he is.
I cringe at the thought of having to submit another “…gate” to public discourse, but “Elon-gate” is here and it won’t go away on its own.
The way the GOP are rolling over and playing dead... I weep for America.
Nancy, it's not the GOP anymore. It's the White Totalitarian Faction, or the WTF.
😂 Ok I guess I have to cede the Greed Over People GOP, over to WTF.
Rubio is a spineless sycophant. He’s destroyed any credibility he may have had and ended his political career.
I guess he forgot how the Russians and Communists treated Cuba and why his family fled to the US.
I can’t quite understand why “sycophant” has become such a popular word when “toady” is so much more evocative. Apologies to the toads.
What the phuq?!?
Shame on Bezos and his rag that used to be a reputable newspaper! Shame! Shame!!!
what the actual phuc indeed
If this is the Mark Thiessen opinion piece, he has always been this way. Nothing new.
Marco Rubio is the Lindsey Graham of Ron Johnsons.
👏👏👏
How do we encourage all of the Democrats to just NOT attend tomorrow night's spectacle of lies??? Another TV moment for the king?? IF you turn on your TV do NOT go near anything related to him or discussion about the "event."
I can't watch more than a minute or so of him speaking anyway. You couldn't pay me enough to watch the State of the Union speech. I'd rather chew nails.
Got rid of the TV. Never missed it for a minute. So again, gonna miss a waste of time.
