This is great news. For me there is an unanswered question in all of this that maybe you can help me with.

Back in the 1990s Trump Taj Mahal pleaded nolo contendere to money laundering in Atlantic City, and paid over $1 million in fines. Trump Taj Mahal’s parent company was Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. That always seemed to me to indicate that at least one of Trump’s businesses had a felony conviction even before the 2016 election. Why did that not loom more largely in the 2016 election? And since it did not, will it make any difference to his base to have yet one more corporate conviction to his credit?

No lo contendre is not a guilty plea.

This is all great news for the country, however, something is nagging at me. A worst case scenario. What if Manchin and Sinema's lust for power and control makes them decide to use the ploy of threatening to leave the Democratic party, giving control to the Republicans, unless they get their way on bills? I don't trust either of them. This white knuckling our way through elections every 2 years, wondering if democracy will survive, is exhausting. Unless trump and all of his co-conspirators around the country and in Congress, are held accountable, this exhausting cycle will continue for generations. I'm just so tired.

Hey, Karen, I'm with you! And I live in safely D Ann Arbor!! We must come up with a better solution than "chicken little" every 18 months. It is exhausting and a recipe for fomenting disinterest just because we cannot sustain this pace/anxiety/pressure.

I also am frustrated with the D's unrelenting requests for $$$. It is HUGELY counterproductive, IMHO. My husband and I both contributed in 2020, and it has haunted us ever since. We felt the candidates truly did not appreciate our support (we gave the max per law), and only kept pressing for more. Then, this year, our contributions were weaponized against us with D requests coming from every corner of the country, literally (including Alaska!). Really? Terribly ineffective and, ultimately, self-defeating.

Completely agree. I live in Vermont, so very blue up here, but, pockets of maga supporters. Besides the unrelenting requests for money, which I get because it costs a lot to wage a political campaign, but, the subject lines from the Democrats just piss me off. All very negative, we're losing, we're giving up, blah, blah, blah. I even emailed them back and asked why I would donate to someone throwing in the towel. No response. I gave a ton of money to Obama in 2012 and 2013. I tell them no more until I see them grow a spine and stop negotiating with domestic terrorists. I'm not sure it will quell the interest in voting, but, it is totally exhausting and deflating to watch the Republicans get away with crimes and cheating year after year with no consequences.

100% agree with every single word.

That's a ditto, no reference to that dead d**khead intended.

It's funny you mention that. Unrelenting emails about "send us money -we're losing!" and today "Hey, we won! Send us money!" Laughably absurd. So sick of this system.

The requests are unrelenting, aren’t they?

And if you unsubscribe to any of them you end up right back on their list because of shared mailing lists. It is overwhelming!

Totally. Ugh.

I was in A2 at beginning of pandemic on Packard. Then Haslett for two years until November. Originating from Hawaii. The amount of money requests and outright shrieking for Senator Warnock was maddening. We definitely have to refresh our elections, especially funding, register voters at DMV at 18, repeal Citizens United, teach Civics in schools, pass Voting Rights Bill and support our next president Kamala Harris ✌️❤️

At least you aren't getting $$$ requests from Drumpf!

I deal with them, depending on how they arrive - online and/or email? Delete, delete, delete.

Or snailmail? If they come with a prepaid return envelope, I satisfy their request with the return of their mailer, marked "NO", in their envelope. All other bits go into the recycling bin!

I hope this satisfies them as much as it satisfies me.

Thanks for this synopsis-lots of reason for some hope-at least in sidelining Trump. I’m still baffled by the slim margin by which Warnock won considering the obvious deficiencies of his opponent. I realize many vote for party not the person-but still. My concern now is Desantis (I live in Fla) and the loyal maga followers who remain dogged in their anger, hatred, and viciousness in defense of Trump and the corrupt GOP. Desantis’ win has emboldened them in their willingness to give voice to their hatred and anger-this state is truly filled some sick and sad folks.

From my own understanding, NY would be the most likely to convict the traitor. They complain that Americans voted him into office. I have tried to explain that while NY knew he was a criminal Americans didn’t know. I didn’t vote for him just bc he was a reprehensible candidate but had no clue beyond that.

Another great piece, Jay. So much uplifting, good news. It's nice to see things going firmly in the right direction. Please keep up the good fight!

No doubt we all wish the long arm of the law and the arc of justice were a bit shorter, but this is damn good news!

Bragg didn’t fire the two prosecutors; they quit.

Ah, yes, you’re right. It feels like he had them pushed out but they left after he undercut them. I’ll adjust.

It’s a Christmas miracle lol! Although I still find it mind boggling how he still has a hold on so many people. I know people use the term “cult” jokingly, but that’s exactly what it is and it’s very scary. Hopefully they can be deprogrammed in the near future.

Expand full comment

Think about religious deprogramming. It would require people to question their faith, as well as the person they think is infallible. It's not impossible (look at Iran), but it is very difficult.

In the past I've read that "deprogramming" is very difficult.

This is great news, and I'm slowly gaining faith that rational, fact-based decision-making and tough, fair law enforcement officials who fight relentlessly for the rule of law may pull the country back from the brink. Jay, I don't know if it is in your bailiwick, but if it is, could you comment on news analysis about failures of New York State Democrats that resulted in losses in the House? It sounds like the NY Democratic Party is nearly as incompetent as the Florida DP.

Just NOT understanding how Donald & Company can get away with all of this and how Donald can still be able to run for president 2024. This fact is even making things 100 times as scary than everything that has been laid out before us. Where are we headed?

Not a good day for the former president. Pobrecito.

Thank you for the summary.

It would be nice if there were actual consequences for the criminal actions of TFG’s organization. Sadly he’s been getting loans from deeply shady/corrupt sources for years.

It apears that the law may finally be closing in on Donald Trump. This brings joy to my heart. And based on the rules in our Constitution and the heinous things that he has done, I do not see how he can possibly run for he highest office in our land. For the sake of America, his rhetoric must be stopped.
