Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president, is reported to have stated that former president Trump is "not welcome in Mexico in our goal to keep convicted felons and rapists from crossing our borders."

It took me a bit to figure out the Felon on a Melon. My first guess was Dope on a Cantaloupe! Anyone else?

I think that works just as well and uses a three-syllable word as well.

Jay Kuo: There is a distinct resemblance between the Conservative self-own -- where "dumbass liberal" is an oxymoron, and the George Clooney video to defeat ignorance through science as supported by "United to Defeat Untruthful, Misinformation [and Balderdash] and to Support Science" -- U-Dumbass.

Is that a coincidence?

OMG Jay! Brilliant, I loved every one. My faves: felon on a melon, George Clooney, the kid in Congress, Jamie Raskin, and the beach-loving dog! Laughed so hard it was good I’d finished my coffee or I’d be wearing it now.

Reason number 7,592 to adore George Clooney.... That was epic!

The way that adorable lab reacted to the news of the beach is the way my dogs react when you ask if they want dinner. Particularly the wiener dog, because he also fully deploys his ears.

Thanks for the giggles! Much needed. Just read about a Yale historian who is convinced that another huge coup attempt will be made (he predicted the Jan 6 insurrection) by subverting poc votes and grabbing power. Besides voting in massive numbers impossible to ignore, any suggestions on what can be done? The House and SCOTUS are compromised-I’m deeply and truly worried about the future of democracy. Sorry-I know you’re taking time off and deserve it in every way-I’m asking the community here for insight in battling my growing anxiety over this eventuality. I love you and this community, Jay-sanity and decency reign here-and I’m grateful.

We can be grateful that our current President and Commander-in-Chief will be ready for such an attack, and will ensure that all appropriate and necessary forces will be prepared and armed appropriately.

Not like last time, when the person occupying the Office of the President was in on the plot and had issued orders through his acting secretaries prior to January 6 that put the Capitol Police and National Guard at a disadvantage to defend against the onslaught, and also refused for several hours to call for assistance or to demand his supporters to stop their attack.

"Besides voting in massive numbers impossible to ignore, any suggestions on what can be done?"

It is hard to tell from your post whether you expect the massive voting to happen organically or whether you are involved (or plan to be) with voter registration and get out the vote (GOTV) efforts.

For recommendations on how to get involved and actively be a changemaker, here is a good place to start: https://www.forwardtogetherhub.net/where-to-get-stuff

I am-but hoping and praying that there’s more that can be done.

If you know any of the estimated 16 MILLION Americans who turned 18 since 2020, talk to them! Encourage them to register to to vote if they haven't already, and help them them do so if they face any barriers to getting registered.

The vast majority of these young people aren't going to want Republicans leading our country once they understand what Republicans stand for and are already doing to strip us of our individual rights on the local and state levels.

Engage with them RESPECTFULLY on issues they are passionate about, and help them understand how a Trump presidency will harm not help people in Gaza, the environment, LGBTQ+ individuals, the poor, freedom of choice, etc.

Let them know about what President Biden has accomplished in his term, despite all of the pushback from the Republicans in Congress.

Then, help them get to the polls in November!

I'm sorry if I am misunderstanding your post. But maybe you could put your hopes and prayers into action by following Cheryl Johnson's link and pick one of those options to do? It's amazing how action can be a remedy for anxiety. Best, Kai

Thx for this. I am involved in Florida. However, my anxiety stems from worrying that all of this won’t be enough to protect democracy. I’m of the faith tradition that equates love, hope, and prayers with action. Otherwise, they are simply hollow words. Faith without works is dead-I believe that. With all the powerful bad actors at play in state legislatures, SCOTUS, and the House-is it enough? Therein lies my concern.

Are you interested in helping register new voters? Field Team 6 (www.fieldteam6.org) launched a campaign in FL focused on unregistered women in flippable FL districts. I am writing postcards withn them for a similar campaign in NC. But in addition to postcards, they also do phone and text banks and social storming (i.e., posting on social media).

Postcards to Voters (www.postcardstovoters.org) has been running campaigns in FL directed to Democratic voters who have previously voted by mail that they may need to reapply since the FL legislature changed the law. The current campaign is to voters in Seminole County.

Postcards to Swing States (www.turnoutpac.org/postcards/) has a campaign in FL. The postcards are to be writen throughout the summer and then mailed Oct 15. These are nonpartisan postcards that offer volunteers three messages to from which to choose.

There will also be lots of phone-banking and door-to-door canvassing opportunities. Sign up on Mobilize (www.mobilize.us) and find out what is availble to suit your schedule. Training is offered and you will likely meet so like-minded individuals which may help you dial down your anxiety.

As Simon Rosenberg of Hopium Chronicles always say "Do More; Worry Less"

I share your worries. Wish I had a solution! Some of my worries are allayed when I help register voters (the DMV in my state has a voter registration booth in most offices). Still doesn't feel like enough.

I couldn't figure out how to link this, but John Pavlovich had an inspiring post here on Substack on June 7, addressing these worries. Coincidentally, at a non-political meeting in January I met a former Alaskan legislator. After 2 terms she was fed up with the gridlock and didn't run for re-election. I was a little dismayed, because that's how I thought the big policies were made. She thought what's really holding our society together is individuals who are kind, honest, and doing what they are good at. This is along the lines of what John Pavlovich wrote.

Anyway. If you find the answer, let us know!

John Pavlovitz is amazing. He comes from a faith perspective (which matters to me) but encourages us to not be jerks-just try to do the best we can to do the good we can. Kai, part of my anxiety comes from being in Florida-I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that it can be dangerous to express opinions here. I do work with my local group to get folks registered and I am planning to help at the polls in November. I just see so much hateful red around Sarasota County (Mike Flynn and moms for liberty territory), it’s disheartening. Reading and sharing here with like-minded folks really helps. Peace be yours-and keep on with the good trouble! 😊💙

I never thought I would say this, but I absolutely expect this. See Supreme Court refusing to rule on the ridiculous immunity claim, see the unhinged Congress, see state governments today, see MAGA crazies. I honestly will be shocked, relieved and grateful if Trump is not installed on January 20 NO MATTER what happens in the election. I know I am the one who sounds insane, but please listen to the real deranged and frightening talk from not just the fringes, but from “mainstream” people and places. Our country has gone mad.

It isn’t the whole country, just the GOP. Women are not happy about not having control over their own bodies. State Republican committees are running out of money, they are fighting each other. The Democrats are organized, have many campaign offices in every swing state, they have none. Just keep plugging along, I’d rather be us than them! (Thanks to Simon Rosenberg from “Hopium Chronicles)
