I don't know if it will directly change any minds, but to me the most important effects are (1) it keeps Harris in the driver's seat, (2) Dems continue to be energized and (3) Trump is now flailing and prone to make more mistakes.

Don't forget the Taylor Swift impact, lol. I don't remember the numbers, but I read a piece out of Chicago indicating registrations in the Chicago area shot up an absurd amount *immediately* after she posted her endorsement.

Normally I'd snark and complain about sheep. But now, I love 🐑 sheep!!!

306,422 Swifty cat women have registered to vote, Kamala raised 43M in the hours after the debate. And Act Blue has raised 1 Billion since the RNC Convention when Biden dropped out AFTER JD was nominated. Brilliant timing by Biden.

Expand full comment

I think that number is even higher now

If just one percent of the 300K or so "Swifties" lives in a swing state, registers and votes for Kamala/Walz, that could potentially affect the election.

The youth may end up becoming 2024's pivotal demographic. They certainly seem to have the most to lose on many different levels.

Very true. And there are similar demographics where that’s also true, such as women who care about losing Roe.

Not to mention it isn't only Swiftie cat ladies. There is around 90 million Gen Zers who have grown up with Taylor and are eligible to vote.

If Kamala wins, all the women in the U.S. should get a big, fat present: Free transportation to Cape Canaveral to watch NASA shoot Leon Musk off on a one way ticket to Mars.

I think they should stick that little tick, Leonard Leo, in with Musk and send the both of them out past the Oort cloud. I'd even pay to watch that launch!

I think this particular debate was unprecedented and it definitely let the air out of the balloon full of illusions Trump and his cult have been floating expecting it to replace reality. It swayed people back to reality and it will work in Kamala's favor. It's entirely possible she will win in a landslide and all the talk of it being close was just talk.

Expand full comment

Not only do I think it's possible she'll win in a landslide, I think it's possible Trump will be out of the country on election night.

Or before.

I thought he might leave after the debate. I really did. I don't think he really thinks he won that debate. He looked like he was going to vomit when he was walking off the stage that night (there's a photo of that floating around the interwebs somewhere, I believe).

Lol. Thanks. It should be on a new $1 bill. Executive order.

Expand full comment

He wouldn't have gone into the "spin room" himself afterwards and insisted that he won the debate even though it was "3 against 1". He knows damn well Vice President Harris mopped the floor with him.

Mr. Bastille, from your keyboard to Yahweh's eyes...except for that last part. Even if he loses--even by a landslide--he will stay, because he has prepared his storm troops to challenge the results legally and with civil 'unrest' or even violence. He's been saying for a month or more that 'the Dems will cheat' and he won't accept any results other than a Trump win. He wants to be here to enjoy the inflicting the the chaos and violence on the country--cruelty is the point.

I suppose if he thinks he can win such a battle. And he's delusional enough to think he can.

I worked the Democrat booth at a local fair yesterday in a red but some blue MAGA part of Washington State. I’ve never volunteered before but felt my calling to do so. The almost completely positive feedback I got from people was astounding. I even had a couple of women and one man who are republicans, tell me that they cannot vote for tRump again. They also spoke about how impressed they were with Kamala’s debate performance. Of course the people who are democrats that stopped by were gleeful and giddy about the debate. I also saw people with Harris/Walz shirts. More so than even I expected. Of course the Republicans had their own booth in another part of the fair, so a democrat who stopped at our booth said she was going to go troll the Republican booth. She came back with a picture of their booth with a cutout of Donald orange turd and get this, RFK Jr! She asked the booth worker who the other guy was next to tRump because it wasn’t JD, and he looked at it and said, “I don’t know who that is!” 😂. But they were also handing out a flyer that RFK Jr. had supposedly wrote, and on it was JFK’s famous quote: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” It was disgusting. We only had two people say derogatory things to us, and one old white guy wave his MAGAT hat at us and smile. The other person working the booth said to him “good luck with that”.

But the most interesting conversation was with a woman who said she used to be a democrat but could not be one after covid, as she was a nurse who refused to get vaccinated and so she was fired. She also said when she was a nurse she was forced to perform 9 month abortions. I told her that was murder. At this point in the conversation I wasn’t sure about her mental acuity. Then when asked about his statement of immigrants eating cats and dogs, she said, “Oh I know that is a true statement because I saw a video on YouTube!” I told her that anyone can fake a video and post it. What was the source of the video, she had no answer. The take away is that those who have partaken in the kool-aid, won’t be swayed, but those who have some critical thinking skills left, are finally turning against him. Including my Republican for life, twice voted for tRump, 80 year old parents who I have talked to for 9 years about tRump and the danger he poses to America. They will be voting a Democratic ticket for the first time in their lives! There is HOPE people. 💙💙💙

He showed the country and the world how stupid he is when he said that immigrants were eating pets. He said that he saw it on TV? This fool is actually the GOP’s nominee for president? Are you f’ing kidding me?

And trump did the only thing he could while being fact checked. Push back even harder.

And not only that, he's also tied with the other candidate in the room.

Thank you Jay for being here for us. Busy as we all know you must be. My friends and I were very concerned that this debate was going to be like all the recent debates. Just free airtime for the Satsuma.

No fact checking, Gish galloping orange Julius, with the MSM hammering our VP on policy while they let the Mango Mussolini say anything he wanted. That said, my friends and I were gobsmacked regarding a fact check! OMG. WHAT! We all set our drinks down at that point and were mesmerized...waiting for fact check number 2. Some fun. My group didn't/doesn't think that this debate will change anything really, but we as DEMS really, really got some joy out of it and everyone left out house ready to kick some orange A*%s. So, if that's all this debate does is make us all feel happy and motivated it was a double win, A great candidate and a great motivator. And all that is just my 2 cents.

I don't think the debate will sway many voters. Many still say they want to know more about Harris but can't say what they WANT to know about her.

Expand full comment

If they have two brain cells to rub together they could go to her website and READ her policies themselves instead of waiting for her to magically show up on their phone screens to explain it all to them 🙄

Many have been asking, "So. Will the debate move the needle?"

Statistics show about 67 million viewers watched all or part of the debate.

Seeking needle movement shortly after the debate is premature. I'll be looking for trends favoring Harris-Walz as social media kicks in and viewers share what they've observed from the debate.

Tell two friends.
